The 16gb being noted on the back, as well as the screws not being present makes me feel quite certain this is an actual production unit for the launch next month. This new phone is likely to be on sale in less than a month, so it would seem very likely they're already producing these phones somewhere in an Asian factory.

Yes this is totally planned by Apple, it's so obvious.

Either that or the people they give preproduction iPhones to are idiots. As Oscar Wilde put it, "To lose one parent, Mr Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness." I really doubt they planned this, it's not Apple's style to release information on upcoming products before they officially announce them.

As always with Apple, they know a new design is enough "pull" to sell it. Capacity will be below expectations, leaving room for a bump down the line. IMO, unless they offer 3 capacity options, the 64GB won't be available initially. But if it is, expect it to be stupid expensive. There's always at least one let-down when a new model of anything arrives. Call me cynical. :apple:

Not cynical, just sounds like an experienced Apple user:)

I always wait 3-4 months after any new model is introduced. They usually quietly add specs or update things, same price more capacity etc.etc..

The reason for that is probably that when Apple orders millions of 64 GBs or anything it needs to fit into manufacturers production schedules.
The prices for 16GB then drops as 32GB is the new lowest totem pole item and 64 GB goes to the 32GB price and it all fits.

So, about 3 months for the 64 GBs to be available enough to put into the iphone etc.

Since this is apparently becoming a common occurrence, I think macrumors should post a new guide: "Using and documenting your found and/or stolen prototype iPhone".

This guide/tutorial should be filled with tips on what photos and video to shoot to prove it's legit, how to disassemble your prototype (including instructions for units with or without screws), what sorts of apps or tests to run, advice on keeping it from being remotely wiped or disabled (would airplane mode work?), names of good lawyers to contact should Apple or law enforcement raid your bar/blog headquarters/country/mom's basement, etc.

That way, when the next prototype is found out in the wild (probably within the next few days at the rate things are going), the Apple rumors community can have all the information we need about the prototype, while avoiding the person in possession of it any embarrassment over what s/he should have done.

i reckon they are leaking fake versions and then suprise everyone with something amazing!

nah like that would happen.

but it actually looks nicer then the last time i saw it

i can imagine it now.

Jobs: 'you didnt really think that was it did you?'

Yep, that's the seam. It's ugly. Very unApple like.

Not really...

Look at the 1st Gen iPhone from the side:
original_iphone_set_2t.jpg

People would be sh¡tting bricks today saying that the back was soooo un-Apple like that the AL didn't cover the whole back.

I kinda like the seam on the sides of the 4th Gen... It's a little bit of a nod to the original IMO. I do not like the seam on the top though....

You do understand that this gives them a competitive advantage correct? And they don't end up looking like Microsoft with all of their cancelled projects. Apple cancels projects too, you just never find out about it.

Please explain the "competitive advantage" angle. And how Apple seemed to do pretty well without this kind of leak in the past.

Those never were going to stay.. that's just the mark of a prototype. The circuit boards also probably had extra monitoring/diagnostic pins, different chipsets and semi removable components that the final version won't have.

Because the 3GS has no screws there.Oh wait....

I will not buy a new iPhone until it has at least 64 GB of flash installed. Like many of you, I was hoping that this would happen with the June model, but at this point it seems HIGHLY unlikely. :( We've now seen a 16 GB model which implies a 16 / 32 GB only offering. It also appears that the new phone still only has one flash memory slot, and since 64 GB flash prices have remained high and even gone UP the last year or so, I cannot see Apple offering a very high price 64 GB model. It would just be too expensive in today's market.

I'll keep my fingers crossed here, but Apple has always tried to keep the prices of their high / low end models similar between years, and 64 GB modules are not even close to the cost that 32 GB modules were last year, so to me the odds are very slim we'll see a 64 GB model, since it would probably cost $1000 unsubsidized.

Screen Resolution

Looking at the picture of the screen the last line seems to read something like "08:8A2062a<space>Root:<space>...<space><space>Inf:1.0" and that text takes up about 39% of the screen width (calculated by zooming the image to full screen width on my 23" monitor and measuring with a tape measure).

If we count the four "."s and three ":"s as only two "real" characters (i.e. characters of decent width) then that's a total of 24 "real" characters rendered in 40% of the screen width, i.e. about 61 characters across the whole screen. If this was the old 320 pixel screen width then that's about 5.25 pixels per "real" character and to me, looking at the numbers, there's no way it's that few pixels per character. At 480 pixel width it's about 8 pixels per "real" character and at 640 pixel width it would be about 10.5 pixels per "real" character.

My personal opinion on the basis of the above, and looking at how the numbers and letters (i.e. what I am calling "real" characters) are rendered, there is no way it's the old 3GS resolution and I'm tending towards thinking that it really might be the full 960 x 480 that has been rumoured.

Tony,

It will come. Soon.

I think the two buttons look antiquated. Hey, that's me.
But if that bad boy has an A4 in it... Let the credit card slide baby!!!

Yeah bizarre people are questioning if real etc.

They would need at least a million at launch therefore these would have been getting put together in their thousands already - hence the leak!

This is going to be one wierd presentation from Jobs, he might have to pull something extra special out the bag to make the event a success in the shock stakes i.e. some missing feature

If this will be the final design unveiled by Apple in a few weeks, will you still keep referring to it as a "prototype"?

Prototype. Derived from the Greek word prototypos.
Proto = first. Typos = impression.

In engineering and electronics, a fully functional yet experimental construction with little to no aesthetic effort or consideration taken.

This is not a #!&€)(/"@(%# prototype, it's a pre-production model.
The hardware equivalent of a release candidate, or at worst, a beta.

Wow - you're, like, insane.

Or an Engineer.

Can't decide.

Zapfino?!

Anyone else kind of weirded out that they used zapfino as the "inferno" type on the burn in program?

Why would they want to underclock the chip? For battery life maybe? Because the HTC has a 1 GHz chip.

Apple's not out to outspec HTC, they aren't going to advertise the chip speed unless it does happens to be faster.

The A4 in the iPad has a relatively massive battery to chew on. On the iPhone it's going to have to sip.

Oh god, that is horrible! The android, of course. Ouch.

Yeah. I WANTED the Incredible. My contract is up in July (officially). I went and played with an Incredible and was not impressed. The back was clunky and very plasticky. Yes, the OS was nice, Sense ran beautifully, but the phone felt cheap. I'd rather give a little in OS and get a nicer form function.

Sorry, back to topic.

Anyone think that Gizmodo's more of a final version than this one? I dont' know but I think the screws will be there. I don't have a problem with them, nor do I have a problem with the seams...

lol, excellent work

I checked the 480p video on youtube (engaget) and I dunno - maybe the screen is a higher resolution?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AAnUHePbe4
Skip to 1:45 and watch in 480p mode, the text does look fairly crisp.

I'm 100% sure the screen resolution of the prototype is greater than 480x320. I took a screenshot of the YouTube video just after 1:45 and tried to get text that small looking that sharp on a screen 320 pixels wide in Photoshop. It just isn't possible. There aren't enough pixels on a 480x320 screen to get text that sharp.

I think you might just be able to achieve text that sharp at 720x480 but my guess is that the screen is 960x640. On a 960x640 image in Photoshop I am able to get text looking very similar.

True but I guess it has less screen to light up, I mean iPad must be a good 4-5 iphone screens right?

Hopefully we should see stunning battery life on this thing
