Early 2013 MBPR 15 distortion problems

I have been lately having problems with the video distortion and the system seems to be reboot automatically.I went in to the store but strangely the system has passed but i am pretty sure that the problem exists. The Genius guy has asked to drop in for a 48 hr extensive test.I am not sure if i have to payout of pockets for any repairs? I however see some GPU in the logs.Does any one have an idea about this.

You shouldn't have to pay out of pocket. If they were going to charge you, as would be the case with any third party retailer (note they didn't make anything when you purchased that notebook) you would sign off on a repair estimate. It's likely that they just want to verify the problem. Note that extensive testing just means set it up in the back where no one will disturb it and allow tests to run until they either complete or fail out.

Thank you. Do you know what the error on the logs means. Is this related to GPU or logic board ?

GPU is part of the logic board. This appears to be a 2012 or early 2013 15". It's a core dump, and I'm not an expert when it comes to reading them. There aren't any obvious points jumping out at me, but if it was trying to switch to discrete graphics right when this happened, that would be a good indication of a gpu problem, which is also a logic board problem as the two are soldered. Apple has a repair program for these if that is the case. If they didn't have one, I would have suggested depot repair ($330 flat to fix any and all problems).

Does anyone have experience with a 2011 MBP that didn't power-up (completely dead) getting coverage under this repair program?

Not this program but this same problem.

My 2011 MBP was dead by the time I took it into the Applestore in Reston, VA 2013. It was experiencing pretty bad screen glitches and graphics corruptions in the few days leading up to my visit but wouldn't even power on by the time I got in there. Was covered under Applecare and the technician was aware this was a problem. They even stocked replacement logic boards in house! Fixed in half a day.

I have a Mid-2012 rMBP. Before this week I only had occasional kernel panics, but on Monday I got the rainbow vertical lines, so I took it in to the Jordan Creek store that day. They replaced the logic board for free and I got it back today. I bought this Mac used, didn't have AppleCare, and a few months ago I replaced the MagSafe DC-in, obviously voiding the warranty... so I'm a bit amazed that I didn't have to pay for anything.

- Whether or not you buy it used, don't have AppleCare or have voided your warranty doesn't impact the coverage of this (quite nice) programme. Proof of purchase isn't even required. It simply covers all affected computers "until February 27, 2016 or three years from its original date of sale, whichever provides longer coverage" (1). And it also provides financial reimbursement for any users who have previously paid out of pocket to have the issue fixed.

When I had my 2011 MBP fixed last week, it was more than 4 years old and had had its long expired warranty voided several times over. ;)

In my experience, it also provides you with a new One Year Limited Warranty for the replaced part(s), though that may be due to local legislation (?).

Granted, the problem really shouldn't have been there in the first place, and Apple were a bit slow to get the programme started, but now that it's here, it's really pretty good.

So you love Apple because they sold you a crap product and took forever to warranty it?
I have had other companies send me a new product no questions asked.

Once again Apple demonstrates why they are the leader of the pack when it comes to taking care of their customers. This is why we love Apple. This is what the Sony's of the world just don't get selling high-end devices but providing lousy support and aftercare.

Anyone gotten a email from Apple saying due to the repair job on your MacBook Pro you're entitled to a refund and the only way to get that is via check?

The rep I talked to said he'd need a routing number for my bank account instead of just refunding the credit card I used.

Is this real or a con job?

I got an email today, but I'm not clicking on any links or calling their number. I've got an appointment this weekend at the Apple store near my house, and I'll just discuss with them there. I'm definitely not giving anyone my bank information over the phone

As far as I know, Apple always refunds directly to a bank account. They don't refund to credit cards, and they don't send checks.

If in doubt, contact them via a channel you know belongs to them (eg AppleCare's phone number for your area, taken from Apple's website - not the email!), and ask.

Had the logic board in my 2011 15" replaced at an Authorized Service Provider under this program last week. Started doing this when switching GPUs the day I got it back:

Looks like I got another defective part?

Looks like it :(

Interestingly, that task and menu bars don't seem affected?

Yeah I'm not sure what's up with that.

I've partitioned the drive and installed a fresh copy of Yosemite and it continues to do it so I think that rules out a software issue.

Has anyone had any success getting a repair for a Retina Early 2013?

I confirmed mine was eligible over the phone before going to the Apple Store, however when I got there they tested it and it "Passed" the test. Now they have it for further testing.

I've been experiencing random freezing which can only be solved by a hard reset.

Have 2012 MBP 15 retina, was having random video distortion issues.
Took into store, ran VST and passed. Kept it for a few days and also passed their ASD.

I had to ask them to send it to Apple for more testing, since they thought it was a software issue since they could not reproduce any problem. (they wanted me to do a clean install and manually reinstall each app one by one)

Got it back from Apple today and they replaced:
Logic board
LCD Display
Board I/O
Cable I/O, Flex
Cable I/O, Right.

I wasn't aware of the repair extension program and I am surprised that they never told me about the known issues since I was having the same symptoms.

Anyway, hope this solves the problem for me.

When I originally spoke to Apple about this (like, on February 19th, the very day that they announced that they would reimburse people for repairs) the guy I talked to said that they could only credit the card I used to pay with (which was fine with me), or do a wire transfer (requiring my account number and routing number, which I wasn't okay in giving him—even less-so because my bank charges $25 to receive a wire transfer).

