NEWS: "Apple discontinues space grey accessories"

Responses from news on an Apple forum:

"WHAT?? This is a first world problem! How dare Apple. What will my life be like without space grey accessories??? OH THE AGONY!" 🙄

NEWS: "Dell discontinues selling ALL accessories"

Responses from news on a Dell forum:

"Eh it's fine. I've got plenty of surplus accessories lying around from old PC's. Not worried about it. Plus there are plenty of 3rd party accessories on the internet as well. Dell makes great products, I trust their decision was of good reason and they know what's best." 😂

This incessant need to be so dramatic when it comes to Apple is very silly, especially when we're talking about some accessories in a specific color. When it's any other company nobody cares even if the decision affects all customers in the worst way.

One could be inclined to respond to that with an opinion on what that says about Apple’s customer base...

The trackpad i might pick up. But the keyboard isn’t as good as the MX keys, (and that one has backlight) and is only $99 so just grab that.

The iMacPro isn't the only thing these match. They also work for anyone using a spacegray MBP at their desktop with an external keyboard/trackpad/mouse. As others have pointed out, there are probably other reasons Apple's discontinuing these besides the color.

Sad to see the best looking accessories go. Maybe one day they’ll bring them back.

They’ll likely have a similar option available with the new rounder corners as seen on the keyboard and trackpad bundled with the M1 iMac.

I do hope they offer silver and black though, Space Gray hasn’t been consistent over the years and it’s not exactly my favorite. Silver is nice and bright and black keys don’t yellow over time. Wanted that combo well over a decade ago, tbh.

Translation: “Strong opinions that I disagree with are bad!”
Thanks for that fascinating lecture.

I ordered my space gray Apple Magic keyboard on March 27th, 2018 - the first day they were available and the date of the Education event at Lane Tech high school in Chicago. RIP to the best keyboard Apple ever made.

That was Apple’s bean counter counting beans. My opinion might be unpopular, but Apple is really just going after high margins, that’s it.

Airport lineup needed to be updated and made competitive, not discontinued. Similarly, these keyboards could be updated, didn’t need to be discontinued.

What needs to be discontinued is that mouse with its juice-mouth at the bottom instead of at its sides. But that ain’t happening just yet. 😅
The iMac Pro was discontinued. They were only making these along with that Mac, and sold some separately because they probably produced more than they needed in case people needed to replace a damaged keyboard or mouse.

The new iMacs include a keyboard with Touch ID. It doesn’t take Nostradamus to figure out that Apple’s future keyboards will also include this. The existing keyboards were just clearing out old inventory.

Apple seems to follow (or slightly modify) consumer trends. Pantone believe there are two colors of the year: Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Gray. Pantone (and probably) Apple believes that a "K" shape recovery will happen, where a certain subsection of the economy grow slowly with high unemployment, and another subsection will grow fast.

(Source: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.co...-12-26/the-pantone-color-of-the-year-for-2021)

My guess is Apple going to market their products for the "upper" part of the K shape, and will keep as much gray hidden as possible.

For what it's worth, I used to like black and white, but I'm coming around to pastels and colors. I'm thinking about getting another case for my MacBook Air that's not black.

I agree the keyboard is not as good for not being backlit. The Logitech Craft keyboard is also a great backlit option with a similar profile to the apple one in space gray.

I just love posts like this calling a multi-trillion dollar corporation stupid. Apple knows how to run their business a whole lot better than people posting on forums.
They are stupid. many users spent their money buying iPhone, iPad, Watch, MacBook and a series of accessories in space gray. it was the hottest color to get. Now out of the blue they decided to discontinue it? that’s stupid, as they are pissing the very people who buy their products.
Is Apple going to offer a trade up program to switch to their new colors? Most likely not. So they are stupid!

so there will be a whole set of fancy colored keyboards and mice but no space grey option? I don't get it...
Well, they're are a lot of possible cliché responses to pick from. From Steve Balmer laughing at iPhone because they've got a $99 Motorola Q instead. To out of touch Apple introducing the 2013 Mac Pro.

Or you could kind of go for the conspiracy / Illuminati confirmed! angle. Where the agenda is to make everything ugly so you'll have to pay extra $$ to not get stuck with fruity colors, obnoxious chins, and eye burning white bezels.

There's a lot to work with. Even the more conservative, it's just a sensor freakout / loss aversion thing.

I agree, it's a really nice looking piece of hardware. I always wished they would release the smaller Magic Keyboard in Space Gray but for whatever reason they never did. I'd have bought it in a flash because the white keys get pretty dingy over time.
And the extended keyboard is wayyy too big. I own it but don’t use it. The trackpad winds up being so far to the right it makes it a less efficient setup. So I wind up using my space grey trackpad and keyboard alongside my old, shorter, white keyboard with the AA batteries inside!

Apple makes beautiful-looking accessories, but I have to say I love my Logitech mouse and keyboard. They may not exactly match my MBP's colorway, but they provide great functionality. The keyboard is an (unfortunately discontinued) K811. Its keys have nice travel, and require very little effort to depress (allowing fast typing with minimal fatigue). It is *very* comfortable to type on.

Any my G502 gaming mouse, which I've programmed for office work, provides far greater functionality than anything Apple has ever offered. I feel like I'm missing a hand when I try to use a Mac without it.

The "RESIZE & MV RIGHT" and "RESIZE & MV LEFT" buttons take whatever window you're in and make it fill the right half and left half of the screen respectively. It's great when you need to view two docs side by side. The SCREENSHOT button executes CMD-CTRL-SHIFT-4, which brings up a cursor for doing screen grabs that are automatically copied to the clipboard for pasting elsewhere. FORWARD and BACK, which are activated by tilting the scroll wheel right and left, allow me to easily toggle back and forth through web pages. If I need to close a bunch of windows I just click anywhere in the window and use the CLOSE WINDOW button (which activates CMD-W)--much easier than having to hit the little red button, or switch back and forth between clicking on the window and activating the keyboard shorcut.

I'm typing on one, and it's a replacement for the original I trashed that came with Mac Pro. Can you not just buy these like the iMac Pro accessories being discontinued? I did, you just call customer support and tell them you want to buy a replacement keyboard in silver with black keys. Can this only be ordered by people who purchased a 2019 Mac Pro? IDK, I thought you could just special order them. I don't honestly remember whether or not I gave them a serial # or just said I had a Mac Pro and needed a replacement keyboard. Replacement shipped from Austin, TX, same as MP did.

It cost the same as regular keyboard(s), they did not add a $999 surcharge to base price for Mac Pro color scheme :)

That's because you didn't get it with the wheels :D.

I love my space gray keyboard and trackpad. I hope they'll be back but with newer features like Touch ID and with the same form factors of the new iMac accessories.
I really hope this is the sign they are finally replacing the Magic Mouse 2, potentially to be announced at WWDC.

I'm glad I got mine a while ago. The mouse is really *****, though, the ergonomics is so weird and it makes my hand hurt.
