I already see them everyday in my commute to the city (big metro). These are becoming the new white headphones that iPods popularized.

I live in NYC and I've seen only two commuters with airpods on in the subway so far this year. I personally listen to SONY MDR1000X pair when I'm commuting.

Whenever I see someone wearing these I just think they look dorky. Just don’t really get the allure of them — just EarPods without wires and with the same mediocre sound. I picked up a pair of Studio 2s for a little more than the price of AirPods but they don’t look stupid and they sound amazing.

I didn't realise the AirPods had the same audio quality as the EarPods.

I thought they were better quality sound?

Must admit I'm surprised that their new $159 earphones have the same audio as the bundled earphones.

Are you sure about that though?

I picked up a pair last week but had to return them as the right one stopped working within a couple of days. I can't say that I'm sorry to have to do so - yes, the W1 pairing is really convenient and the charging case is great, but the sound quality was really disappointing.

Based on my experience, this is pretty much true. They perhaps have slightly better stereo imaging than the Lightning EarPods bundled with my iPhone 7, but that's about it.

It’s funny. I’m willing to drop more than $1000 on an iPhone X but not another $159 in addition to that on AirPods. I’d love to have a pair but I just know that I’m going to lose one or both of them. I might as well take $160 and light it on fire.

How well does “Find My AirPods” work? I have enough trouble keeping track of my Apple TV remote, iPhone and Apple Watch. I wish Apple would use Bluetooth to allow users to have the iPhone emit an audio tone if you’re looking for one of those other devices and are near it but can’t see it.
There's always the BeatsX, much harder to loose, though you can still misplace them in your home. I very occasionally use the app FindBlue to search for missing Bluetooth devices. It doesn't give you any directional information, only signal strength, so it can take a little bit of time to create a virtual signal strength map (in your head) by walking around and repeatedly polling the app.

Easy to believe. This is the best Apple product since the original iPhone. This does beg the question. They're able to ramp up production for the iPhone X and meet demand within one month, but still can't keep up with AirPods a year later? Either the AirPods are seeing demand of proportions unseen any any product of any kind in history ... or the iPhone X is just a meh product.
Airpods demand spiking massively before Christmas is likelier than iPhone X demand spiking before Christmas. Airpods are just a more likely gift than the iPhone X based on a much lower price and its accessory character. What was surprising that shipping times for the Airpods stayed elevated for (almost) a full year. The last MacRumors articles about Airpods availability (before this one) were an improvement to 3 to 5 days at the end of September and 1 to 3 days two months later. Not having next day shipping almost a full twelve months after launch is the main story, going from there to a Christmas-induced shortage doesn't take much. If they could barely make enough at the beginning of December, it's not really not a surprise that closing in on Christmas shipping times slipped again.

Yes, they are pretty much the the same as the wired headset, just minus the wires. The stems are just a bit thicker. Why would they look silly then? I don't get people thinking they look silly simply because they are wireless.

Because meny people don't like changes and any changes presented to them look weird. And they are slow like cow to adopt to these changes.

Does anyone else find the terminology in this article a bit odd?

Shipping times have slipped to 2 weeks, that’s all.

Shipping times for airpods have been poor all year, but this is the first time I think they’ve referred to to them as “sold out”

I read the headline as "Fuggitaboutit for Christmas." Maybe it's a bit click-baity to declare "sold out," but I think a reasonable person can infer the meaning.

I have a pair and find them silly looking. I don't care what strangers think that much because they are great, but if I'm going to be honest, yes, they are somewhere between dorky and douchey looking.

They might be similar looking to EarPods but they take on a different visual because it is thicker and also the eye stops at the end of earbud rather than travel past it when there is a cable. It's not dissimilar to neck tie widths. Of course a tie looks like a tie. But just an inch width makes a huge difference between being wide and dated or small too hip and unprofessional, and perfect.

Maybe the regular EarPods have gotten better over the years then. I haven't used any for years, and the AirPods definitely seem quite a bit better than those. I think a big part of the in ear ones is dependent on how snugly they fit in the ear, but granted - I would still prefer my B&Ws if I'm just out walking without any hat.

Posts like yours is why removal of the downvote button was a mistake. Also I realize that, in the age of Trump, lying is now fashionable, so these kinds of comments are to be expected.

Umm... "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan."

Why did you have to make this political? No need for that. Plenty of ways to debunk OP's post without going there. This is why political talk is limited to it's own forum here.

Apologies for that. Just that it seems more common in this forum to outright lie now, with zero consequences or accountability. Hence why we need a downvote button again.

$160 bucks to listen to your $800 device because your device's ability to use a $10 device, which you have several of, was courageously omitted to sell you the $160 device for more padding of the Apple offshore accounts; but, on the positive side, they are forcing their cult members to get more exercise since they now have to bend over to retrieve their expensive do-dad every time one falls out.

If you think $160 is a lot of money then your mind will be blown to know Shure's almost-reference wired earbuds sell for, not $10, but over $500. Seems you just like to complain about things you have no real-life experience with. Why not put your mind to a more productive use?

The Airbuds are great tech though. But if you want to use a wired earbud with your iPhone the included adapter works fine and is not intrusive or awkward at all. When I did use a wired bud I just kept the adapter connected to the buds so I never missed not having a minijack port. But Airbuds sound pretty good and so convenient. Mine have never fallen out -- even on long runs when they get wet and sweaty.

Yeah, more affordable than an iPhone, but these are still frickin $159 earbuds. I see that they are selling well at that pricepoint, but I don't think I'd ever spend more than $80 on earbuds. I'd blow $300 on a nice set of studio headphones, but again these are earbuds.

That happens from time to time with my airpods. It usually clears up by putting them back in the case and re-opening the case next to the phone. Frustrating when you leave the case somewhere, but easy to work around once you realize that it has a possibility of occurring. Of course, micro-electronics can break and typically have a youthful mortality rate. So maybe it was hardware related. -shrug-

Last time I looked (which isn't recently) they were cheaper than comparable offerings. So like it or lump it, there is price point set by the the market for wireless earbuds. For me, they have been transformative in how I use my phone. Clean, light, ultra portable, lengthy charge, clear mic and extraneous noise compensation for talking. It's your money, but lumping these into "just another earbud" cubby hole is not looking at the total package that you get for $169. (As an ATT customer, I got two overnight with a $50 cash rebate from Verizon). YMMV.

Everyone who loves them says they sound like the apple wired earpods. I think the earpods sound like crap, is it not fair to believe I'll think the airpods sound like crap?

The sound is clearly better than EarPods. Anyone who said they sound the same just doesn’t know what they talking about, or comparing them in a very loud environment.

Soooo, about that supply chain genius everyone keeps talking about?

I was going to buy a Prius until I realized that I could get more legroom for less money if I bought a Camry. Then I was told that anyone who liked a Prius had never driven a Tesla. Except a bike was even more efficient.

I better just stay home.
