You cared enough to quote me, when I am complaining Apple being greedy. 🤔

I made it pretty clear I care about the environmental outcome, and my first response to you involved an argument you made about the environmental impact of someone making a return trip to the store, which was a one-time strawman in the face of systematic change. So once again, I don't care if profit motivated this change, I care that the change has a good environmental outcome. I wouldn't have replied to you if you didn't suggest that it was bad for the environment (when it isn't). Feel free to go back to complaining about a corporation being a corporation now. I'll leave you alone.

Really?? Not a single iPhone came with USB-C. What makes Apple think that customers would have a USB-C Power Adapter?? If I'm only an iPhone user... then I would have never had a device that would include a USB-C Power Adapater
MY iPhone 11 pro came with that charger. And it broke. Hate this.

People don’t get it. I couldn’t care less if Apple removes the charger from the box. What I care is that they came out with this BS of saving the planet but will still charge me the same price for the phone that used to come with a charger. So, on today’s announcement one of the things Apple was very proud was that they are bringing iPhone 12 for the same price that the 11 used to be. That is a lie. If I want to compare “apples to apples” the new phone costa $19 more. Thus, Apple should just be transparent and say that for them to deliver their sustainability goals customers will have to pay $19 more. Very simple.

Very odd timing from Apple - as noted again and again in this thread, a lot of Apple customers will not have any USB-C chargers (the average iPhone purchaser probably doesn't have an iPad Pro or iPhone 11 Pro). There was no real reason for Apple not to move to USB-C back in 2017 with the iPhone 8/X (just after all the MacBooks moved to USB-C) and that way everyone would have a drawer full of USB-C adaptors (albeit 5 W ones).

Also, offering people a free charger or a voucher for a free charger wouldn't help as most people would opt in purely because it was free. Perhaps a better approach would be to offer the charger for $9 if you trade in an older USB-A charger for recycling - this way people get a nice USB-C charger at a cheap price (that can charge at full 20 W) and a load of old chargers get recycled rather than ending up in landfill. As noted earlier in the thread it is sadly ironic that this change will cause a lot of USB-A chargers will get chucked in the bin.

Next year, I'm fully expecting Apple to remove the port and go completely wireless as per the rumours from a year or so ago.

So the irony is - your USB A chargers are plentiful and Apple doesn't see a need to include one in the box, but we'll obsolete them by shipping you a cable that requires a USB C charger.

I'm OK if they do that, but don't say it's to save the environment. The environment will soon swallow those 2 billion, now obsolete, USB A chargers.

its quite simple. every apple customer has like 10 chargers and lightning to A cables. but now more and more usb-c stuff comes. so i find it quite elegant, to put in a usb-c cable instead of yet another usb-a.

Exactly, wtf Apple? Had iPhones for years And iPads. None have a single usb c power brick. What a money grab
[automerge]1602618551[/automerge]

So? That’s not “most people”

so tell me. how many usb-a chargers and cables do you have? do you need another one from apple?

Good thing I bought an Apple 30w USB- C for $17.75 on Ebay a few months ago.
Best Buy had some deals for $19.99 for Apple's 18W last year ... I snagged a few, but they're all gone now. Between friends and fam coming over and wanting to charge they somehow fell into the void. I never had a drawer "full of chargers" ... when I gave my previous phones to fam they usually went with chargers/cables/headphones. $19 for the new 20W is nice, but I still wish one was included in the box.

