Most iPhone owners don’t have usbc chargers. They could have waited a couple of years at least.
i have one that goes with my iPad, but of course since the new iPhone still has lightning i can't just use the same cable as my iPad. So even if people have one from their iPad's....you have to unplug and plug in a new cable each time you want to charge a different device. just ridiculous

The solution is simple. Don't buy the power adapter from Apple. There are many reputable brands that sell them. Do not reward with $19 behavior that reminds us (at least the older folks) of Microsoft in the '90.
a good thought, but it's still the principle of having to go buy another power adapter bc they didn't include one.

it's a money grab or otherwise they'd offer to add one free of charge to your cart when you buy your new phone. Don't include it automatically but make it a free option....
That would make too much sense.... I would think this would be a good compromise.. but this is just silly and people right the adapters we have unless from 11pros are all non -C and all slow, basically insuring that this will be bought... Im getting more and more angry... Save the environment by selling same stuff as used to be free.

It seems like so many people have glanced over that fact, even in this thread. We may have a drawer of the 5w adapters collecting dust, but trying to charge one of the new phones using a 5w adapter will be agony, unless you happen to only charge it overnight. Definitely not ideal if the only way to fix this problem will be to order a separate adapter with a separate carbon footprint for shipping.

Nothing environmentally friendly about that, although it's mildly better than past years when Apple was including an underpowered 5w in the box and people were still dealing with the slow charging.

Exactly right.

I’ll be coming from an iPhone 7. I will absolutely need the new adapter; I’m not going to charge an iPhone 12 Pro that’s meant to be charged with a 20W adapter with an old 5W adapter. And the old 5Ws are USB-A. Meaning, I wouldn’t be able to use the USB-C Lightning cable that comes in the box.

Like your case seems to be what Im thinking, most people upgrade cycle is not 1 year, its 2-3 years and no phones came with USB-C back then from Apple at least.... The use of USB-C is justified, but not doing anything for users to actually be able to use it when you get the phone, unless you pay 20$ to CHARGE YOUR PHONE.. I wonder if this is allowed by law, there is got to be something at least in EU laws to prevent this, how are you buying a device and cant make it work unless you buy something else, or supposedly have something previously to make it work... just mind boggling..

I'm all for this, because I have like 10 unused USB bricks laying around. Granted it is USB-C, but at $19 for a $1000 phone that's nothing.

If you really didn't want to pay that, i'd say go to a phone store and ask them to throw one in when you buy from your carrier…

When rumoured I didn’t think much of it but after the event it’s not sitting well with me.

First, if this was truly about the environment, they should not have shipped a new cord either. The USB-C cords are useless or waste for those that will be using their old chargers - responses in this thread indicate these are majority of users.

Second, it’s absurd that we have to spend extra to unlock a hardware feature that’s already built into the phone itself.

We're closer to this being required by law than disallowed... with the EU leading that change. The iPhone is far from the first device to ship without a USB charging brick. We simply don't need 1 charging brick for every USB device we own.

This isn't even a new concept. Electronics used to be shipped "batteries not included". Get with the times.

to me, the other thing that is annoying to me is apple not making the iPhone with USB C....then i honestly wouldn't care if it didn't come with a block, i can use my iPad one. But now, you don't include it and then the phone doesn't have usb-c so you have to use a specific cable and now it makes things so annoying just to charge my phone. even if i want to go with mag safe....that doesn't come with a block either. so ridiculous.

And for those not tech savvy people, they head to the store to pick up the phone and then head back home.
Found the cord not compatible to anything they had from 2 years ago.
Drive right back to the store to pay $19 for the charger, using a vehicle that is very likely powered by fossil fuel in one way or the other.

Yup, for the environment. 🤔

LOL so true. or my annoyance of apple not putting usb-c in the iphone. then i honestly wouldn't care about the no block....but they even take it a step further to not put it in the phone but give you a special cable. so for me to charge my new shiny iphone. i have to reach back behind my nightstand and unplug the cable from my ipad block to charge. when i wanna charge my ipad, i do the same thing. makes zero sense.

Next year Apple will put the USB C port on the iPhones, they will bring back the adapter due to popular demand but they will exclude the wire because they need to save the environment

Im sorry what phone was that ? Batteries were not built in.... and clearly stated that not included ALWAYS(actually I think by law), also there was a good reason for this, and besides the money fact... Here is a completely diffrent situation...

I doubt there is. Phones have been sold without a power adapter in the EU before. Apple did not innovate this move. What thy did different was to do this for expensive phones, not for phones in the 100 EUR price range.

Hat off to Apple though. They showed once again why they make the money they do. It's not easy to grab your customers by the balls and squeeze hard enough that tears almost appear in the corner of their eyes but not hard enough that they tell Apple to let go and move on to something else. Only pros can do this.

or since everyone just went ahead and bought new cables and new blocks, it'll be just the iphone by itself!

Next time they'll have the charger, won't make the extra trip, but the environmental benefits will still remain. There has to be a transition point somewhere, might as well be here.

On the other hand, if you want to criticize Apple for including terrible 5W USB-A chargers for years after they had USB-C chargers available, I'll be right there with you.

Hit man with his hands around Tim Cook's throat: "Don't look so upset. You'll no longer be producing methane gas and consuming oxygen and other resources. This will be good for the environment!"

(For those that are unsure, this is a joke.)
