I have the 9.7" iPad Pro, and my rMPB...

And in terms of IO, in terms of what I want to do with my devices, there is no difference. I could easily do on my iPad what I do on my Mac.

However, the question here shouldn't be about hardware... The iPad hardware is sound, and in terms of ports... Well, that varies from person to person. But I am the sort of person who has everything in iCloud Drive; I haven't used the USB ports on my MBP in a long time (read a couple of years).

So you ask, why do I still maintain two devices? Because of the software, like other posters have said, why can't I open two Pages documents side by side? Why can't I have all apps run side by side? Why can apps like YouTube not obey PiP mode when you can do it on the Mac? Why are things like a proper version of photoshop not available (and again this is not a hardware issue)?

I feel that the most limiting thin about the iPad Pro is iOS. It hasn't changed or adapted enough to take advantage of the hardware. Now I am not saying stick MacOS on it, because that would be terrible, but there must be something they can do to advance usability past emojis, bigger keyboard, etc.

Not a fan of the ads, I'd prefer a Surface Pro 4 for Word/Excel and it's more powerful than the iPad Pro IMO. I wouldn't miss LTE either, if I'm anywhere without WiFi it'll be on the train and I can tether from my iPhone if required.
"wifi weak at home--will be studying at the gym?" premise police!

Man people don't get the point of these ads. They're not for geeks. They're not for people that read tech sites. They're for average consumers who are probably rocking some old Windows PC and wouldn't know the first thing about tethering from their phone. Said another way, these ads aren't for people who post to MacRumors.
Apple originated the idea of "the computer for the rest of us" long before MR "geeks".
The Mac used to be "for average consumers", but only fanboys will agree with Apple on anything, even that it's agood idea to dump you're oh-so-complicated Mac or PC for an iPad.

Most average consumers know how to tether.

I agree with you that we aren't the target audience. Doesn't change the fact Apple promotes weird selling points that don't really match what makes an iPad Pro an attractive device (even for non-techy users). I feel like people could be misled about what an iPad is actually good for and end up regretting their purchase, even if I think the iPad is actually a very good device.
Weird ads and weak selling points indeed. It's amazing how die hard fans will defend anything, no matter how silly Apple's ad campaigns have gotten over the last few years.

iPads are a great at consuming content, computers are great at creating content.
Now if the iPads were to include a faster cpu and macOS while tethered to a keyboard and switch to iOS when not, then we're talking dream device, but as it stands, Apple wants to tie up the Mac line and push the tightly controlled iOS line.

I watched the Virus one twice, love the GHOSTS ending on that.... fun!

The ending was fun I admit, the part about struggling with a PC virus is so 2003..the reality is most viruses today are Adobe, Android, Apl , Linux etc. depends on the week

https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/bulletins/SB17-044

Apl escaped this week but check prior weeks..they populate them frequently
What happenned is PC's got secured a long time ago, moving on to softer targets (mobile)

I understand that it means the home but if you don't get WiFi in certain parts of your home, you're not exactly set up correctly and LTE is an extra cost you shouldn't require for your home.

Concur with the points made in the advertisement, and that's what I like about my iPad Pro so much. The perfect blend of portability, ease of use and battery life for my needs.

Is this Apple's subtle hint that the iPad Pro will be replacing Macs in (their) future? Hardly any updates for Mac lineups but they seem to be concentrating on iPad more and more. If that's their vision, why isn't the entire company being run with iPads? Why don't they use iPads to do data retrieval from the new MBP at the Genius Bar? Stuff like that. Because even for them, an iPad can't replace a Mac computer.

Because the people these ads target don't use their computers for any of the aforementioned tasks. The average consumer isn't editing 5k video streams, working on giant spreadsheets spanning three monitors or running multiple virtual machines on their computers. For their comparatively modest needs, an iPad more than suffices, and arguably offers a superior user experience via its touchscreen and OS built for touch from the ground up.

And one more thing - don't the people who keep spouting lies of Apple's impending demise ever get tired of being dead wrong year after year?

iPad is/should not be a replacement but a companion. Likewise, my Macbook serves only as a companion to my desktop/workstation. We could use a new Mac Pro and Mac Mini but Apple is not listening.

They might be a replacement for people who don't do anything with a computer other than consume media and take notes in class (a.k.a. what most of my friends do). But for the rest of us, we need a Mac (and that could include a desktop Mac).

There are tasks in between posting on Facebook and "editing giant spreadsheets". And a lot of people don't seem to realize this. I don't edit 5K video or giant spreadsheets either, but that does't mean an iPad Pro could replace my MacBook Pro.

Were these ads made on an iPad Pro?

About speed: It's faster than most laptops if you compare it to a laptop that's either cheap or old. Make a valid comparison (a new laptop in a similar price range) and the iPad Pro is not very powerful.
And that's precisely who the advertisement is targeted at - getting people on old PCs to consider switching over to an iPad.

