Ssoooo Apple the hypocrite wants to totally rip off Samsung apparently, and introduce pointless gesture control for a phone...

Sad if true.. and I see the Samsung curved screen as one of the most pointless inventions for years, videos just look crap on it! If they stayed on the flat screen fine, but nnooo they have to curve the video round on the screen and make it look utterly stupid!

I for one hope Apple sticks to flat screens!

Maybe someone smarter than me can explain the value of using touchless gestures to control the phone and how that could in any way be better than just tapping/touching the phone. I honestly don't get it.

Right, because if they do it it will be exactly like Samsung.

Or maybe they'll actually make it useful and do it right, like they usually do. Hmm.

That's because today's Apple is a company devoted to their shareholders, not their customers. If you own their stock, you love them. If you want a choice of form-factor computers with current technology at an affordable price, you hate them.
It's a BINGO!

I'm just a salty Apple fan (fan from Apple's Steve era actually), not a shareholder, so, I understand your point. :)

I dont know about touchless controls. What is the benefit?

As far as your imagination. Apple's version seems to be hobbled by having to be close to the screen. For something like this to work well it needs distance freedom and precision.

Because Tim Cook is an incompetent idiot, that's why.

The most successful CEO in the world. That people are still able to type this nonsense about Cook being incompetent just amazes me. Obviously you know nothing about the business world or what it takes to be a CEO of the such a successful company. Oh well, thanks to the ignore feature, I will never read another bit of uninformed nonsense you chose to type.

Not just Samsung but also Nokia...

It's amazing how much far-off, yet very specific rumors get leaked out of Cupertino since Jobs's passing. Either Tim is not striking the appropriate level of fear of repercussions for leaking, or Apple is seeding these leaks deliberately. If the former, some high-level employees at Apple have a shocking level of disloyalty to the company they work for.

As to the leak itself, I've long wanted the ability to detect hovers. This would add so many user interaction possibilities, the least of which is rollover states for buttons. It would help immensely with discoverability of actions.

Toucheless gestures? But that makes about as much sense as 2001 Apple producing their own MP3 player; if it didn't work for others, how could Apple pull it off?! Next thing you know, they'll make a failing tablet!

hmm finger print didnt work for others but apple proved them different
face scanning didnt work well with others but apple proved them different
smartphones were a thing before apple jumped in and changed the world
there are many other things that apple didnt do first but were able to mainstream them

Apple should be a “hypocrite” and rip off what it wants. Samsung sure has “ripped off” enough from Apple over the years.

Doesn't everyone's iPhone already do that once in a while. I swear there are times I don't touch the screen and the phone reacts.

Either way, I am cool with some sort of Kinect like logic on my phone.

Sorry to "trigger" you. But you helped make my point even more. I was referring to Tim Cook's fixation on animojis and other gimmicks likely to be used by Gen Z teenagers and mostly girls.

Teenage girls. The most influential group in American culture; they have the most impact on the English language.

Here we go again... more rumors... more Apple and Tim Cook hatred these people don’t know anything until we see some prototypes and that’s still 24 months away apparently... REST PEOPLE

Toucheless gestures have been present since the galaxy s4 in 2013. Nothing innovative.
Please tell me of a phone where it actually works flawlessly

Exactly! These people want something futuristic like this, but the catch is, they only want to pay less than $500 for it...because you know, Apple has BILLIONS of dollars. A lot of this stuff seems like a good idea (and they probably have working prototypes), but its just not realistic right now as it would be TOO costly.

Sure...but projected phone on hand or arm....no sure I would want that.

And newsflash the iPhone X screen is already curved upward at The top and bottom... so... the wording here is ridiculous

What if the phones themselves wouldn't have a screen that big, but a concave glass that would expand the display to look as big as the phone while there is a small micro LED display powering it up beneath. At that point, these touch less gestures would be needed because even when you do touch the screen, it wouldn't mean touch-screen the way it means today.

Think about it. Too futuristic... I know. I've always fantasized the phone to be a simple glass brick that is almost see through. I know that's impossible. But given how expensive MicroLED they claim to be, may be this way they could get it to work on phones with a smaller footprint of the actual display panel and use curved glass display to create an illusion of a full screen display.

An early in the day Tech Fiction :D

Sorry, I’m sure I won’t be the only one to mention this, but Samsung has already done this.

Samsung did what? Looked for ways to differentiate its flagship product? Or are you referring to the line *you* quoted that says the curve would bring the top and bottom of the display closer to your fingers? Samsung does not have a flagship device that does that.

How can you compare a notch that cuts the screen in the middle to a TV logo that's small and stays on the bottom and doesn't interfere with the screen content?
[doublepost=1522860593][/doublepost]
Right. But watching movies is the same thing.

So... don’t watch it zoomed in?

I recommend Apple focus on something new rather than beat a dead horse. Once they reach the maximum technology for the iPhone, they need to treat the iPhone like the Mac Mini and focus on something new like Robotics or Drones.
