Apple Launches New iCloud for Windows App in Microsoft Store

I was a Mac Genius for 7 years... troubleshooting any Apple product on a Windows device was always a pretty lousy experience.

I'm sure apple isnt giving 30% of iCloud subscription fees to MS

That's b/c the iCloud subscription is handled outside the MS App Store. Just like if you sign up for Spotify outside of the Apple App Store then Apple doesn't get a 30% cut.

While I don't personally use a Windows machine, my wife does... and so do a lot of people. This has the potential to be a great step forward. Now... if we could just get Apple to enable iMessages on Windows (or even better in the iCloud) it would be truly amazing!

Fitting analogy. Like Apple products, Mercedes are overpriced, put style over substance, are expensive to repair, and try to have as few user serviceable parts as possible, where as Toyota, like a PC, is affordable, reliable, easy to repair, and if you take good care of it it will still be working long enough for you to pass down to your kids.

Using that analogy, Apple used to be Lexus (luxury AND reliability), but now they have become Mercedes.

The iCloud app in the Windows store shows a release date of 2/1/2019. Am I looking at the right thing?
I think maybe they finished and uploaded the build on 2/1 but waited to release it. The last standalone iCloud build was in November of last year in any case.

It seems like this one just adds files on demand, as far as new features go.

Concerning the above in red, affordable is relative.

Sure, but then your kids have to drive a Toyota.

Apple today introduced a new iCloud for Windows app designed for PCs, according to a blog post shared by Microsoft. The new app is designed to allow Apple users to access their iCloud content on their Windows 10 PCs.

The iCloud app for Windows includes iCloud Drive, iCloud Photos, Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Safari Bookmarks, and more.

According to Microsoft, the iCloud Drive feature on Windows is powered by the same Windows technology behind the OneDrive Files On-Demand Feature, which lets users be more productive offline on mobile devices and quickly share files on iOS.

Apple has a support document for getting started with iCloud for Windows, which basically requires having an existing iCloud setup on an Apple device.

It adds files on demand support, at the very least.
What do you mean? I add and drag files directly to iCloud Drive that are stored in the hard drive of my computer and they sync.

With this update you can store the files in iCloud only rather than downloading all of them to your PC and taking up space, then when you need to open one it will download the specific file you need from the internet without you having to do anything. You can also mark files that you want to have on your PC at all times.
