I'd totally laugh if the iSquare/iBrick isn't released until 6/2011 and the 3GS2 is next month.
:p

The whole reason I did not upgrade to the iPhone 3GS is

1. Looked the same as my 3G and no one would know the difference unless they asked.

2. I could wait until the release in 2010 when we would get alot of updated features and new design.

If apple thinks that they can keep the same old design of this phone for the 3rd year in a row, it will bring them alot of bad press.

screen

Ok…so I have a question. Ever since the new iphone was leaked, I haven’t noticed anyone complaining about the fact that the screen is SMALLER than that of the 3gs. Why is that? Sure, it has higher resolution, but do people really care about super high resolution on a 3 inch screen? I’d be happy with a much bigger screen with good resolution. I mean, look at the motorola droid. Its display looks pretty friggin sweet. I dunno…it just seems like an odd step backward to me. Thoughts?

Another Thought

I think we will see the leaked design for this years iphone for 2 reasons.

1. The story of the accessory Manufactures ramping up the production of the iPhone 4G cases. I dont think they would spend money on something that will not come out.

https://www.macrumors.com/2010/05/19/accessory-manufacturers-ramp-up-4th-generation-iphone-cases/

2. Why would iPhone repair shops start getting Prototype replacement parts for a design that is not coming out?

They have shown the black front and white front.

I am starting to think that maybe apple gave this story to digitimes to give people doubt about getting the new design. Then People will not be sure what is coming at WWDC 2010.

SJ will then come on stage and relieve everyone's fears and doubts about getting a 3rd year of the same design. everyone will oohh and aahhh ( Me included) and rush out to get the phone.:D

Yeah you keep telling yourself that.. There's a reason why iPhone market share has been steadily dropping during all of 2010. While Droid Incredible has been sold out during since day one. People are tired of stale 2007 design with tiny screen, 320x480 resolution and sad 3MB camera.

Apple needs to wake up and smell the coffee - they can't just milk the same product for years and expect to be competitive. If they pull more of the same stuff with 2010 iPhone - they officially lost the smartphone war.

The Incredible is sold out because it has supply issues(which is why Apple isnt using AMOLED). The Incredible won't sell a tenth of what the next iPhone will.

do or die

i am pretty hard core old school guy.
either impress me or die.
i will not buy the stupid ipad until it becomes actually useful
i didn't buy 3GS cause just an improvement will not cut it.
i work damn hard for my money and i want companies to work as hard, SJ accused some of being lazy, well sometimes apple is pretty lazy to.
bottom line :
my iphone 3G is already sold i am using a fall back Blackberry for now,
if comes july and there is no IPhone or there is a lame IPhone i am going droid.

New model redesign to go to AT&T;

Old form to goto Verizon / Sprint w/new guts.

?

Love it. I keep joking with my friends that the new iPhone will be a 3GS "HD" or something (based on the rate that the iPhone has been evolving), well, I bet that's exactly what will be presented in a couple of weeks :D

I'm sure a few people have griped about it. People complain about everything and nothing around here.

That said, it appears to be a non-issue for most people. From the photos, it doesn't look like the leaked prototype's screen was significantly smaller. Perhaps it's not a big deal.

What if Apple HAS production issues with the new IPhone design and this piece of information is a controlled leak to get everyone used to see the old design on June 7th ?

hahaha i was wondering how long it would take before someone came out with that.

I really don't understand this logic.

Why would Apple want to treat Verizon/Sprint's customers like second-class citizens? That's not very nice. Plus, Verizon and Sprint subscribers' dollars are just as green as those of AT&T's customers.

Following your "logic", maybe the rest of the world should be getting hand-me-downs as well.

This makes zero sense and is rudely elitist honestly.

screws on the bottom

I hope the screws are there..Just because I took my 3GS apart last night to see if it was easy and it sure was. I'm sure the phone will come apart another way if there are no screws but that was too easy.

surely the internals should be more important, or is that just me?

I agree that apple can't just have another software upgrade and call it the next generation which was pretty much what the 3gs was, with few hardware tweaks. But if they had all the new hardware that's been floating around these sites like ffacing camera, a4 processor, better camera, then that'll do me!

If you actually think this then why has iPhone dominated all user tests in comparison to every contender and come out the winner? yes i like the androids interface, especially the sense interface but it still sucks in comparison with iPhone os, hense the reason that iPhones seem to win every test they get themselves into. These androids may be lovely peices of tech but they fail to be as usable as the iPhone. I mean, the iPhone we all saw in 2007 would beat most phones on the market today!

I hardly give a damn if they update the case. I want new features. Better camera with a flash. Better wifi. Faster processor - preferably an A4 variant. You know, the really important stuff.

The current case looks and works fine for me. Update the internals and I am there!
Agreed, the old case would still work for me, i just want the new features! gimme them in most apple-produced outer shell and i'm sure i'll still adore it, curvy or not. :)

How is it that people STILL think that Apple leaked these on purpose? For one, Apple doesn't even conduct focus groups on new products- isn't it clear by now that Apple alone dictates what it's products look like and do, not marketing or focus groups? I believe it's been documented pretty well in exlusive interviews and reports, not just rumors. Second, if Apple purposely leaked the Gizmodo iPhone, then they wouldn't have prompted a criminal investigation, as that would get them in some hot water legally.

