From the pics with the boot-up text, the screen resolution doesn't seem much higher (if any) from the original 480x320 of the iphone, even though it's supposed to be called "HD"

Thoughts?

After all the images we have seen of this phone you would think that someone would have had enough sense to get magnifying glass on the screen to check out the screen resolution.

As for this photo you have absolutely no chance of deciding what the screen resolution is. The whole photo is only 960 × 638 pixels at 72 dpi

Did you guys see the Video on Engadget? Anyone in her able to translate what they are talking ?

BTW: I Love the Phones design. I hate :apple:s lack of secrecy!

16 GB is plenty. You don't need to carry everything on your phone.

It's nearly half way through 2010 and you can't upgrade the iphone memory with a memory card, unlike the competition.
16gb isn't plenty it's just enough. Really they should be doing 32 / 64gb.
If this thing has the regular screen AND it's only 16/32 but with the A4 chip? I dunno if I'm convinced I want one, I need some incentive here and front cameras don't do it for me.

I checked the 480p video on youtube (engaget) and I dunno - maybe the screen is a higher resolution?

Skip to 1:45 and watch in 480p mode, the text does look fairly crisp.

All i can tell there is a decent viewing angel, but compared to my 3GS it doesn´t seem like a real improvement.

I just thought if these are preproduction units, the screen might not be the real deal. On the other hand there would not be much sense running a screen burn test on the wrong screen...

Well lets just wait for June, shall we ?

Too bad it comes with just 16GB. I was really hoping the base models comes with 32Gb as standard. I still like it though.

If you visit the Viatnamese forum site, browse through all of the gallery. In one of the first smaller pics, he has the SIM tray pulled out and exposed. Either my mind is playing tricks on me, or that is a full size SIM.

The sim craddle is half the size of the sim... mind tricks yes...
Eyes are glued only on the iPhone so it makes things look different...

My wife wants to carry one device that has all her music on it, plus have the smarts of the iPhone. Her iTunes library is about 45GB currently, so she is waiting until the next iPhone when hopefully there will be a 64GB version so she can not have to have a phone and an iPod, just the iPhone.

16GB isn't plenty, not anymore.

You do understand that this gives them a competitive advantage correct? And they don't end up looking like Microsoft with all of their cancelled projects. Apple cancels projects too, you just never find out about it.

At 3.05 it looks like there is a screw inside the sim card slot? On the left is the hole for the ejection tool, but on the right a screw? Maybe holding the unit together?

The screws are gone, woot. They didn't look that good on the design of it, in my opinion.

Those never were going to stay.. that's just the mark of a prototype. The circuit boards also probably had extra monitoring/diagnostic pins, different chipsets and semi removable components that the final version won't have.

i think gizmodo has the real deal (still an prototype but that one is going to be the final product) , this is just an early prototype.

the grey circle around the camera is just ugly compared with the gizmodo version

I do understand.

The thing is just that there has been a Time you wouldn't be able to know anything about an upcoming product from :apple:. There would be a Day and BOOM -> One more thing!

These times are over and that makes me sad. (loved the thrills)

Today :apple: is a huge consumer E compan Y and they have to go down to different methods because the "Average Joe" (used to get MSFT products) expects it.

I do like that all them EVO-Lovers now will have a hard time choosing!

It's an in-store fake....? for Cutomer Handling.

The screen never changes does it in the video... Why is it locked to that screen image if it be the real thing?
Perhaps someone bought the earlier protype that was in the wild...

P.S. I did go to a cafe in Vietname in Hue called Apple Cafe and the logo was the reversed Apple Corp. logo on the building... Anyway...

Think maybe the screen is a bit to low resolution to be the real deal.

Also managed to get the hold on a forum post written on vietnamese about this specific "lost" iPhone with some more photos :D.

Great find. There are also pics of this particular phone trying to sync with iTunes, and iTunes is recognizing it as a phone with unreleased firmware/in recovery mode. For all you guys claiming this is a knockoff.

...it's spreading on the web like hell, it's effectiv, and it costs them not one penny!

Apple wants the entire first half of 2010 to be all about iPad. All this "marketing" is doing is taking focus away from iPad.

It must be costing Apple many iPhone 3GS sales. People who otherwise wouldn't pay attention to rumor sites have heard about this on the local news and/or mainstream media. So they might wait a month instead of blindly rushing out to their AT&T store to get the 3GS right now. And that will affect Apple's sales this quarter.

I would think it's unlikely. The iPad has 16, 32 and 64GB options, even with 3G, so there should be the same for the next iPhone.

Ahhh, an iPhone is how many times smaller than an iPad? The only reason the iPod touch could fit in 64GB was with 2x 32GB flash. The iPhone doesn't have space for 2 because of the extra cell/communications/GSM chip that the touch doesn't have.

Logic would suggest that the only way we will see 64GB in the next gen iPhone is if single 64GB flash memory is freely available (i'm not sure it is). And based on all the additional upgrades (extra cam, higher res screen, etc) how can they keep this at a similar cost? And what will be left to upgrade next year?!

Uh, how would you know from the video? You have no way of knowing what resolution screen you're looking at based on that burn in test app on the screen.

The screen never changes does it in the video... Why is it locked to that screen image if it be the real thing?

This is obviously a test application.

Also, this is probably months old. It's running "8A206.." Beta 1 was 8A230m, no?

A 16 GB and a 64 GB model would make a lot of sense seeing as the 32 GB iPad is the least popular of the bunch. Although they could still easily do 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GBs. They're just trying to get as many customers as they can with lower cost units. I wouldn't be surprised if we see the iPhone 3GS or a similar substitute carry on as the very low-end model.

Did you guys see the Video on Engadget? Anyone in her able to translate what they are talking ?

They're just describing and pointing out the differences e.g.
  • slimmer and longer dimensions
  • feels heavier, sturdier/stronger
  • glass front and back
  • camera with flash
  • front facing camera
  • same screen size
  • sharp edges sort of hurt your hands
  • microSIM slot can fit a regular SIM cut down