Anyway, for some reason, the guy said that my card had changed since I paid for the repair (it hadn't), and so they could only do the wire transfer. I said that I couldn't believe that a company as large as Apple was incapable of simply sending me a check. He talked to his manager or whatever, and then I talked to his manager and they told me that they weren't set up to do checks and all they could do was the wire transfer.
(I got the feeling that this wasn't "Apple" so much as some warehouse full of contractors that were hired by Apple to help take care of the call volume associated with this mess.)

After talking to my bank to confirm that my card hadn't changed, and after they gave me the info about the $25 charge for wire transfers, I called my "Apple" guy back, got his voicemail, and let him know that my debit card was the exact same one, and there must be a mistake on their end. I read them my Repair ID# off of my printed out Product Repair Summary.

Anyway, later that day I got a call from my assigned rep, who told me that they had gotten my Repair ID# wrong, and that there had just-in-the-last-day-or-so been a change on their end (probably because no one was comfortable with wire transfers, let alone footing the bill for them) and that they could now send out a check.

Anyway, I game him my address, he double-checked it, and then he told me that it would take up to a month to receive. It's been a couple of weeks so far—still waiting, but keeping my eye out...

But yeah, in regard to "con job", the first time when I talked to them and they were all about wire transfers and routing numbers, it did seem very sketchy.

Got back from the Apple Store a few hours ago. They replaced my mid-2012 rMBP with the 2.3 ghz/16gb/256gb SSD with the current one, and since they don't make the "lower" end model with discrete graphics, I got the higher end model with the 16gb RAM/512gb SSD/2gb NVIDIA card.

Took a few weeks of sending in my old defective one and getting it "repaired," but I'm finally happy. Good job Apple.

Now I have to go buy AppleCare for this one again lol

Wow. this is the sort of "repair" that i want with my mid 2012 rMBP! Have applecare still, had display replaced over a year ago, new display has several bad pixels now, SD card reader is intermittent (can reproduce), and the ubiquitous video card issue which causes intermittent freezing/restarts. would be ecstatic if i got an ivy to haswell replacement... currently have the upgraded 2.7 ghz cpu, 16gb ram 256 ssd

When I asked for a replacement the Genius Bar at the Apple Store told me I had to have a call with AppleCare (my machine is covered by AppleCare). They wouldn't replace it at the store.

Waiting to see what they decide. I have no confidence that another replacement logic board would fix the problem for any reasonable length of time considering the replacement logic boards still have the faulty parts that fail prematurely.

Depends on your local laws. In some regions (eg here in Australia), a major hardware failure of a device of that cost is grounds for a replacement (at the consumer's option) well after the first year of warranty.
I'm in Australia. That's what I'm going to argue if Apple doesn't want to replace my unit. It is a major hardware failure.
No one here seems to know for certain, but all signs point to Apple using more boards with the same defective design, as they usually do with their repair programs.
I can confirm it from my experience. The replacement logic board they put in my rMBP failed the GPU test.

- When I had my MBP (info below) fixed a few weeks ago, the Authorized Service Provider assured me the replacement logic board was from a new batch that had had the GPU issue fixed.

Early 2011

I had early 2011 macbook on which I spilled coffee badly on the keyboard. I was lucky only 2-3 keys had gone. After a long time I had the gpu failure and I couldn't use my macbook for almost 2 years. After this replacement program, I took my Macbook to the Apple Store at Turkey. VST test immediately failed and they replaced my mainboard. My battery was also dead which is obvious if you don't us it for 2 years. They also offered me to change top case an battery for an extra charge. I accepted the charge for top case but I asked a free replacement for the battery because it is related to mainboard failure. However, they didn't accepted. I also tried to get help from Apple Care, I talked to senior advisor but he insisted that I have to pay for the battery.
I'm reading lots of people having free replacement for their top case, screen, battery etc. even they are not covered in the replacement program. Are there anything I can do to get free battery replacement from Apple ? It is very obvious that battery failure is the result of the mainboard failure.

I think I'm the most unlucky person in the forum. I had a GPU failure on my Early 2011 and bought Early 2013. The result of my repair process is just above this message.

On my new Macbook, I'm also having random freezes (4-5 times in the last 6 month). It is also overheating and after it reaches to 65-68 (numbers from smcfancontrol) degree the network drops and it works again after I turn off and turn on the network. It is happening frequently 2-3 times a week. I also had problems with external displays bot on thunderbolt and hdmi port.

I took it to the Apple Store together with my Early 2011 but it passed VST test. I'm waiting to get my Early 2011 back and I'll leave Early 2013 to them for detailed testing.

After all these, I'll never buy any other Apple products. Bad hardware, bad customer support.
(I'm not even talking about power adapter failures, low quality (original) iphone charging cables, Iphone power button failures etc.)

Refund due or not?

Hi all,

Just had an email from Apple...

Dear MacBook Pro owner,

Apple recently announced the MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues, which covers, free of charge, the repair of eligible MacBook Pro systems.

Our records show that you paid for a service request related to video issues on your MacBook Pro.

Because your MacBook Pro is one of the affected products for this program, we will provide you with a refund in the amount you paid for the service request.

Please use this link to start your refund request and confirm your contact information.

Sincerely,
Apple

Now, my Wife is away travelling with the laptop, so I can't get the serial number at the mo, but I found the receipt from the Apple store...
