Oof I can't believe they've decided to tax customers just because of tech bros wasting money on useless clankers.
Do they really think a new computer is such a necessity?

On the other hand maybe that's for good: bigger prices will hold people from upgrading so often, which means developers will finally invest their time and resources into optimizing software. Less upgrades=less carbon footprint, can't see the reason why Apple shouldn't be happy! After all they are the ones making everything from recycled soda cans. /s

I still can't believe how we got from "perfectly fine" 4 and 8 gb to minimum of 16 for just browsing. Maybe Apple needs to finally stop their computations! My 17 Pro literally overheats from taking boring photos, way too much AI. Back in the days best cameras had a processor from calculator and 40 megabytes of RAM, all of which was used for taking photos, and that was enough. Now we have 12 GB monstrocities that cannot take a shot without tonemapping into oblivion

Not really. Apple's base has changed a lot since the iPhone and Intel transition, the "Crazy Ones" were barely 2-3% of the total PC market in those days. Sure, they might see a drop, but I don't see a lot of their sales falling off with the general consumer. Especially when other PC and smart devices manufacturers are increasing their prices as well. This isn't affecting Apple, everyone is getting hit with these component cost increases. Lenovo, Dell and other PC manufacturers have started passing these cost increases already this year. Samsung already did a price increase on their devices, they'll probably do another round at some point.

I'm not saying Apple is going to lose sales to competitors, but someone that upgrades every three years might start waiting five years, etc...it just changes the math for folks that tend to upgrade before they really need to. And yeah, this is an industry problem. I'm sure gamers are hanging onto their rigs a lot longer these days too.

Yeah these are all pretty steep. Hopefully when the time comes, they bring them back down and try to not normalize the current pricing as the new baseline. That's always my fear.
yeah that's my fear too for them thinking we will just forget about it....I dont want this kind of pricing to become norm because for us canadians..when i say this i do mean it honestly...its unaffordable...i can already feel empty apple stores incoming lol

Yes, if you think these prices are bad, look at gaming laptops. Mine has literally doubled in price if I were to buy it today. Apple, honestly, is probably still subsidizing these (especially on the low end of things), which should honestly be commended.

Heck they left the iPhone line completely the same for now. Impressive.
Yes, price increases are never popular, but this is Apple matching price increases across the industry. A 30+% price hike is going to be the new normal across the whole of the consumer tech industry of the next months.

Apple's smart enough to keep within this increase bracket, or slightly lower in some cases.

The bar's been set, and it won't be possible to single out any one brand or company.

Apple TV at $200? I picked one up last week and glad I did. I was planning to upgrade mine when a new one comes out, but at that price unless it has some amazing new features I'll pass. Or, I'll take a second look at Amazon's Firesticks. All I need is a decent consistent interface that streams the shows I want.

At least the Apple TV has a pretty long useful life, as long as it streams the things I want there is no need to upgrade; and streaming services have a vested interest in maintaining compatibility with older versions lest they risk losing subscribers.

when the AI bubble bursts all these data centers will have extra compute power and be looking to make back money. companies will not increase specs of consumer hardware so it will forever be weak but just powerful enough for it to connect to a cloud computer.

Alternatively, users will learn that running a slim local model can do a lot of what they want and forgo the all powerful cloud versions; and new companies will make local model apps to make the process easier for users.

I suspect much of what passes for AI for the average user is just glorified search, a local model designed to efficiently analyze search results would likely meet that need; with the added advantage of privacy. For example, provide the details of what type of movie you want to see or what TV specs you want and let the app get the results. As a bonus, it could store locally past requests and build on that.

Such specialized apps also strike at the big AI factories as users will not share information to feed their insatiable appetite for information.

My M3 Pro MBP feels extra snappy this morning for some reason. We're gonna be long time friends, ol' girl.
I’m super happy I have my 64GB M2 Max macbook pro now and don’t plan on replacing it for a LONG time. But I’m starting to regret trying to wait for the M5 based Studio…

Percentage wise the Apple TV 4K has ad a massive bump. From £169 to £249 for the ethernet equipped model. I need a 2nd one and was waiting for the inevitable new model but as it'll just be AI'ed up I'll nab one now from Amazon as they haven't caught up the price!
Yikes! Upgraded our first gen 4K TV boxes last year. One WiFi only (£169) and one with Ethernet (£169). WiFi only is a ~17% increase, the Ethernet one though is a whacking ~47% increase, dwarfing the 30% increase of the base iPad - a ~17% increase would have taken it to £199.

I’m assuming Apple has calculated the likely hit on sales and figured they’re still coming our ahead & covering increased component costs.

With production reputedly having stopped on Vision Pro and the production costs already accounted for, the price increase there vs an even greater hit on weak sales is baffling.