It’s mine blowing honestly how you don’t care. Lol. It’s the idea is it. Apple constantly takes takes takes.
Not really so much “take” per se. They offer a product that people want to buy. If you think it’s a good deal, you take them up on the deal and exchange currency for the product. I don’t believe Apple is actively taking anything from anyone without providing something in return.
If the chargers are plentiful, then so should the USB-A to Lightning cables be since iPhones and iPads all included one of those, too. :)
Quite few.... but not a lot compared to iPhone numbers.... So regular scenario anyone who just had a none 11ProMax / Mac/book user would need this adapter unless they have a 3rd party one... so thats normal then ? LOL
There are vast numbers of lightning chargers out there. They aren’t and don’t have to be USB-C. Anyone who wants to buy a charger just because they got a free cable even though they’ve GOT chargers is just someone that likes spending money, I guess?
Does it save the environment? Who knows
Well, if you consider that they are GOING to sell more than 50 million, the fewer flights to deliver those 50 million i-devices, the better. I mean if you’re a person that cares about the environment. Most people don’t.
And each charger, plug, etc will be sold in more cardboard and plastic packages 🤬
And those packages are eminently recyclable. However, the BEST any company can do is produce items that recycle easily. In the hands of a consumer that doesn’t WANT to recycle, it’s going to end up in a landfill or as trash somewhere. Most folks don’t care about the environment. BUT, those that do will put those easily recyclable cardboard (no plastic anymore) bits in their recycling bin.
Its always confusing to me, do you have to use a USB C to Lighting to get the fastest charge speed? Can you use a USB-A to lighting cable ?
You do, but the 12W adapters work well in a pinch. It’s noticeably speedier than the original 5W.
The solution is simple. Don't buy the power adapter from Apple. There are many reputable brands that sell them. Do not reward with $19 behavior that reminds us (at least the older folks) of Microsoft in the '90s.
Yes, but then you remove the part about Apple FORCING folks to buy a charger. And that’s no fun at all!
And for those not tech savvy people, they head to the store to pick up the phone and then head back home.
Will many stores allow their employees to pass up a potentially EASY sale like that, though? :) I mean, if someone can sneak into a store, into the secure area, and get out of the store without talking to a cashier, then, yes, they may pick up the phone and head back home. For anyone else, they, along with everyone else, unfortunately, are going to be bugged about “Did you get an iPhone? You know they don’t come with adapters now, need an adapter?”

"All of the new ‌iPhone 12‌ models and older ‌iPhone‌ models ship only with a USB-C to Lightning cable, with customers expected to provide their own power adapters. Most people likely have several USB-C power adapters on hand from past device purchases..."

Who is 'most' people?
Many people still use the Older iPhones with a USB A port and may not own any other Apple devices esp. newer ones that use the USB C cable.
Typical Apple, force people to buy replacement accessories whenever it sells its newer stuff.

Or you can think of it as the iPhone costing $19 less than it otherwise would.

There’s always two sides to every coin.

Again missing the point.... Not sure about EU phones, but I cant find one that did, but of course not looking hard... the devices you listed are accessories, presumed to be used with something else.... if the saving were passed on to consumer then yes, but they did not, actually prices went up on none pro models... and those none pro models targeted at general population that will probably not have spare USB-C adapter at least from what Im seeing good 60-75% of them... I get what you saying and you are right, but the way they did it is wrong, for them at least for apple premium devices...

What is my GPS supposed to be used with? It can pair with a phone, but it's a standalone device, works perfectly fine without it. My refurbished iPhone was... a phone...

Your price argument is a red herring btw. The 5nm A14 processor could have cost Apple more than the charger they deleted. Neither you nor I have any idea of how much everything in the iPhone 12 box cost Apple vs everything in the iPhone 11 box. You can't tout the price increase as proof of (additional) price gouging. As I said elsewhere though, I care about the environmental impact not the motivation for the change. Their profit motivation doesn't influence my position. If you find the price too high, just don't buy, that's actually the best environmental impact anyway.

If you are looking for and need a charger, but don't want to give Apple more money, I'd recommend checking out Anker, Aukey or RAVpower. They make better chargers anyway.

It encourages people to buy third party cheap unsafe chargers. Bad move by Apple. £800 for a phone only expensive. I can imagine older people buying it expecting to plug it in to charge upon buying to find there is no charger. Crazy.

It’s disappointing. Apple is going to save billions.

“Environment” my a—.

The environment will certainly be happy to hear that instead of 100 million in the landfill it will only deal with 50 million. Numbers freely invented but you get the idea. A fraction will buy this extra.

Mind boggling at how many people will go nuts over $19 when purchasing a $700-1500 phone... especially since most of us here have an abundance of power adapters (which is the whole idea... less e-waste).

It’s Macrumors. We all know better than Apple and love to complain about irrelevant first world stuff. :)

Well, as long as they drop the price of the new phone by the equivalent of how much they will charge me for a charger I am OK with it. Problem is that the BS of saving the planet will go to their pockets. That is what I don’t like.

Buy this instead: https://us.anker.com/pages/uai2020 There, Apple doesn't get any extra money from you (and you get a better charger).

I'm impressed you know how much the iPhone 12 cost Apple to build vs the iPhone 11 though... Apple's margins on the 12 could be more or less than the 11; we simply don't know at this point. Shipping cost are definitely lower for the 12; that might be Apple's biggest benefit, which happens to be good for the environment. I would agree that Apple definitely "cares" more about the environment when it aligns with their business interests. I personally don't let my feelings about marketing BS get in the way of positive environmental change. They just need to be pressured into making change when it doesn't benefit them as well.

We must have ~20 of those square 5W chargers, that all go unused, because they are woefully underpowered for charging any supported iPhone or iPad.
