Apple needs to move the iPhone into a cheaper market. Making a 16 gb model is one way.

I can't believe there is an up-front cost for the iPhone in the USA!

Hopefully it's free on the same plans as it is today, and a 3GS model stays on being free on a lower monthly fee.

Surely that's part of the success in other countries.

(I guess the high prices are due to its exclusivity to AT&T. Here it's offered on five carriers and also outright and unlocked from Apple directly)

Perhaps the 16GB one comes with the current screen and the 80GB one comes with a high res screen ?

Has everyone forgotten the other prototype was 80GB ?

So devs had to adjust their apps to the 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4G small screen and 4G big screen?

Err, no.

iPhone pixel count and resolution

As mentioned earlier (when the 'Gizmodo' phone was taken apart) the borders around the LCD panel are slightly larger, in all directions (like 1 mm). As you may notice when comparing a 3G/S iPhone to this one, the spacing above and beneath the speaker grill is also slightly larger. The phone itself has approximately the same dimensions however. This leads to my assumption the LCD panel is a 3.4" one. The only reason for using a smaller panel is that production facilities in China already pump out these parts in volume. Common pixel count for the 3.4" size is currently 720x480. Apple would be crazy not to use this option, and save a boat load of money at the same time (word in the street is the part is 30% cheaper than the 3GS LCD). The Meizu display is a low-quality (specced at 16k colors) one, but I see no problems for Apple having a high-quality (65k or 262k colors) part produced with further identical specs. Apart from that, the 'competition' uses displays up to 960x480. Sticking with 480x320 for the 4th generation will look like a step back...

Hey guys,

i am Vietnamese and i can guarantee u that the hand that is holding the iPhone is a man's hand...
...apparently the Vietnamese MAC website that the photos originally came from crashed earlier cause too many people tried to access it... i like the look of the new iPhone i dont know why many people hate it... it got a big ass camera on the back and the design looks much better than the 3G and 3GS....

i have been poison to it... and i want it to get announce at the upcoming WWDC...

Maybe the sides are squeeze buttons, you squeeze the entire side and it goes in. The breaks are to give room for the side to move in.

Breaks on side= camera application in landscape.
Breaks on both sides= Both ways (wasn't Jobs going on about how every app should function no matter what orientation).

Finally, an intelligent observation about those! Yes that would make good sense, it might also be logical to use them as next/prev buttons for music.

Would it be nice if those seams became touch sensitive? That they're actually able to be capacative, and so you could use touch round the edge of the phone as UI?

The seams could simply be clip points to secure addons such as game controllers or even (gasp) keyboards.

I predict Jobs will show off addons such as a glucose analyzer.

The docking port is the primary feature that the iPhone has over other devices.

The iPhone has run out of physical buttons. What with multitasking, iPod controls (even with the new positioning), home screen, search from home screen... It is getting too complicated.

It would make sense for Apple to add some new hard buttons. They already separated the volume rocker: two buttons, which can have different functions in different apps.

The same applies for the side squeeze keys. Trigger for camera, next/back for iPod app, even a fitness application (100 reps of squeeze :D ).

i reckon they are leaking fake versions and then suprise everyone with something amazing!

nah like that would happen.

but it actually looks nicer then the last time i saw it

Sh*t. I thought it was a goat.

Would they go about so much trouble to build working devices with new electronics, just to fool us?

The A4 uses the same type of processor used in the iPhone 3GS. The Apple A4 is just a bunch of off-the-shelf parts designed by other companies and put in a single package stamped with the Apple logo.

It will probably be clocked faster than the 3GS, but it's not any kind of revolutionary change in processor type or power.

With so many being produced over seas, it seems feasible that one or two of them might slip up.

*Edit* It was purchased by someone in the US...

Apple the paranoid company for some reason looses two iphones when they have not done so before.

Can we say marketing. Or has Apple become loose goose with their products. Apple must not be sure of them selves this time to have a winner.

I thought the same thing when I saw it was symetrical ... clip points.

Even if the microarchitecture is the same, there have been reportedly some important improvements like doubled memory bandwidth from a 32-bit memory controller to a 64-bit controller and increased L2 cache. The improved memory controller is probably more important for the GPU though than the CPU, but the extra cache should ensure better performance scaling with clock speed.

Apple wants the entire first half of 2010 to be all about iPad. All this "marketing" is doing is taking focus away...

All this talk About Apple intentionally leaking info this way is getting totally prepostorous. do you really think Apple would intentionally let the authorities ransack Gizmodo offices or lose iphones in Vietnam to market the iPhone?

It's time some people get a bit in touch with how the real world works.. These things were lost or smuggled out of a factory and someone found them. Nothing more than that.

Done with security???

Either Apple has given up all hopes of keeping this product secret or they are seeding them out for publicity!
