You guys had contactless payments in Canada years ago. That really just started becoming an option in the U.S. within the last few years; and it hasn’t really caught on with a lot of retailers yet. We’re about 10 years behind you in terms of the infrastructure for contactless payments.

I had no idea! I'm actually surprised to learn this.

Well, if I go for a run and don't take my wallet, I am definitely going to stop by 7-11 more often to "reward" myself with a gigantic slushy now...

You know, being able to buy something from Sleven w/ my Apple Watch on a run is quite appealing. I can now avoid taking a few bucks cash with me, which inevitably gets sweaty and wet heheh.

To celebrate I’m gonna buy 10 slurpees with my Apple Pay attached iPhoneX on iPhone event day
Never underestimate the power of a Slurpee or an Icee. Many people that labour in the hot Florida sun line up at these machines. I can't think of a better way to lower my core body temperature and get brain freeze too!

The Apple Pay rollout is an example of how hard it is to navigate the retail payment landscape in the US. Most of the time Apple isn't really dealing with the merchant, they're dealing with the merchant's payment processor...and with all the card issuers.

Some stores magically accept apple pay because their payment processor sent them a new terminal; that happened to a banh mi place near me. Some require a revamp of their infrastructure.

I'm sure Apple didn't anticipate how hard this was. It would be a fascinating case study to read.

I make buying decisions based on tap, thats why I avoid Walmart. I hate spending 20 minutes in a line waiting for everyone to take 5 mins to pay each
[doublepost=1536619510][/doublepost]So... they accept tap.
You should visit walmart someday. You'd learn that the lines are there not because of the time required to pay by cards but because people buy a lot of stuff. Paying by phone would not make any difference. In fact, in most places where cards are accepted nowadays one can slide the card while the clerk is scanning the purchases. You are either totally misinformed (do you even shop anywhere but Apple Store?) or you are trolling.

Walmart is trying to capture the value in a card transaction, that’s why it made its own bastard orphan system.

Walmart handles its own processing, and with AP they'd have to pay someone else...which they'd rather not do. That's fine, it's always a balance between cost and convenience.

I’m going to make it a point if I need a convenience store to use the 7-Eleven whenever I can and use Apple Pay moving forward.

Hope it’s as widely used / accepted as Samsung Pay someday.

Walmart, fry’s Marketplace need to jump on board.

Too bad Apple can't figure out a way to create a bridge for payments for companies like Walmart. That way you could use Apple Pay at any retailer.

That would mean allowing the stores to see all your purchasing activity despite you wanting it to be totally anonymous. I’d prefer privacy.

Isn't Walmart basically "the" store in many rural areas? We may be waiting a while.

The store? It’s practically the County Seat.

In that scenario, then no probably not. But when I pull up and right across the street is someone that takes Apple Pay vs someone that doesn’t? I’m going across the street.
Two minute walk to save two seconds (if that) on payment processing? All for what? To experience that warm feeling of knowing that Apple is going to get a small fee?

So you would rather go to a place which offers the same product, is 10 miles further down the road, but it offers Apple Pay?

Most people have more than one business within a 10 mile radius.

The warmer feeling of knowing WHEN that store screws up and loses data due to a breach I have lost nothing.

I thought the US were advanced in that kind of stuff. Any 711 in Japan whether in the city or in the rural area will have contactless payments, including apple pay
While technically contactless payment might be more advanced this does not make any difference in real life. I'd say if US 711 offers better product/service/value then it's more advanced.

I thought modern credit cards (with chip) offer the same level of protection (at least for all practical purposes). Besides even if card data does get stolen, you loose nothing.

And if your phone runs out of juice, do you stay hungry? Probably a better option than fast food anyways.

Well, being that I’m at work for 4-6 hours before lunch, I’m usually at ~85% at lunch time. Then after work, if I need some more food, 5-6 hours later, I’m at ~70%.

And I have a charger in my car, in case I need to add a couple points to make it ding.
