Proto...Type.

I hope this is an earlier pre-prod model. And I really don't like the breaks in the aluminium bezel. Gizmodo suggested the final version would have a single, uniform bezel. Fingers crossed.

RE: the guys fingernail.
Go to the damn site and you can see it's a guy...he's smiling in one of the pics.
Stoopid ppl... :D

sooooo... WHATS THE RESOLUTION SIZE!?

still waiting to hear some real info on this.

EDIT: btw, for people who dont know, vietnamese culture (south east asia culture for that matter) tends to leave their pinkie nails long, I believe for superstitious luck, or class, or picking their nose/ear... but yea its definitely a cultural thing. I remember growing up, one or two of my vietnamese friends would do the same thing, it just didn't occur to me until years later.

can't wait for more pissed people dropping iPhones in the pub!

Haha.... yes, thank you. People are just dying to come up with any reason to explain the seams.

LoL yes they are. They can't just stand the fact that the people that designed the new phone actually know why they are there...... they didn't just put them there so people can bitch about it. SO all the whiners need to zip the pie hole until Stevie boy walks out on stage on 22 Jun 2010 and actually TELLS them what they are for. Another thing is the screw issue.... FFS look at the bottom of your 3g/3gs..... omg what can that be? Those screws are so "un-apple". Yeah, right.

Surely this is all a publicity stunt carefully thought out by Apple?

Why would they NOT fire the guy who left the 1st one in a cafe otherwise?

I hope they take off those damn emi shields and show us what chips are in this thing, maybe we'll learn a thing or two about the radio.

It's hard to read the writing on the screen but one can at least imagine how crisp it will look with the increased screen resolution. I can't wait!

If you have an iPhone, close your eyes, set it on a desk and spin it around. Now find the headphone socket. You have a 50% chance of trying to insert your headphone pug into the speaker hole or the screw hole next to it.

On the new model, run your nail down the short edge, as soon as you catch on the 'seam' you know the socket is about 5mm beyond that.

I know it could just be ornamental, but Apple's DNA seems to only include design elements that have a function, ie. Dieter Rams 2nd rule of good design.

M.

No disrespect but are you an idiot.

Its easy to find the headphone socket, even with your eyes closed.

Feel for the home button. "Its on the front"

The headphone socket is at the other end.

From the pics with the boot-up text, the screen resolution doesn't seem much higher (if any) from the original 480x320 of the iphone, even though it's supposed to be called "HD"

Thoughts?

If it's exactly pixel doubled you wouldn't be able to tell if the background images hadn't had their resolution increased from the 3G/3GS native resolution, which I doubt they would have in this sort of test firmware.

A big hint in that direction I suspect, which gives two possibilities -

1. We're not getting a memory bump this year as Apple are trying to retain costs at the same level as the 3GS and things like the better screen and camera have added to the cost base. Understandable.

2. There will be three models - 16, 32 and 64GB versions, but unlike the 3G continuing to be available last year with the 3GS launch, this new iPhone will be all that's sold, and this 16GB will be the cheapo version rather than the 3GS filling that slot.

This would make sense as I'm sure Apple are keen to unify the processor architecture of anything using the iPhone OS to the A4 chip ASAP, and the sooner they stop selling 3GSes the easier that's achieved. You also only require one production line for case designs etc to be maintained rather than two, though I do think the 32GB would suffer a considerable sales drop off as a result of doing this. Also completely understandable as a strategy.

I still hope the "old" 3GS gets 64 GB and is sold beside the new iPhoneHD with 16 and 32 GB - or take a look to the Pad, there you can get up to 64 GB and it starts from 16 GB nevertheless... So, maybe an 16 GB - version for the poor and a 64 GB - version for the rich...

Is it just me or do both cameras seem bigger? That back lens looks huge and the front facing lens looks larger and more to the left of the ear speaker than the Gizmodo prototype.

I'm excited for this iPhone! Although I hope it comes in other colors than black.

Video on engadget of the phone .... It looks fake look at the inferno thing and it looks very flimsy in the video

Whats with you guys adamantly thinking that those "breaks" in the aluminum are just random seams?

It seems like they could be some kind of indicator lights or something. They're both in the exact same spots for the right and left side, and then another one on top. Seems to me like it would be an indicator light for any orientation you decide to hold it since they happen to be in the same spot for both the right and left side.

Just doesn't seem like thats something random and unintentional, but rather an intended feature we don't know yet.

That would be awesome! Then, even more people would be jumping on the latest hardware, and that'd mean a better experience. Fewer complaints, and more enjoyment.

Exactly, this makes me sad. If I want to fit all my music on my phone I need a 64 gig! Im fed up of having to juggle playlists and apps.

If they were keeping a 16 gig model, you would HOPE they are retaining the 3GS at 16 gig (like they do now with the 3G at 8gig) and have the HD at 32 and 64.

But since this is a pre-production model, naturally Apple could just be testing the waters to see what capacities they can deliver to remain on a par with the competition for the next 12 months. I wonder what other phones are offering 64 gig capacities right now? If no-one else is, I can well imagine Apple holding back on the 64 gig until Christmas or next June.

Hmm..., but other phones got SD-card-slotes!

I am going to have to agree with you, if you look at the resolution detail on that persons thumb (thumbprint is visible) as well as lines in the hand in general, the device in that persons hand looks similar to regular iphone resolution.

If this is something the guy 'bought' in the US, why then does it not have a proper FCC ID code on the back, and what looks like a load of X's?

Hasn't passed through FCC yet?

If this iphone can actually use a full sized sim ill cry with joy

What would the implications be with the new phone having the A4 chip as opposed to the one thats in there now?
well on a few online comparisons - (although it cannot directly be compared... you can get a rough idea) the ipad was around 30~40% faster at loading thing like apps/webpages

Considering that the leaked iPhone 4G photos have been around for a while now, it's very possible that this is a real counterfeit iPhone - there are plenty of them around. This also explains the screws missing, as little details are regularly lost with these black market copies. Just a theory...

I agree. Honestly, I believe the lack of screws may be an indication of a forgery more than anything else. Look at the production model 3GS. Screws.

It doesn't look high res, and you're right... comparing to the quality of the rest of the image, that screen doesn't seem like much.
