No, curved screens are just pointless, they literally serve no real purpose other then looks.

"...other than looks." Really? That's not a strong argument in an Apple forum. Apple cares about looks. They care about looks more than thermals and performance. You just provided the most compelling reason to think Apple might do this.

What if the phones themselves wouldn't have a screen that big, but a concave glass that would expand the display to look as big as the phone while there is a small micro LED display powering it up beneath. At that point, these touch less gestures would be needed because even when you do touch the screen, it wouldn't mean touch-screen the way it means today.

Think about it. Too futuristic... I know. I've always fantasized the phone to be a simple glass brick that is almost see through. I know that's impossible. But given how expensive MicroLED they claim to be, may be this way they could get it to work on phones with a smaller footprint of the actual display panel and use curved glass display to create an illusion of a full screen display.

An early in the day Tech Fiction :D

Sounds like Apple is shooting to be only two years behind the competition.

Getting better!

Samsung did what? Looked for ways to differentiate its flagship product? Or are you referring to the line *you* quoted that says the curve would bring the top and bottom of the display closer to your fingers? Samsung does not have a flagship device that does that.

So... don’t watch it zoomed in?
Then what's the point of a big 5.8" edge to edge display?

They obviously out of ideas huh

I've whined, I mean, I've said it a dozen times now. Apple's grand idea of giving more to customers is by giving less and less each year. Less buttons, less upgradeability, less options for physical interaction . They're running Apple like it's a design contest based in minimalism and it's getting pretty old. Stretch and pull is great but this feels like too much push.

That sounds cool, but if you want that don't get an X. It doesn't have a 5.8" display. If has a 5.6" with two tabs. The tabs show status content in some tasks. In full screen it blacks them out and only uses the main screen area. It's a good phone, but you need to understand how to use it.

Apple is in the works on an iPhone display that curves inward "gradually from top to bottom,"

If I understand the concept correctly that would produce a phone thicker at the top and the bottom than in the middle. That could permit longer focal-length lenses in the future, which is the biggest shortcoming of the iPhone X compared to compact digital cameras, IMHO.

Still defeats the whole purpose of the screen by limiting the viewed content to a square area with two tabs on the sides.

Apple won’t do this. Someone probably got wind of Apple doing research on this technology and assumed it’ll end up in an iPhone.

I’ve tried this on my Samsung devices and in my BMW. Its a stupid idea.

So that settles it.

How can this be unnoticeable?

Put on Apple glasses and you won’t see it.

Then what do you spend $1200 on a phone for? To make calls? Or for multimedia purposes?

I got mine because It improved my productivity and therefore lets me make more money in less time. I found iOS has value android does not, and the X had best value of the iPhones I tried. For me at least the gestures, Face ID, and screen layout translate well.

Some apps just work better with the X’s layout. I also like the larger screen in the smaller body. The plus was cumbersome to use and while I tried waiting for an SE 2 the display widescreen on the X feels more natural. I’m used to 21:9 on my desktop.

Also, when I pull it out of my pocket I can tell its orientation without having to look. With the 8 I had to touch the home button to do that but that often unlocked the device and took me to the home screen. Reaching up to pull the notification bar down takes more time than with Face ID.

Makes sense. Face ID is practically a miniaturised Kinect in your phone. It already has the potential to track your gestures and facial movements. Controlling your phone via hand movements is the next logical step.

Touchless gestures, unless they are inherently 3D, are actually worse than touch gestures. It is easier to perform a touch gesture than it is to hover a certain distance away from the screen. There is a margin of error with touch gestures (because you can overdo the force to ensure you are at least touching) that hasn't existed for touches gestures...it's also more comfortable to rest your finger on the screen.

Great, then I got my phone because I enjoy watching Netflix on the go, have Spotify always with me, check out the latest videos on youtube, make calls and send messages and go on social media, and to me the Notch bothers my immersion especially with videos. So your argument "Not all of us spend $1200 on a phone to watch TV." is very subjective.

My current phone, an HTC 10, responds to NOT being touched already - and that can cause unwanted entries when texting, entering a phone number or anything else that requires input. It can also cause a spam / scam phone call to be answered when it should NOT be answered.
My iPhone 7 already does this too. Although not as “well” as it sounds like your HTC 10 does.

Because Tim Cook is an incompetent idiot, that's why.
Based on?

Based on the speculation of an unreleased product with little to no evidence actually exists or will exist?

Or based on taking Apple to a record market cap, record profits, record sales, and record unit sales?

Or based on having industry leading mobile silicon, the best selling watch in the world, or a 3D depth sensing camera module Samsung is already trying to copy?

Based on leading Apple to a record $88.3B in revenue and $20.1B in profit in 90 days in Q1 2018.

I strive to be an incompetent idiot.

OK... So I bought a phone because it does what I wanted better than the rest. You bought the same one because it doesn't do what you want. Sounds reasonable.

You completely didn't understand what I wrote right?