About LTE: Doesn't come standard, and considering it's $130 upfront, requires a separate data plan and you can easily tether from your phone's LTE for free, the LTE version isn't very attractive for consumers (who these ads are targeted at).
I find tethering a lot more cumbersome than people here seem to be making it out to be. When I want connectivity on my iPad, I want it immediately, not wait that few seconds to go to the wifi settings and tether. Plus, it drains my phone's battery even more quickly.

I am a teacher using my iPad in the classroom and I have a multi-sim which uses the same data pool as my iPhone. It's just more convenient to have a dedicated 4g connection for importing files from dropbox and staying connected to the internet 24/7.

About it having a touchscreen: almost all devices besides Macs have one nowadays. And Apple is trying to steal sales from buyers of relatively cheap Windows laptops, not Mac buyers. Those usually have touchscreens as well.
Not all touchscreen interfaces are created equal. Windows laptops sport operating systems designed with a keyboard and mouse in mind. iOS (and iOS apps) was designed from the ground up for touch and direct input. All other things equal, iOS apps will work better on a touchscreen compared to its desktop equivalent.

Again, no mention that LTE is a $130 optional feature. I'd figure a student would just use tethering from its phone rather than buy a new device + the extra $130 option + a second data plan.
Convenience vs price. I chose convenience.

Word is on iPad, cool. Now how exactly do you "do more" on an iPad Pro vs Word for Windows? Let's be honest, Microsoft Office is better used on a Windows laptop than on an iPad Pro, even if you bought the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard.
The primary reason I liked pages on my iPad is because it has just 20% of the features on Word for the desktop, and these are the 20% that I really only need. This means fewer redundant features cluttering up the interface, allowing me to better focus on getting work done, rather than grappling with a bloated interface.

The trick here is that "more" isn't always better, especially when "more" doesn't give people more of what they want, but instead saddles them with more confusion and complications that they need to contend with. Complexity is not the selling point here. Simplicity is.

The one is probably the most valid selling point of the bunch, but then again it's not a very exclusive feature considering a bunch of other devices (iPhones, Macs, Android devices, Chromebooks) don't either. What if someone already does his content consumption on an iPhone and real work on a Mac?
Then they don't buy one. Plain and simple.

The ad at least gets people to re-evaluate their needs. How many people were browsing social media on their desktops long before it became prevalent on smartphones. How many people are performing tasks on a PC that doesn't really require the full processing power of a PC, and they would be better off trading the complexity of a PC for the simplicity and ease and use of an iPad?

I own an iPad Pro 9.7" and love it. But those ads are really far from depicting the reasons why I do. Apple tries really hard to promote the iPad Pro as something it's not.
I use the iPad to teach in the classroom and it's really an amazing device.

I would say that the iPad is superior in ways that aren’t important to you, and that’s fine – but just because you don’t value the same things as other people doesn’t make the product substandard. You should be able to look beyond your own needs and tastes. Not everyone is the same as you.

Weak adverts. But Tim Cook seems to love the iPad Pro more than the Mac.

Strange time to make new iPad Pro adverts when the line up of iPads should be refreshed soon. Unless they are trying to get rid of excess old supply.

or they might just be trying to create an earworm so that when they do release the new models in whenever folks will be more open to the idea

These ads are excellent and very well done. Reminds me very much of the Mac vs PC ads. Classy. Apple continues to position the iPad Pro as a computer replacement even more "for the masses". MacRumors forums once again however, never fails to impress me with its relentlessly sheer negativity. :)

Great work Apple.

Change in the form of on-ground networks ending, most of your data and programs run from the cloud.
When that happens, a single powerful device is not important. The experiences are, as is the availability everywhere on many surfaces. Less than 10 years from that reality.

Apl knows this...that's why they are trying desperately to transition to a services/entertainment company. Only real question is when the decline happens in Iphone..I think it has. It will recover this year due to X in the short-term then decline permanently IMO. they tried the same thing to pro-up ipad you saw interest then meh.

People have been saying that from years...

Apple keeps making money than the 2 next biggest companies combined.

Apple is "trying desperately", then how about YouTube Red? How about Google Play Music?

I really love my iPad Pro, an awesome device for content, though come typing and say replying on forums like MR, it's ackward and I always reach for my iPad Air 2. Keeps me thinking the iPad 2 form factor is the perfect one for an iPad.

For myself, it will never come close to replacing a computer. And it's weird as I really like so much about it, and yet I would say I use the iPad Air 2 90% of the time if I type on it .

Also MR proves yet again the sheer and utter positivity Promoting a product that is not fit for purpose .

If I need a hammer, I don't need people telling me a screwdriver will also do the job, and getting upset if I complain that a screwdriver is not a hammer. I dont actually consider myself to be the problem ;)

And yes I own a iPad Pro and love it
