NatWest debit added (my debit is a non-contactless too.) I need to verify it though, and NatWest's Apple Pay verification phone number is claiming to have "technical issues" right now .. grrr!

I verified by SMS. No need to call. Make sure you've verified your phone number in the NatWest app.

Oh, and if you still have a non-contactless card you just have to ask NatWest for a new one. They'll replace it for free.

You misunderstand. The current NFC limit is £20. In September the limit will be £30.

With Apple Pay it will be unlimited (due to the higher security since its not just contactless with no authentication, but the terminal in the store needs an update to be able to do this. Until the update is done, those terminals will only accept up to the base limit (£20 no, £30 in September) for any NFC transaction.

NatWest have told me that the text activation option is only able to people that have "level 2 security clearance" aka a card reader on the account or you sent the activation sheet in. If you don't have that then you can only do over-the-phone activation, which should be live by 7am.

nothings showing up regarding Apple Pay in my Passbook app :/
Set your region to US if you want to add a card before 7am today.

I suppose this is a little bit of hope for me (I have a card reader)?

Hopefully MacBooks will have support for TouchID and NFC so we can use them to Apple Pay. I can easily imagine a scenario where I'm out, forgot my wallet, and my phone is back on the desk, watch fully discharged but I have my 15" MacBook Pro in the bag. It would be super convenient if I could pull out the laptop and pay for my burger and fries.
I can easily imagine a scenario where I'm admiring the grand canyon when some jerk comes up and pushes me off. It'd be super convenient if my t-shirt doubled as a parachute.

Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? Maybe someone will install NFC in your shoes in case you also forget your macbook.

I can see apple utilizing touch ID and Apple Pay on mac's for online purchasing. And in this scenario you would potentially be able to use it to purchase your burger on your macbook ahead of time (like how many iPhone apps allow you to purchase/pay on your iPhone and then go pick up). But There is no way apple will allow you to go to the cashier, open your macbook, and tap to pay... talk about an embarrassingly awkward situation

Jeez, I think that dude was joking lol
Or shall I just go the full way and take my iMac down to my local McDonalds and pay with that? :D

gotta laugh if the buying experience goes a little like ...

how many times will you need to use apple pay to buy stuff?

Will the UK really **** this up and set a new world standard of incompetentemce by ruining a truly great payment experience?

is this how an apple pay shopping experience will go?

Goods are £200 sir

Please hold Touch ID, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, eh and again sir, again, one more time, no sorry again, yes another...thank you sir here is your shopping have a nice day.

The US, for better or for worse in this case, is significantly behind the rest of the world when it comes to payments. Chip and PIN have been the defacto norm in the rest of the civilized world for almost a decade, if not more in some places. Yes, that means if you want to buy dinner, or buy a train ticket, you dip your card into the machine (or a waitress brings a wireless terminal to your table) and you enter your PIN for each and every transaction. There is no signing for receipts. The rules in place for Apple Pay are a legacy of this system. I don't think even if they got rid of the low limit you would see AP w/out PIN for a bit more either in other countries either. The flip side of this equation, is that nearly all terminals in Europe are modern and have NFC readers (and people have been using them to get around the PIN rules). Unlike in the US where Apple has to maintain a list of who is accepting Apple pay, you are going to see a ton of coverage on day one in the UK.

I didn't know that if it fails to read your fingerprint (or one that hasn't been assigned to TouchID) it allows you to pay by Passcode. Entered my phone's code and came up with 'Hold Near The Reader.'

Right, it falls back on using the passcode if it fails to read your finger several times in a row.

You can also turn off TouchId for Apple Pay and always use the passcode.

And of course, some iPhones without TouchId can use Apple Pay on the Apple Watch, and the Watch itself has no TouchId, but does have a passcode when it's put on.

This is because the passcode is the critical security piece that prevents others from using the phone and/or registering their own finger. Disable the passcode, and Apple Pay is also disabled, TouchId or not.

Glad to hear that. But please Apple, release Apple Pay in Canada eventually.

Agreed! It would be great if the banks and Apple would get their acts together in Canada rather than the banks whining about not being the ones behind the technology or a "Made in Canada" solution.

I swear if RBC had their way we would still pay for everything with personal cheques.

This thread is about UK getting Apple Pay and users in the UK trying it. It's not about other countries getting it go on a different thread.

Yep, it's live.
Interestingly my iPhone reset itself (white screen of death and apple symbol) for about 5 seconds when I switch region from USA back to UK.
It's never done that before.
Now I can enter my First Direct cards in UK region setting (Debit & Visa) but I'm still getting the "Contact your card issuer for more information".
So now waiting for HSBC to go live...

Seems to be live, partially anyway. I got the prompt to add a card (still set to UK location), but when I try to add my HSBC Premier card I'm told it's not supported. Worryingly, when you click on the link to find out more. HSBC is not listed as one of the banks supporting Apple pay! Strange as they are a launch partner and their CC is used on the graphic at the front of this thread.

EDIT: On the apple UK page, HSBC is low listed as coming soon. I'm sure they were originally in the initial wave. If this is true someone has really dropped the ball at HSBC.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news for HSBC/FirstDirect card holders but it doesn't look like they've made the launch.
