Is this packing only for US. I saw some article that EU has some laws that companies cannot sell without proper accessories. In India this will surely drive people away. The Pro Max costs more than a kidney.
Kidneys are cheap in India! So the expression "Man.. I'd sell a kidney for that" doesn't hold up on the sub continent? 😂🤣

But it was announced from the top of a solar roof so I think they REALLY want to be environment friendly. /s
Yeah that was quite unnecessary. Borderline snobbish than actually showing genuine effort.
I mean if Apple is really concerned about the environment, why not open up a recycling program for all older chargers and earpods and give some credits to customers? No? But they want to sell you more of those instead.

Good. Now all the people complaining about Apple being greedy can stop saying those frivolous things.

Including EarPods sucks for the environment. Instead, Apple can use *SOME* of the money saved towards reinvesting in R&D in other areas. (yes, OF COURSE they'll pocket some of that savings too)

I was one of those people earlier and I'm actually happy Apple is doing this.

Well said. I still have new, unused EarPods and charging bricks. Even when you trade in your old devices, you keep these items — so I have plenty on hand — I don’t need or even want more.

There will be people whining about this and claiming the motivation behind it is greed — but you can’t argue with the environmental impact they are negating by this move. I’m sure other manufacturers will follow their lead, just as they typically do.

Nobody would be complaining if they reduced the price of the phone by the cost of earbuds and a power brick. Instead they are knocking $10 bucks off the individual accessories but even then they are still overpriced.

It’s not an issue for long time iPhone owners who have more charging bricks, 35 mm earbuds, 35 mm to lighting earbud adapters and lighting earbuds than anyone could ever need but if I were a first time iPhone owner I wouldn’t be happy to have to pay that much for the phone and still have to shell out more to charge the thing and get working headphones. Talk about being nickled and dimed. I’m be pissed.

They should include some kind of digital coupon that allows first time iPhone 12 owners to obtain a charging brick and earbuds when they buy a new unit online and register it under a new Apple ID. If you buy the iPhone in person you should be offered these free of charge if you want them as well. That would still vastly reduce their carbon footprint since they wouldn’t ship with the phone and the majority of users who already have these accessories would pass on the offer while at the same time it wouldn’t alienate first time smart phone owners and switchers who may need these accessories.

Wait a minute. Apple says we have piles of them. Why on earth would they supply for the first time in history a USB-C charging cable?

Oh wait.....

All you need to do is complain to customer support after you receive your new iPhone, tell them you can't charge your new iPhone, and I suspect they will ship you a free power adapter - to avoid you returning your $1000+ device.

I was exaggerating a little. There are so many memes/jokes for iPhone in India. When iPhone 6 was released there was a joke that a guy was walking with the iPhone 6 in his pocket, fell down and heard a big crack. He prayed “God, let it be my leg”

I still think that even with reduction in prices, customers are getting less for their money. For the same price, I am getting less in the box. Touting environmental benefits is fine if you were shaving off equivalent amount from the retail price of the phone, not when you’re charging regular and including less in the box.

There may be billions of adapters on the planet, but there is none for the guy who buys his first iPhone. That guy will have to pay more now. On top of that, if I have 3 iPhones in family, I want the ability to charge them at the same time. Again, if I am buying new, that’s 3 new adapters added to the billions. If I am new to iPhone and buying 3 for my family, again, 3 new adapters for each of them, unless I like to wait to charge mine while the other one charges. Where’s the environmental saving? In that regard, let’s just have one outhouse/ bathroom in the house since that’s saving water, among other things. It’s just how Apple chooses to market their greed, and people love falling for that somehow.

Not to say this won’t impact the environment positively, I’m only saying this could have been handled more gracefully for the person who wants the adapter and for the person who doesn’t. Like I said, shaving off retail price of adapter from the iPhone pricing for the one who doesn’t want an adapter would have been a good nudge to the guy who has spare adapters in the house, to save both his money and planet. That would be good. And not as greedy as possible.

