I sure hope they don't get rid of the mini.
Perhaps pricing it lower and adding more storage to the base model would make it more popular.
It's just such a GREAT size for kids!

4 iPad sizes............................
I LOVE options!

I know how many are saying the iphone Plus makes the iPad mini obsolete...but I still think the mini is the perfect iPad size. As big as the iPhone Plus is...the mini just makes web surfing and content creation that much easier. It's also more portable than either the 9.7" iPad pro or the 12.9" iPad pro. I can fit the mini in my cargo pants pocket. I'm grandfathered in on the original Att unlimited data plan for the iPad. After the original iPad, I just kept buying new iPad minis. It's the perfect size, at least for me. I hope Apple keeps it in the lineup. If not, I wonder if I can put my iPad mini micro sim in a new iPhone 7 plus? Hmmm?

No matter what Apple and/or tim cook says or does at this point, it won't make people on this forum applaud apple.
Even when its news about newer and re-designed stuff, people will bad mouth it.

Apple has lost macrumors no matter what, it seems ;)

New iPad versions with better design, which people long wanted = they will discontinue MacBooks, iPad upgrades are bad

New MacBook versions = Too expensive, PC has better performance, etc.. f*ck apple, they should have done it long ago

New Apple TV = Not innovating, f*ck apple

New Phone = Looks the same, so it must be a bad phone - downgrade from 6s, f*ck apple.

And so on..

When an redesigned iPhone will arrive in 2017, i bet everyone will hate on it..and most likely predict apple will discontinue the Mac in favor of iPhone 8, because it will be getting the spotlight :p

Calm down :)
Or maybe people were just waiting for Mac hardwares? ......just saying.

Doesn't even need to go edge to edge. I superimposed a 10.5 inch screen on the current iPad and I think it is doable if the camera module is modified and pushed upwards. Still leaves a 5mm bezel on the sides and abut 7.5 on top with a slightly smaller bezel at the bottom accommodating the home button without major modification.

Wow, that's while leaving the home button intact. If touch ID gets integrated into the screen than there's even more room.

There's just too many versions of iPad......way too many. It would turn some new people off because there's so many type.

A rough calculation tells me the screen area ratio is more than 2x between an iPad mini and a 6s. This sounds quite huge to me. I could do pretty much all I do on my Air on an iPad mini (reading, web browsing, email, notes, etc), but very few of these things on a large smartphone.

That's why I specifically mentioned the plus model.

The 6 plus is basically my only device right now while I'm still waiting for the iPad Pro. I do pretty much all my computing on it, but the issue as you mentioned is screen real estate. I find that it's easier to read pdf and documents on an iPad but for pretty much everything else I can do on my 6 plus.

The market for a 17" rMBP must be tiny though.

The market for the old 17" PB had gotten very small, and in the time since then, the 15" models with higher resolutions offer more screen real estate than the old 17" models.

I can't speak for everyone, but I would think that a fair number of people who may have wanted a 17" would prefer the 15" now, making that already small market even smaller.

Nope. You are delusional if you think that having a higher resolution is the same as having a physically larger screen.

I actually really like the idea of a 10.5" iPad Pro. It's the perfect size for me.
Yes, I used an original iPad for work and found it slightly too small. I thought the iPad Pro would be great, but it seems too big in person.
10.5" seems to be the Goldilocks size.

I like the idea of a 10.5'' iPad Pro. I have an iPad Air and iPad pro 12.9''. I love the Pro because of Apple pencil capabilities and use it extensively at work (never did that with the Air) but it's just too damn huge and heavy. I find the 9.7'' pro screen size a bit too small. something in between would be perfect. But none of them are going to completely replace a mac for me. I would prefer dental surgery without anesthesia to using LaTex on an iPad instead of on a Mac.

As a Mini user, I realise it's the unloved mutant step child of the iPad family, but it's great for reading books on. It's also the only iPad small enough to thumb type comfortably on. If it goes away I'll probably end up with some sort of Android tablet of a similar size.

Ok but can we agree that they should either keep a product line updated or kill it?

Disagree. For most people, the iPad is nothing more than a device for media consumption. A little Netflix, browsing and gaming, that's it. I am fine with that, I don't need an iPad to be more than that. So there's absolutely no need to pay the ridiculous premium for the Pro moniker.
Really hoped for an updated iPad Air in October. Seems like I will be waiting for another year...

And no, there's no way I would ever even consider watching a series or a movie on a 5,5" iPhone screen while being at home or somewhere, where I could use a 10" iPad. I see that the iPad mini is getting cannibalized by the iPhone Plus in some way, but surely not the bigger ones.
When I compare the 6 plus with an iPad Air 2 the difference in the size of the video is only about 10% due to the aspect ratio. A 10" iPad may be slightly larger but I think the difference is not that noticeable when you are watching videos.

