Those never were going to stay.. that's just the mark of a prototype.
You mean a prototype like the current iPhone 3G/3GS which has similar screws on the 30-pin connector...? Those sure stayed.

The very oldest iPhone HD prototype seen in pictures from China had no screws on it (or Apple markings, for that matter). The more recent one, the Powell/Gizmodo specimen, had screws.

What is this Tag for?

It looks like a PCB ribbon which connects to the back of the case.

I was convinced it was a fake, but then...

So I was looking at all this and figured it was a fake because even in the video the guy never leaves the burnin application. I'm sure that something is up with that.. maybe there's nothing else you can do with it, and its locked into that or something, but anyway...

I was convinced that the whole thing was just fake, until I saw the video
( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AAnUHePbe4 )

Which could have bee faked as well, except that the battery level while the guy is talking subtly goes from 3% at around 00:56 to 2 % at 01:51

It might still be fake, but that ups the ante in my book.

Ahhh, an iPhone is how many times smaller than an iPad? The only reason the iPod touch could fit in 64GB was with 2x 32GB flash. The iPhone doesn't have space for 2 because of the extra cell/communications/GSM chip that the touch doesn't have.

Logic would suggest that the only way we will see 64GB in the next gen iPhone is if single 64GB flash memory is freely available (i'm not sure it is). And based on all the additional upgrades (extra cam, higher res screen, etc) how can they keep this at a similar cost? And what will be left to upgrade next year?!

I wish this didn't make sense but it totally does :(

It certainly does and its amazing that the amount of people have changed their tune about the new form factor. There was so much whinging from the anorexic fanboys saying 'Ewwww they better round of the edges or else im not getting it'

Now the forums are awash at how beautiful it is. LOL!

Truth is this is certainly going to fly of the shelves once it hits this year. Apple seem to have cracked all the flaws associated with the previous phones. Looks the business in my view, cant wait for it.

When I first saw it I didn't like it, it looked too thick. One of the photos had it next to a 3GS phone. Once I saw it was the same as the current phone I was ok with it...

Good spot. I suspect though that it'll be underclocked for the iPhone maybe circa 800MHz.

M.
Why would they want to underclock the chip? For battery life maybe? Because the HTC has a 1 GHz chip.

I checked the 480p video on youtube (engaget) and I dunno - maybe the screen is a higher resolution?

Skip to 1:45 and watch in 480p mode, the text does look fairly crisp.

Well that commentary was insightful. :p

A lot of men I know/see here in SE Asia have a long fingernail or two (usually the pinky). The common reasoning is Number 2 that Flhusky mentioned. This still holds true, especially with rural, agrarian men who have migrated to the city to study/teach at universities or work in office jobs. But some of the folks I know give simpler reasons such as a "handy" tool or fashion.

The hand in the photo is very likely a man because he only has two long nails.

Then he and others like him should just paint them and just come to marvelous terms with their sexuality. :D

at first I thought this thing looked so ugly, but now I really like it, it's so shiny, too :)

also, to the guy who spotted the screw in the sim slot - good spot. This would confirm the need for the screws at the bottom of the phone to be taken away.

i believe the seams are there for nothing more than ease of opening the phone when the screw is taken out.

the 'seams' flow nicely with the case anyway so its not as if you will be able to feel them.

I sure hope that guy is a left handed classical guitar player, or he needs nail clippers more than any kind of phone.

In east asia it symbolizes high social standing. Originally, if you had a long fingernail you weren't working on a farm or doing something with your hands.

I am so much happier with the styling.

I like my iPhone, but I've always hated that it looks like some cheap plastic toy from the '70s, particularly with the cheesy faux-chrome thing around the edge. It was especially confusing, since Apple's laptops, for example, exude this cool metallic minimalism.

This looks a lot more 'modern'...this iPhone fits in much better with the rest of Apple's product line.

From the pics with the boot-up text, the screen resolution doesn't seem much higher (if any) from the original 480x320 of the iphone, even though it's supposed to be called "HD"

Thoughts?

Perhaps the 16GB one comes with the current screen and the 80GB one comes with a high res screen ?

Has everyone forgotten the other prototype was 80GB ?

Whats with you guys adamantly thinking that those "breaks" in the aluminum are just random seams?

It seems like they could be some kind of indicator lights or something. They're both in the exact same spots for the right and left side, and then another one on top. Seems to me like it would be an indicator light for any orientation you decide to hold it since they happen to be in the same spot for both the right and left side.

Just doesn't seem like thats something random and unintentional, but rather an intended feature we don't know yet.

Would it be nice if those seams became touch sensitive? That they're actually able to be capacative, and so you could use touch round the edge of the phone as UI?

Maybe the sides are squeeze buttons, you squeeze the entire side and it goes in. The breaks are to give room for the side to move in.

Breaks on side= camera application in landscape.
Breaks on both sides= Both ways (wasn't Jobs going on about how every app should function no matter what orientation).