Even autmobile manufacturers don't use the public feedback on sightings of it's development cars. If a car company has cars driving around in nearly finished bodywork, they aren't just testing how it looks, they're well into starting production and are fine tuning the underpinnings. Car shows are where car companies guage public opinion on new designs, with concept cars, not on late-development mules.

Seeing as though you're "totally convinced" that this is a marketing survey of some sort, I don't think that I'm going to convince you otherwise. There isn't some grand scheme here to test public opinion.

There are three types of realities on corporate America.

1) How companies do business
2) How they say they do business and,
3) How business gets done without the boss really knowing

I'm still convinced that this was an intentional leak by someone at Apple. They have benefited from it, the PR was good, and they will have the most popular iPhone form factor out next month. The ends justified the means.

Go back to you cubical and keep agreeing with your boss.

the screen on the leaked iPhone wasn't 3 inches, it was pretty much exactly the same size as the 3gs. a fraction smaller but hardly noticable, even when they were compared next to each other.

Peace :apple:

A recent MacRumors article included Steve Jobs' email response stating we "won't be dissapointed". If that really WAS Steve, then I wouldn't believe this.

i know it wasnt exactly 3 inches. im sorry i dont know the exact size. but that wasnt the point. my point was that the new screen is smaller than the old one. even if its just by a fraction. why would you make it smaller? it just doesnt make sense. i cant remember any phone upgrade that included a smaller screen even if its hardly noticeable. just sayin...

At first I thought it was a PR stunt too. But when Apple called the cops that is where my black helicopter theory died. If this was a pre-planned stunt, involving the cops was not only illegal it was a breach of the public trust -- something that ultimately, would sidetrack Apple from it's central mission of making great products. The ends do not justify the means if the true end is Apple's downfall.

As for the 3GS shell -- it's been said, companies make several prototypes. Most likely the 3GS was a backup. But even if Apple continues the same form factor what kinda limped fashionistas do we have here? Isn't this a geek site where specs take top billing. What matters are the guts -- higher res video, crisper screen, longer battery life @ same or less weight. I could give a rats a* about the shell. Most of us just put a case around it anyway. What's the big deal.

Look at the latest crop of smartphones - HTC Evo, Droid Incredible, Motorola Shadow.. your iPhone looks like a child's toy next to them. Again, fine for 2007.. doesn't cut it for 2H 2010.

This is why there are multiple iPhone designs. Apple wants to release an iPhone that's cheapest-to-produce & most similar to its current iPhone. This will produce the largest profit margin and will also give them more wiggle room in the future for potential upgrades. They wouldn't want to put out the best phone imaginable. This would mean lower profits and future upgrades will be less enticing to consumers (b/c how much can you really improve perfection?). And besides, why upgrade the iPhone too drastically when sales are already brisk and people are going to buy it anyway due to its Apple logo.

However, they don't want to be caught with their pants down. Therefore, they make multiple iPhones and once the competition is sized up (HTC Evo, Droid Incredible, Motorola Shadow, etc...), they pick the most competitive phone that is cheapest to produce. It's actually quite a balancing act. That said, if the above phones were not being produced this year, we probably would be seeing the 3GS2 phone this June.

This is no surprise at all. From reading this report, I am now totally convinced that these "leaks" were in fact a covert marketing survey project for Apple to notice overall reaction to the new form factor.

A call will or was just made on which form factor to mass produce. Anyone taking bets? I'm sure all the hardware and software features are the same. The board design between the two are almost identical so it is just old boring three dimensional work instead of really challenging four to seven dimensional work that is electronics and software.

Reminds of a summer where the early "mako shark" Corvette prototype was driving around the country in the early 1970s. There were "new Corvette sightings" making automotive magazines for a while before Chevy rolled out that generation Corvette. I am sure Chevy learned a lot from those press pieces before deciding on the final design.

Finally another person with common sense

I can't believe there are fools out there that still think this was an intentional leak. The Sheriff and REACT don't break into people's houses over a controlled leak.

Interesting article. Kinda kills the Verizon rumors. 3 prototypes? well, I think we've seen 2 of em. (the one with screws on the bottom and the one without)
Which one will we see at WWDC?????

Exactly how does it kill the Verizon rumor?

Yeah you keep telling yourself that.. There's a reason why iPhone market share has been steadily dropping during all of 2010.

Go look at the numbers.
1) So far only 1 Qtr of 2010 has passed
2) Apple lost .1% market share...negligible

Plus, if Apple sold CDMA phones all over the place, GeoHot could unlock them some how and people would just use it with Verizon.

Verizon doesn't allow the activation of ESNs not already in their database (phones they sell/distribute).

Dear god... Why is it THAT hard to mass produce a Verizon-compatible iPhone? I really hate my old Blackberry Storm, and I don't want to leave Verizon due to their fantastic coverage in my area. I don't really care about voice and data simultaneously; I just want to have the best phone on the best network for me.
