used for the first time yeaterday in starbucks De Vere Flintshire with First Direct. Didn't register 1st time but I got a tick on screen. Worked second time.

Went back today worked first time, and the lady said oh were you in yesterday, my colleague mentioned you, so it does cause interest.

Tried in Tesco,Mold but they dont have contactless.

Just a query do you have to touch the screen with the watch? as I did & worried about scratching the screen! what do most people do? does it actually scan the screen or is it wireless?, and if so what is minimum distance between watch & terminal?, thanks
Totally wireless. No need to touch the screen, just hold your Watch around an inch from it.

are, okay thanks will know now, although I guess trying to avoid the watch screen not touch the terminal will get a bit of getting used to, great system though, I'm sure it will take off.

It works on NFC or Near Field Communication, a short range radio signal. So, when I say around an inch, others may find that it works just as well slightly further away. Probably no need to carry a tape measure, though. ;)

Contactless in tesco's is London only, with a couple of towns nearby. Think just Watford. Really not many at all. Hopefully their PayQwiq flops quickly and contactless will expand.

With the watch, you double tap the friends side button, no need to tap the screen or anything. It's NFC, like the iPhone. Not sure of exact minimum distance, I did it a couple inches away fine.

You don't have to touch the screen against the reader. I don't think anyone knows the distance exactly but I did it in Nero the other day and it was painless, I'd say maybe up to 3-4cm. An inch or so. If it doesn't work just hold it closer I guess? You can see the read status on most terminals.

thank you, BTW I left my iphone in the car on my visit to Starbucks & it worked fine.

just as a matter a matter of interest does apple get a small commission for each transaction?

Just used it in Ikea successfully. Just a question.. Do you have to wake up the screen? I found it didn't do anything with my thumb resting on the button but as soon as I pressed down the button it worked right away.. Did I just time it right by hitting the button when it went through?

On the Watch? Just double click the side button and your card should appear with "Ready...Hold near reader to pay". No need to wake the screen first. The "Ready..." screen stays on for 60 seconds then reverts to the watch face if no payment is made. At least, mine does.

Received the following text from First Direct today
"We can see you've tried to set up Apple Pay - if you are having problems then please try to remove and re-add your card. Or give us a call and we can help."
I haven't had the opportunity to try Apple Pay on my Watch with my FD debit card, and was wondering if FD customers were having issues with Apple Pay. Setting up my card worked flawlessly.

I've set up my FD card, but not tried it yet.

I have my First Dirst debit card all set up for apple pay, but I prefer to make purchases with my Barclaycard, which I have had since 1988. If there is no imminent sign of movement from Barclays towards Apple pay I'm afraid they have lost a customer. Come on Barclays....

I dont have the watch I meant the phone.

You don't need to wake the screen of the phone.
Just hold the phone near the reader and put your finger on the Touch ID scanner. No need to press the home button, just rest your finger on the scanner.

From the Apple Pay website:
"While checking out, simply hold the top of your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus near the contactless reader with your finger on Touch ID — there’s no need to open Passbook or even wake your display. A subtle vibration and beep let you know your payment information was successfully transmitted."

Do you need your watch to be linked to the phone or will it work with the phone out of range?

It's completely separate; used my watch in BP yesterday for my lunch and phone had Bluetooth off (so I could navigate and listen to music at the same time). Worked fine.

Plus with iOS 9, you can just double tap the home screen to go straight to Apple Pay if you want to choose a different card.

Watch is independent of the iPhone. You could leave iPhone at home and work.

Used it at Tortilla today in Victoria station (London) and it didn't like it and spat out a till receipt and which said 'declined' then the reader didn't even like when I tired my Barclays debit card (physical one). She landed up re-entering the transaction on another terminal but I was too embarrassed in case it failed so just used my Barclays contacless card and it was fine (Apple is card is Nationwide). Not sure if for some reason their contactless reader doesn't like Apple Pay or dodgy reader? 2 mins later I used it again at WHSmiths and it worked fine.

So whats up with these random fails? Is the assumption its bad readers or software issue? I've been under the impression that it works on any reader than accepts contactless payments but I'm questioning that because we are installing a cafe in our office and getting a contactless card reader and when I mentioned it to the catering company (its outsourced) they said that the merchant bank (who process the transactions, etc) need to do something if we wanted to offer Apple Pay and there may be a small fee or something?

A couple of things some members may not be aware of regarding Apple Pay: 1) Apple Pay on the Watch is totally separate from the iPhone; the same credit card has its own DAN (Device Account Number) for security reasons. Therefore, you cannot use a credit card on the iPhone to check in and the same credit card on the Watch to check out because the system will see them as different accounts. 2) You do not need cellular reception for Apple Pay to work. You can leave your iPhone at home and still be able to use Apple Pay on the Watch to purchase something. Useful to have when you go jogging, etc.

So far Apple Pay has been brilliant, it worked every single time. I only use it on my watch as it is the only device that I own that is capable. Once the spending limits are gone and even companies that are stuck in the dark ages (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's) adapt, it could be the end of fat wallets in your trousers.

I used Apple Pay on both my iPhone and Watch at the Co-Op today, which are linked to an Amex card. This shouldn't work according to http://contactless.life/retailers/
He/she has had someone post on Twitter that they've also had success. Suspect they'll be annotating/updating the table soon.

I am pathetic - making a beeline for using scanning at waitrose so I can use my watch for a small shop without having to go through the same conversation of 'I want to pay contactless, yes with my watch'...

I always use self serve anyway. I can't be bothered with some of the idiots on the till before I got Apple Pay lol.