Why not just make 1 stretchy iPad size made of some rare earth element and call it a day.

Also, are iPads even in demand anymore? I haven't touched the one I bought in 2010 in a good 3 years because it's just not that useful when you have an iPhone and a Mac.

Really? I haven't touched my MBP since I bought an iPad Mini with a Clamcase, and now I use an iPad Pro 9.7" with smart keyboard.

Of course I'm just a Network Security Engineer by day and College student by night. I do everything (all my assignments) on my iPad. So far I've used Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Evernote (replacing with Notes), Ulysses, Pixelmator, Graphics, Photos, and Concepts. It's nice to have them on the laptop (Concepts isn't available yet), but I have learned to do my work on my iPad. The Apple Pencil is useful too.

It's where I play games now. I have a Steel Series controller I use. So really, why are people using Laptops still in an era of a device that can do the same work (as an i5 from 2013) for 1/3 the power consumption, 1/4 the weight, and 1/2 the size, and you get to add LTE?

It is as frequently updated as the bigger ones.

It's "popular", because it's cheap.
No, it's the perfect size. You can actually hold it up with one hand while reading. I bought a 9.7" when they were first introduced but never used it because the size feels awkward. I love the mini.

I believe, Apple should:
  • Merge iPhone and iPad product lines making hardware/OS of consistent design
  • Come up with a simple rounded set of screen sizes, e.g. 4", 5", 6", 8", 10", 12". Or 5", 6", 9", 12". Metric system can also be used. For instance, 5.5" is 14 centimeters.
  • Make available the following options for devices of all sizes: cellular telephony, stylus, wireless keyboard. The iPad name could be kept for devices with no cellular telephony.
  • Change naming convention to something like "iPhone 6.17", where 6 is a screen size and 17 is the release year (2017).
This would simplify OS/app development, improve user experience and make product line less confusing.

Four iPad sizes? Can't see that happening. I agree (should Apple do so) with the fact the iPad Mini will be the model that faces the chop.

It is about time the Mac desktop/laptop saw some loving though.

For me, the mini is really the only worthwhile size for the ipad. It's perfect for reading books in bed. The 6plus phone is too small for that, and the 9.7 ipad too big, imo.

Apple should really do some housekeeping in their product lineups. They risk of nearing, if not surpassing, the generic Android OEM territory in terms of confusing.

-For the Mac, drop the Airs, and introduce the 14" MacBook alongside the 12" for the casual/mobile user. The thinned 13" and 15" retina Pros should cover most advanced users' needs, so the lineup is:
| 12" MacBook, 14" Macbook | 13" Macbook Pro, 15" Macbook Pro |

-For the iPad, keep the 8" mini, drop the 'Air' moniker for the 9.7" model, and have the Pro models as a bridging gap between the iPad and the Mac so the lineup is:
| iPad mini | iPad | iPad Pro 10", iPad Pro 12" |

-For the iPhone, drop the "Plus" moniker in favor of "Pro", and drop the ever ridiculous numbering system so the lineup is:
| iPhone SE | iPhone | iPhone Pro |

Three pro models that close in screen size makes little sense. I'm calling BS on this one.

Apple is definitely investing in the 'Pro' moniker in the iPad. This must be their way of ultimately wanting the customer to transfer from PC's/Laptops to the different models of the iPad, which offer a size/variation for everyone that Is interested.

Yea, they're making mockery of the word 'pro', but that's their prerogative. Tim Cook is doubling down on the 'ipad is a real computer' bs, and also doubling down on the watch. I hope both gambles fail miserably.

Also, are iPads even in demand anymore? I haven't touched the one I bought in 2010 in a good 3 years because it's just not that useful when you have an iPhone and a Mac.
I use my iPad all the time. At work I am stuck with a desktop workstation. When we have meetings, I use my iPad with a bluetooth keyboard to type notes constantly. I use iPad at home to read news, easier to read larger text than on a iPhone. I also use the iPad to stream videos while reading the news. My spouse does the same activities with her iPad.

The 6s plus can do those things well enough. And there's not much difference in screen size when your watching a video due to most videos being 16:9. And it's more convenient to carry around.

Having said that, the mini is a better browser and ebooks reader due to the aspect ratio.
There is a huge difference when reading ebooks, comics, or even the New York Times. The iPad mini is the perfect size for reading in bed, or reclining with a coffee and a book..Anything smaller is too small, and the larger iPads are awkward and require two hands for long periods of reading.

Ahh the iPad.. will come in three delightful flavors like their iPhone counterparts.

1) iPad - 9.7"

2) iPad Plus - 10.5"

3) iPad Pro - 13.3"
