Not a bad price for an Apple-designed product with supervised manufacturing. And with loads of regulatory safety approvals. I'll buy that charger before any others.
Same - I went cheap last time I needed charger. I will be buying one of the Apple ones with my new iPhone as i don't have any usb-c bricks. Would rather buy once, properly, than potentially experience the hassles I had with the cheap one again.

For clarity (and honesty), I feel like there should be a disclaimer when articles say "most people already have adapters" because most people, I assure you, don't have the 20W or above variants. They most likely have the older 3-5W adapters, which will take a lot longer to charge the newer phones or to take advantage of the quick charging feature.

Apple even markets the iPhone 12 models as being able to be charged 50% in 30 minutes, if you're using a 20W adapter. And they make sure to put a little * after it.
Equally a lot of folk sold on their adapters on Craigslist or eBay. Some places up here in OR also only gave best trade in prices if original peripherals were included.

MR really needs to stop acting as Apple’s cheerleader and report thefacts dispassionately.

Exactly, wtf Apple? Had iPhones for years And iPads. None have a single usb c power brick. What a money grab
[automerge]1602618551[/automerge]

So? That’s not “most people”
Then you clearly haven’t bought a new product in a few years. iPad Pros and the 11 Pros had the USB C/USB C to Lightning

Mind boggling at how many people will go nuts over $19 when purchasing a $700-1500 phone... especially since most of us here have an abundance of power adapters (which is the whole idea... less e-waste).
that's the EXACT reason why many of us are....

by default, don't include it, but give an option to include it free if you need one. but to pay $700-$1,500 then charge another $19 is ridiculous. if it were really about the environment they'd do what i suggested.

Every human on Earth who owns or has owned a smartphone or any other rechargeable device manufactured in the past 10 years has a USB port that can be used to charge a new iPhone. As does anyone who owns a computer or car.

End of story.

It’s almost like USB doesn’t have different ports, adapters don’t provide different wattage, or new iPhones don’t come with different charging features after 10 years.

Not including a charger is going to create MORE environmental damage. Most people will probably need to buy a USB-C charger so that means MORE packaging and MORE shipping.
The Reality Distortion Field is alive & well at the big 

Or, only people that need it will buy it which means they don’t need to produce as much seeing as they won’t be including one in each phone unit... they’ll gauge demand and adjust production lines accordingly.

MOST people don't have an abundance of USB-C power adapters. A lot of people don't have any.
Also, it is nuts that a $700 & up phone, from a trillion-dollar company, doesn't come with a charger. Just sayin'.

iPhone/ Mac/ iPad user here since 3G. Not because the devices are so "magic" but because the competition does such a lacklustre job.
A few points:
1. reducing e-waste. FALSE pretence. If Apple wanted to reduce e-waste they would have adhered long time ago to a standard connector, and having failed to do that with usb-b surely they could have implemented usb-c in all their devices. Likewise their chargers were always underpowered and overpriced. On the bonus note, after batterygate, using a "non-approved" charger may very well result in poor battery lifespan or whatever else they decide to "enhance" the user experience.

1a. removing the EarPods and introducing AirPods will produce even more waste, just imagine the complex manufacturing and rare materials going in the batteries and electronics, most ending in the garbage as they quickly degrade in 2-3 years or on the subway tracks…

2. reducing cost. FALSE. it is spelled reducing PROFIT. which is a big NO NO in Apple world; well within their right of course but please stop believing all the BS reasonings being fed to you by the shovel.

So, they are not reducing waste! They are adamant at maintaining profits high. One charging standard and cable would have reduced waste.
Now more people will buy 3rd party chargers that are produced with less efficiency and more waste, then they will find out that the chargers don’t work well, or they breakdown and will reach the landfill as well.

How are the hundred of millions of 5W (packed until recently) chargers still reasonably useful in 2020 to charge a new generation iPhone?

would love to know what your source of information is on who owns what. but even if true, they may not today, they will tomorrow. Buy it and embrace the future. once.

And there is a reason they are a trillion dollar company. Smart businesses do not give away things.