The adapter probably costs Apple about $1 to produce, and the wired earphones maybe $2. You wouldn't notice the cost savings even if they applied them, and it's easily possible they've been swallowed up in other technologies included in these best-ever iPhone 12s.

You collect them? You could donate them to people who actually need them and stop acting like it was a problem that Apple included something in the box that was functional for your device.
I’d love for Apple stores to have a donation box but they won’t “due to Covid”

That’s the thinking Apple would probably bet on.

Maybe car makers should do the same with respect to tires. You have a car with tires, save the planet and buy a tire-less car at the same price as always. You can use your old ones. There are billions of tires on the planet and the carbon footprint reduced would be phenomenal. If you don’t have a car already, just buy new tires to go with your new car!

Well. Instead of selling 217 million headphones, chargers to collect dust in a box large enough to contain them and the phone, they can sell 217 million phones in substantially smaller boxes and then sell the headphones or chargers separately to those who want them. there won’t be 217 million charger purchases.

so yes, this is much better for the environment

********. This has zero effect at all. If Apple cares about the environment, they would force all their employees to be vegan. But they don‘t do that right?

It is all about profits, profits and profits.

Well I'm standing in the lots of extra chargers, cables and headphones crowd. I only use wireless charging anyway and if not I plug into, idk, a computer, the usb port on my tv, in my car, literally anywhere.

I agree with the position of it being unnecessary waste. Sorry if you guys don't already have this stuff, I only really sympathise if you're buying this for your kids who've never had an iPhone before.

I doubt very much you can plug this cable into your TV or car or very many other places. It is a USB C cable.

No, the thinking of Apple is they can sell more overpriced accessories.

In the past, I bought an Apple device and that was it.

Now when I buy something from Apple, Apple employees always try to sell me additional overpriced accessories.

So it is a clear strategy of Apple to make more profits.

No joke what happened this week. I bought a new Apple Watch 6 and the Apple employee asked if I need some accessories.

I‘m like, what the hell do I need accessories for, I never needed one for my Apple Watch 3. Then he explained that the Apple Watch 6 does not come with an adapter and that I need to buy one.

That is Apple in 2020 for you. Greedy ass Apple.

I really respect and enjoy the products Apple create; they are without doubt some of the best that money can buy, but boy do a detest the company. There is no other company who spends so much effort spinning their undoubted greed into some pious, sanctimonious message to their customers.

There is no doubt what they are doing could be good for the environment (in Europe, for quite a while now, many manufacturers have not been including power adapter, so nothing new), but so much of this potential good is being undone by including, quite cynically a cable that the vast majority have no use for without buying a new power adapter. Furthermore, when next year, their iPhones come with USB-C ports, this is another cable that will end up in landfill, like the billions of other lightning related products. Apple is not really doing good for the environment, if they were genuinely making the effort, they would have complied with European legislation years ago; instead they persevered with their own proprietary cables and added dongles to comply. Greed!

I would have much more respect for the company if they told it like is is and really made the effort for the environment, e.g. no accessories included, but a voucher for those who need some. Say it like it is, they couldn’t maintain the price the same as last year without cutting their costs elsewhere; those 5G radios and OLED screens cost money you know.

Instead they spin their evangelical BS, that sadly is just lapped up.

Profit maximization in the guise of environmentalism. The reduced cost because of non inclusion of charger and earpods should have been passed down to the end consumers but sadly that’s not the case here. Without any new radical innovation, doing such awkward thing to generate more revenue for the company will surely disappoint a lot of apple fans out here.

The 11 Pro had a USB-C charger and cable. And people do have piles of USB-A chargers and USB-A Lightning cables.
Yes. Piles of working USB-A chargers and broken USB-A lightning cables. These are just too flimsy. How can that be good for the environment?

Being at home during this year of ..... I have been sorting my man drawers out. I have umpteen power bricks , lightning cables old 30 pin iPod cables and over 10 head phones with jack with lightning some never even opened. Trade in shops don't take your used headphones over here. my next pair of headphones will be blue tooth anyway. We also have governments calling on manufacturers to reduce cable waste with their products. I suppose they they are damed if they do damed if they don't.
