And for those not tech savvy people, they head to the store to pick up the phone and then head back home.
Found the cord not compatible to anything they had from 2 years ago.
Drive right back to the store to pay $19 for the charger, using a vehicle that is very likely powered by fossil fuel in one way or the other.

Yup, for the environment. 🤔

Environment preservation is such a fake front from Apple. They are banking on this as a lot of its consumer base will be oblivious. But hey it’s only $19 more right...

I have to hand it to Apple though, they do sure know how to maximally extract $$$ from their customers.

You have a drawer full of USB-C bricks?

USB-A -> Lightning is not obsolete

Wireless chargers still need a power brick though...

:p

In my specific case, I am fortunate to have installed a USB outlet in my bedroom and have a power strip with USB hubs in my office which are both then connected to wireless charging stands.

The only Apple brick I use is for my iPad.

Next time they'll have the charger, won't make the extra trip, but the environmental benefits will still remain. There has to be a transition point somewhere, might as well be here.

On the other hand, if you want to criticize Apple for including terrible 5W USB-A chargers for years after they had USB-C chargers available, I'll be right there with you.
Still does not change the fact one bit that Apple did this not purely for the environment.

and now you`ll need to either share that USB-C brick or buy a new one or change the cable to USB-A !! YEPPY but most people already hav..

Motorola did it with a cheap phone (I think it was the E). I know because I bought one a few years ago.

I would be interested to see that, I bought a cheap 50$ Moto E for my gramps and it had an adapter with it... USB-C at that....

I can def see it for cheaper off, or to off set cost to back to consumer, or even tell provide voucher or during check out something... but just like this, IDK ....

Also, what will Apple do or say if a 3rd party charging adapter bricks your phone(which happens) or damages your battery ? They cant tell you to use supplied adapter, or force you to only buy apple adapter ? What will happen with this ? So interesting that they are doing this, I mean its apple, I would figure they cover bases, but so weird...

Im sorry what phone was that ? Batteries were not built in.... and clearly stated that not included ALWAYS(actually I think by law), also there was a good reason for this, and besides the money fact... Here is a completely diffrent situation...

Completely different, as in the device won't work without an additional purchase? Oh wait, that's the same. Apple clearly states what's in the the box too. But again, this isn't the first USB device to exclude the charger, and the EU explicitly wants a ubiquitous USB-C charging solution so that chargers are interoperable and not required with every electronic device purchased.

Looking around myself, my Anker 21000 mAh battery didn't come with a charger, nor did my usb powered camping lights, my garmin gps, my wireless computer headset, or my 360 cameras. Come to think of it, I once bought a refurbished iPhone 7 from a third party seller, and that didn't come with a charger either. So once again, I say get with the times. The reality you fear for whatever reason has been here for a long time. It's simply not uncommon for USB devices to ship without chargers.

I haven't used the enclosed power brick or ear pods since the 6+... I literally threw away 8-10 bricks from iPads and iPhones the other day... I used to give the headphones to my students... they don't want them anymore... When I got my late 2018 15" MBP, I ended up getting 2 USB-C to lightning cables. In my work bag, I've got a multi charger block with folding prongs with 3 USB and 2 USB C ports, and another one in my luggage.

I get the frustration with not getting those things anymore... It was the same frustration when Apple dropped the floppy drive, then the DVD drive then the headphone jack... And low and behold, they're still in business and how many companies have followed their lead?

Doesn't matter and I don't care if profit motivated Apple. I care that it actually is good for the environment and that I'm free to buy the chargers I prefer to use without also having a pile of wasted chargers in a drawer.

Never did a trade-in, but if I do ... will they ding me $19/$29 for not including the charger that came with my 11 Pro Max 512? Or do trade-ins not require cable/box/charger?

You cared enough to quote me, when I am complaining Apple being greedy. 🤔

Again missing the point.... Not sure about EU phones, but I cant find one that did, but of course not looking hard... the devices you listed are accessories, presumed to be used with something else.... if the saving were passed on to consumer then yes, but they did not, actually prices went up on none pro models... and those none pro models targeted at general population that will probably not have spare USB-C adapter at least from what Im seeing good 60-75% of them... I get what you saying and you are right, but the way they did it is wrong, for them at least for apple premium devices...

Honestly, I wouldn't pay for one if I opted to buy a new iPhone...I would make them give me one for free. Seriously, this is ridiculous.
OK, here's the deal. I'll give you 10 bucks for the UBC-C to Lightning cable that comes with the new phones and you can use one of your old block USB chargers with the standard USB to Lightning cable that you're presently using.

As I've said before - gyms, hotels, airports, airplanes and cars use USB-A for the other end. It has taken them many years to even get to that and I would expect that it will be years before they convert to USB-C ends for power and data. So at the moment if you want to use the USB-C included cable (as in the 11-Pro) you will need to have a converter cable to go from one to the other. And you will have to buy several USB-C power blocks. On my 11 pro that came with the USB-C end and USB-C brick I have never taken the power supply out of the box.
I know this is the future but don't claim your making use of all the bricks people already have - if people convert they will just throw their old stuff in the trash and then realize they need the old cables some times.

I do not care for the power brick, I have a drawer full of them collecting dust. Everything is moving towards wireless charging anyway.
It would be interesting to find out how many have really gone to wireless. And of those how many still keep all the other stuff and sometimes use it

Well, as long as they drop the price of the new phone by the equivalent of how much they will charge me for a charger I am OK with it. Problem is that the BS of saving the planet will go to their pockets. That is what I don’t like.

I wouldn't be so sure that "it actually is good for the environment" applies. So I might be able to keep my current charger that came with the 11, but if I need one, Apple suddenly needs to make a box for it, put it in an envelope, and of course ship it ... or I'd have to drive to pick it up - now all the same if I sell my 11 to someone who doesn't have a 18/20W charger they need to get one as well by whatever means ... or do we now apply those "carbon credits" here too and call it better for the environment?
