Dear Apple, go ahead and make a Macbook that blows everyone's socks off, but please make the $500 we spend extra for a Macbook Pro worth it.
Thanks,
Misunderstood by macbook fanboys,
TimeWaster

I can stand by you with this. I don't want MBP buyers to get ripped off. Upgrades across the board.

But MB won't get dedicated graphics anyways, so I guess it's all for null.

Last I checked, there was no 15.4" Macbook. Yes you pay extra for dedicated graphics, you are also paying more for a larger LCD screen with LED. The case is also slightly thinner and aluminum. MBP has an extra port that the MB doesn't have, FireWire 800. Can't forget about that ambient light sensing backlight keyboard either. :)

dude im on your side, im trying to convince the guy that i quoted

Which proves my point as to why Apple won't make the MBP any thicker than it already is.
im talking performance wise not the casing, i fact computer companies adopt laptop designs that the consumers prefer most ppl prefer solid colors, that why bondi blue disapeared, and ppl want THIN, because it's more portable.

For example the mbp is slightly thiner than the powerbook, does that mean apple down graded,NO.

The apple lisa is bigger than the current imac, does tha mean it runs better.

c-mon the 1st calulators where huge, now they can fit in your pocket. so are the old ones better?

Ahh, ok. Apologies if I sounded contradictory to your post. :)

I also just want to make sure that other folks know that it's not just dedicated graphics, you get much more, hence the Pro designation. :)

The front side bus speed bump will really only be effective with DDR3 memory, but again I think that is too expensive for a laptop.
DDR3 isn't any faster than equivalently clocked DDR2. In fact, I've heard that it may be slower.

So you are saying that if the case is redesigned and is .3 inches thicker you wouldn't see that as a downgrade? Even if it meant that the MBP could come with Core 2 Quad and ATI Mobility 3850X2?

i know you get more but i wanted to basically just tell her, what the bulk of that extra $500 was for

your not arguing me about performance and features which i highly doubt they would downgrade, your arguing me about form factor

IT'S NOT ABOUT THICK OR THIN, the size of the machine dosent ALWAYS determine how well it would run or how many feature it has or if the features are better are worse.

you assosiate performance with with size, STOP

I don't think anyone is associating performance with size at all. The issue is that of perception and personal preference. Mainly, how much weight would a formfactor downgrade carry when compared to improved technical specs. How does Apple market a thicker laptop as a good thing? Their only option is to simply not mention it, but it could still potentially generate negative press. My feeling is that for this reason Apple will do all they can to not make the machines thicker, even if it's at the expense of features.

Wasn't doing that on purpose. It was meant to be a two part question. I don't care how big it is or isn't or what it comes with. I am not looking to upgrade till Nehalem comes out anyways. I was just offering a reason why Apple wouldn't make the MBP any thicker. I really think folks here would complain about it not being as sleek. That is regardless of what ever comes in the rig.

that's not always true, must i whip out the apple lisa analogy

Oh come on, it's obvious he meant "given the same state of art". If you'd build a computer now with the size of the Lisa, it would allow for plenty of performance.

what I meant was if you tried to go back in time to when the first apple lisa came out, do you think people would belive you if you told them ther would one day be a macbook that was smaller and ran better? no, of course not

over time things got smaller because technology advances, intel shrunk the core 2 duo processor for the macbook air, things can get smaller without compromise.

i dont expect a new macbook air, bot i do want a thinner macbook pro

No, smaller devices with adequate performance can be made, but there will always be a compromise because of the heat silicon chips produce. The Macbook Air was compromised, if it was bigger the thermodynamics would be better and the CPU could be clocked higher.

The Macbook Pro will unlikely be thinner because it is competing against laptops which are thicker and don't need to compromise so much.

The current design already got major flaws because of its thin design, I dont think thinner is the way to go, the most important thing in my opinion is a better graphics card and better cooling.

Personally, I'm just ready to get a Macbook back under my fingertips! I sold mine at the end of June on eBay in anticipation for the refresh (specifically to an aluminum case). Best part was I sold it for MORE than I paid for it, thanks to the student discount up front. I had bought it the day the last refresh occurred on Feb 26. And that was only because I had purchased another Macbook on Feb 24th only to see them release the new ones two days later...so the first one went right back to Apple the day it arrived.

I can see the announcement coming on Aug 5. If not then, it'll be Aug 12th. Anytime after that Apple will lose the people buying laptops for school.

While Apple is doing well in the notebook computer business, other companies are beginning to produce some very interesting PC notebooks for surprisingly low prices.

Hope Apple can do something to keep the MB competitive in the face of some really good PC products out there for well under $1K.

I guess LED and aluminium won't be big argument with the new MacBooks.
Also, what's so positive about being thinner? Running hotter?
These Apple laptops didn't need to be thinner than an iBook G4's thickness.
