Americans use conferencing on their computers all the time. We will just agree that you are wrong and let it be.

It's not about a concept.. we've actually had it. We're talking practically, widespread physical 3G enabled easy to use video phones.

That's the barrier you need to cross in your mind here to see the angle we're coming from..

lol, ok. We've actually had it too. So, believe me, I see your angle. What I'm saying is that Apple's success with other previously unpopular paradigms suggests they may succeed here. That's all.

I love how all the android users think they are the only CLUE-ed up smartphone users, well whatever floats their boat

As for the complaints.. wtf if they didn't put video chat their'd be a thread say WTF NO VIDEO CHAT.. add video chat and we get a WTF VIDEO CHAT IS SO 5 YEARS AGO....sigh.

Amazing

What a piece of engineering !

The sheer genius in the industrial design, incorporating some brand new, innovative production methods and materials never seen before, put together into an absolutely beautiful product - that's just simply amazing !

Video chat aside (yeah, yeah, I don't dig it either), but look at the resolution, the simplicity of the design, and the multitasking, battery life and better camera, and the flash we were all wanting for ... what are you all so disappointed about ?

This is indeed a truly amazing gadget that leaves all other makes far behind. They will all try and copy, but, as per recent usual, will fail - the core of the iPhone is the OS that just works - it is intuitive, user friendly, and simple enough to be used both by my 4 year old niece and my 81 year old mother - the first can find a game and play it, the latter can make a phone call and actually see what she is doing. And that is just on the 3GS, so we are all well excited about what the next one up can do.

Another really exciting thing is the open platform - as many of you say, iChat, apps to talk to Nokias and Blackberries etc. will soon emerge.

Apple has indeed done it again - given the World something that is of real value, breaks the mould, and opens new opportunities. Well done.

Yeah I get that, but what have Apple actually taken from another unpopular platform and made it really popular. iPad, maybe. AppTV - sank.

Phones were already popular, calling, text messaging etc Listening to music was always popular. Using computers - always popular..

Reliable, cross network (including video-oip) 3 way video chat would be a useful tool and has real world business application too.

Here Come The Front/Back Camera Bloopers

"well I just came out of the shower and thought I was giving the video feed from the front corner......".

If you have the time, please go to the youtube video and give it a thumbs up, some idiots on another forum are getting all of their members to thumbs down it, it's the least we could do to help Apple out.

Sorry if this is looked down upon here, but these dumbasses are really pissin me off ^.^

By that reasoning no cell phones would have succeeded. But they did because they added portability. The iphone succeeded for reasons you already know.

Sorry, but computers were not popular before the Apple II. Nor were GUIs before the Mac. Apple was, if not solely responsible, then immensely influential in both of those previously niche areas. And MP3 players were a pile of fail before the iPod.

Anyway. It's all good. We're going to start going around in circles soon. Bottom line for me is that neither of us knows and both of us have some reasons for what we think might happen.

I know one thing: I'm very happy it's coming. My wife and I are both due upgrades and we do a lot of video chat with the kids when I'm out of town for work. This will be a much easier solution than schlepping my laptop around :)

I'm happy it's coming too, but the situation of a functionality that people have and don't use it very different to the situation of getting someone to buy and try something they've never had before :)

The only downfall is that it is still tied to AT&T.

Yes, that would have been a terrific place to upgrade. Oh well.

Still, I'm migrating from a first-gen 8GB, so I will be getting a metric ****-ton of new stuff, not just iOS4 and the stuff that was announced today. :D

I love Apple and I will get iPhone 4. But to be honest this iPhone is the one that should of been released back in 2007. The majority of features on the iPhone 4 I had on my phones 6-8 years ago.

I was video calling on my mobile phone back in early 2004 and it was running over a 3G network connection, no need for wifi. Its not a revolutionary feature like this video makes out.

That is exactly what it is about. Simplicity. People just keep complaining about features man! But the iphone is what it is, and Apple will do what it has always done. It will succeed, either way.

Even if other anti-Apple forums try to flame the iPhone (as below) It wont make a difference. Because actions speak louder than words, and in the end the iPhone 4 (like its predecessor) will succeed, in blazing colors i might add.

And don't forget the possibility of Apps! Half the reason why the iPhone smacks competitors out of the water is the availability of app. A developer's conference SOLD OUT in minutes?

Think apps guys, and for the more grey-area pseudo legal fans, think jailbroken apps. **** Final Fantasy 7 ona PSX emulator no lag on my iphone PLEASE

This changes everything.

Damn, great looking phone. Despite having to swallow my vomit watching that marketing video, I'm definitely going to buy one. :D

In other news... since there was no mention of any Mac Pro / iMac / Monitor / AppleTV updates, any idea when the next possible launch day for one of these could be?

Geeez some people will never be pleased!! First we're disappointed last year from the lack of a front facing camera. Now we're bitching that it's old technology and that the software sucks. Last year we were pissed at ATT for not offering subsidized pricing to 3g owners, now that they are we're bitching about their data plans!!

Verizon this, EVO that, att this, giz that!!! God some of you people are acting like 12 yr old chicks!!! It's a freakin phone not a human being!! If you think Verizon is so great and problem free, SWITCH and post on an HTC rumor board about how ****** that phone is and how expensive Verizon is. A perfect network doesn't exist. They're all expensive!!! They all suck in their own way!!

Some of you people need to design and produce your own phone and build your own network so you can be perfect!!!!

They make it sound like video calling were a revolutionary idea they came up with, when in reality they are about 5 years behind and you cant even call people who don't have an iphone, never mind the fact that i need to be on connected to wifi...

I was just thinking that. The video isn't bad but the Facetime praise is just silly.

..."and see them, but also look into their eyes and see how they're doing."

It's called a webcam!

The difference between Apple and every other developer is that they live and more importantly make their own reality. They always do what they've done best, ignorant at times, yes, but all the same they do what they do.

Are video phone calls on the mobile a widely established feature? Yes.
Are they widely used? No.

I can think of some reasons including my own personal experiences:
1) way too expensive, bad carrier integration
2) ****** quality
3) too damn laggy on a 3g network compared to wifi (i dunno im in Aus we might be behind)

Iphone 4 will revolutionise the stale market, because people will buy the iphone 4, people can video phone call for free and in great picture quality. Carriers will eventually develop better plans for video conferencing on all phones because they see the market possibility, because Apple shows the world that its a lucrative and viable option. And i think that's why it was important that (at least at the beginning) Apple had this exclusive dealing with AT&T because a good phone is not just about WHAT it can do, it's all about it being viable, easy to attain and cheap for the consumer.

Apple lives in it own reality. If Apple succeeds (as they have been doing in the last few years) people will follow Apple. That is all.

It is not that... It just seems a few folks from the hot bed of technology of the last 30 years, England, are getting snouty and looking down on everyone else and Apple for introducing video chat the way it should be done.

Far be it from me to not bow down to all the great technological advancements that have come from Great Britain in my lifetime. Clearly those of you in England and Europe are way ahead of the curve.
