first, powerbooks... new in the system are 2 powerbooks...

15" is M9969LL/A and 1999
17" is M9970LL/A and 2499

peace out
I was hoping Powerbooks would get cheaper - oh well, as long as they make 'em better than PC notebooks once again.

if thats true, its looking like a disappointing update.

those prices say, very minimal pb update, none to the 12, if its still around after this. and no dual dual core, only on hight BTO option.

Will someone please tell me the advantage of a dual core over a two single cores. I waited for this update just for dual duals, but if they update them to single dual cores at the same speeds as the dual single cores now.....what did i wait for exactly?

but who knows i hope i'm wrong. hopefully theres a 12 or 13 widscreen pb. That is long overdue.

Cross Post from Price Rumor...

ok guys... I am mobile so this will be brief...

just returned from some recon work... and I don't have specs... but I do have prices and model numbers...

first, powerbooks... new in the system are 2 powerbooks...

15" is M9969LL/A and 1999
17" is M9970LL/A and 2499

powermacs are...

good...M9590LL/A and 1999
better... M9591LL/A and 2499

looks like the "BEST" version may not be available retail... or it hasn,t made it into inventory yet...

I know its lame without specs... but we are trying to get them later tonight when we can get to the inventory room..

peace out

I hope they are a good improvement, because I'm going to buy one. But, you're dreaming if you think they will compete or beat the PC hardware.

1% chance of that happening.

Rule #1 (Which everyone in this forum forgets every 2 months) Apple updates will ALWAYS underwhelm you. Guaranteed. Set your clock by it.

New products have tended to be exciting, innovative products. But the computer hardware updates have ALWAYS been piss poor.

And the worst part is, I'll buy one, just to avoid Windows. But I'm under no illusion that I will have a portable that will compare to PC hardware. I'm OK with that. Good component quality, good operating system, mediocre performance. It is what it is.

What's wrong with what they have now?

ah no, "half-baked" was me using the term the OP had used. That line in my reply meant I'd be very glad to get the current solution in an E39 or E60, let alone an iDrive integrated solution (which of course would be even nicer).

I think a (very) simple explanation is that one dual core proc is like two single core proc mashed into one chip.

yeah i got that but how is it better, Does it perform better, if so how, or does it just save space and use less energy??

so i am assuming doberman works at an apple retail store???

does this mean apple retail stores may actually have powerbooks tomorrow if they are released?? !!!! :D

HAHA! No, my friend.

Actually, I work for myself. I own a Real Estate Brokerage...

www.texasupgrade.com

;)

However, I DO have friends who have friends who are managers of certain retail establishments where Apple Computers are sold :)

Problem is... the stores here in Dallas do NOT have any inventory... although they are in the system. However, the inventory systems show that the California systems are already receiving product... so we are trying to get our contact to find someone in California he can trust that can leak out the specs on the box. If the systems were in my contact person's store, I'd already know what the systems were.

I know, I'm freaking DYING over here ;) hehehe

Dual Proc vs Dual Core

Think of it more like the hot chick next door vs the hot chick being your roomate.

The probability of getting lucky soars.

I think they're a bit more efficient in some tasks because some signals does not need to leave the chip in order to communicate with the other core.

BTW if Apple/IBM can't produce higher clock speeds than what todays powermac are at, that should make them put two dual-cores into the new ones... or so I hope :)

i hope so especially if this is the last Powermac g5 update. If thats true they better be dual duals across the board.

ahhhh so you live in Dallas also? i'm going to call both apple stores tomorrow ASAP if new powerbooks are announced tomorrow. if so, i will LEAVE work at that very moment to go grab a 17. however, my chance of this happening is slim i believe. most people have said apple stores usually don't receive stock for a few days, somtimes even a week or two. most likely, i will end up ordering online by refreshing the apple store 50 million times during the event tomorrow. ;)

It depends on lots of factors, what you care about performance wise, and what you want to compare...

Anyway dual core processors have two computing cores, each with their own set of registers, functional units, etc. Each core looks like a separate CPU to the operating system and each can be processing different tasks concurrently.

Dual core have an advantage in being able to share data between the cores at higher data rates and with lower latencies then is usually possible between separate processors (two single core processors, like what we have in existing power macs). This can improve system performance / efficiency.

Also costs can be lower... assuming one less chip package is involved (ie one dual core processor in a system compared to a system with two single core processors) then you have less mother board wiring, one less processor socket, etc.

If true, isn't $2499 for a 17" cheaper"?

If Apple is coming out with all of this new, great stuff, why did they do it this week? Apple knew that last week would take up all of the attention from the media, etc. and if they had better things up thier sleves they wouldn't have built up the hype for last week, it would all have been for this week, right?
Ever heard of Foreplay? ;)

At this point (after the release of the Nano, Video iPod, and new iMac) most people are just burnt out (except of course all of us reading this :p).
That's called endurance.

The reason it's half-baked on the BMW is because:

1. The iPod takes the place of a disc in the CD-changer. Quite lame.
2. You can control volume and track using the car's audio system and buttons on the steering wheel. This part is ok.
3. You cannot see the name of the track or the artist or the album. The new Mercedes SLK convertible displays all or most of this information in the instrument cluster.

Keep in mind that cars today will display Radio station data (RDS) and track name from CDs (if CD is burned using CD-Text).

BMW has good integration with Satellite Radio, showing the full complement of song titles on the iDrive screen and providing more flexible menu navigation.

With iPod, however, the integration is, as I said, half-baked.

If Apple is lowering prices, then the updates are likely squeakers at best.

My first thought as well. But hey, maybe they want to blow everyone's mind and show off a dual-core PB AND shave some bucks off. Something wild like that would probably give sales a good shot in the arm.

But I do remain skeptical...

200 dollars cheaper...hmmm

hope the updates are worthy!

I am hoping that what Apple can't make up for in technological upgrades, they will make up for ion lower prices. With the new 20" iMac they were able to do both (lots of upgrades and a price drop), so I'm hoping this isn't too much to ask for the PowerBooks.