Mind boggling at how the wealthiest company in the world has the nerve of charging 20$ on top of a 1.500$ phone and still some people pretend it’s not the money grab it really is.

Offer a 20$ discount if you don’t want the charger if you are really worried about e waste, instead of removing the option altogether and pocketing the difference.

They care about the environment, but not enough to stop releasing barely improved phones every 12 months.

While I am a MacOS die hard, I have been away from iOS for a while. And I'm a van of the new./old square edges. I was tempted to come back with iOS14 - however, my biggest gripe with these phones is:

Why still have a lightening connection? I have an iPad Pro, Macbook - all of which, including my headphones (Sony) charge from one cable. All I need to take anywhere is my macbook charger and I can charge any of my devices.

I'm not fussed about buying the brick (even though I understand the comments). At this point, I don't want to have a special cable just to charge my phone.

If the new iPhone was USB C I would have jumped on it right away. I know this may seem small, but it would drastically by annoying to have to rely on the one cable. I've heavily invested in USBC thanks to the Macbook/Ipad and Pixel phone I've been on.
so they can have a new additional feature to attract you to next year. that's how apple works ;)

About as useful as firewire cables, or the original 30 pin connector on the iPods. Or wooden wheels. I could go on and on. Technology moves forward. Feel free to complain but it won't stop the tide. Would it have been better if they made they change in 2019 or 2021? What makes 2020 so special that no changes should be allowed? (rhetorical question, I know 2020 sucked).

20W is a weird number, I wonder what the specs are. Usually chargers are 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, etc @ 2-3 A so coming up with 20W is bit odd. Maybe 9V @ 2.2 A?

It's not the first 20W USB PD charger. I don't see how 9V @ 2.22 A would be weird.

The consumer friendly option would've been able to include said 20 watt charger as a free optional add on during checkout when buying your new $1099 iPhone. That way the eco peeps can not click on the circle and feel good about themselves....

Seriously....

magsafe 15W charging, cool I was finallythinking QI charging will it too... No! 7.5 Watts

MagSafe pad is 45$ no power supply so add extra 20$ and separate box, separate delivery truck...

where is the environmental saving ?? None but basically you pay your iPhone more and you think it’s good for the environment ??

Ok send me your holidays savings, so you won’t take a plane to pollute the planet and I promise I will use your money in the most ecological way possible

Really?? Not a single iPhone came with USB-C.
Not 100% true. iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max came with the 18W USB-C power adapter for 13 months (2019-2020).
What makes Apple think that customers would have a USB-C Power Adapter?? If I'm only an iPhone user... then I would have never had a device that would include a USB-C Power Adapater
All iPad Pros for the last 24 months have also shipped with the 18W adapter. All Mac notebooks had iPhone-compatible USB-C power adapters since 2016. And in the end, if you don’t have one you can still buy one, once, and it will last several years.
Not even a voucher if you actually need one? Guess they have to squeeze that extra $19.

One more reason to go with the Pixel 5.
A voucher would make complete sense and be a great goodwill gesture. Like you said with Google, and like Sony is doing with PS5 and VR adapters. I have to say though any iPhone 11 or the phones announced today are still much better than the Pixel 5.
I missed the $30 for unlock. Thats new? Oh my goodness. Why do I continue to let myself be abused like this?
That would be your carrier and regulators abusing you, not necessarily Apple.
* Price includes a $30 AT&T or Verizon discount. Requires activation with carrier. That’s their fine print. They are actually USD$729 and USD$829 for iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 respectively. No asterisk in Pro pricing. In other countries you just buy the phone, and Apple seems happy to just sell it.

Edit: Here’s a real tip for anyone upset: Get the better of Apple and the best for the environment by continuing to use (your existing) 5W power adapters and USB-A to Lighting cables. You will reduce waste by not buying additional accessories; you will increase your efficiency by not using wasteful inductive power; you will have a spare USB-C to Lighting cable for the future; you will get improved long-term battery health by using the slowest and lowest-heat charging method; and therefore go further without needing to replace your battery.
