The current state of the os and even 15 ; Its like having a Lamborghini with training wheels

When are they going to release a true pro os for the ipad pro ?

Honestly, what kind of pro OS do you all want for the iPad Pro when even macOS doesn’t come anywhere close to taxing the 8 gb of ram on my MBA?

If people have some heavy workflow that uses way more memory like editing 8k video in Final Cut Pro, that’s in apps, not the OS. Shouldn’t the onus be on developers like Adobe to release desktop-class apps for the iPad Pro?

I have seen this comment being parroted repeatedly and I really have to ask - what kind of OS-level feature are you all looking for what would need 8gb, even 16gb of ram to run properly? In my book, that’s a sign of poor coding, not power-user.

iPad OS 15 is just iOS 15 but bigger. It’s NOT a computer. Not because it can’t be one. but because Apple can’t let it be one.

their advertising really has sucked for some years.
For me, this is how I also see it. iPadOS is just iOS for bigger screens. Now, that said, some people can definitely get done what they want/need to get done on an iPad. So for them, this is not a bad deal.

I think that this is the biggest thing that people on these kinds of tech forums need to recognize. Some other people need to calm down, this is an ad to people who don’t need 4, 4K monitors and two dedicated GPUs, just an easy to use device that can browse the web, read slack, read emails, and maybe do some light gaming.
Maybe its semantics but, if they're advertising the device as a laptop replacement then its not unreasonable for a lot of people cry foul because while its geared for simplistic or maybe even minimalistic use, advertising it as a laptop replacement overall is bad advertising.

I'm genuinely curious what parts of the video scream "they're saying this is a laptop replacement" to you.

Here are some examples of people using their ipads that I have come across.

Austin Mann uses his iPad Pro for photography work.

A (then) 16-year old girl used the iPad Pro to illustrate her first book.

Matt Birchler wrote a fairly extensive post about why he enjoys working from his iPad so much.

Finally, here’s an example of how to record and edit screencasts on an ipad.

Just some examples of how working on an ipad can be so much more fun, convenient and accessible compared to a conventional PC.
I didn't at all ask you to show examples of what an iPad CAN do. The question was, "What kind of work would someone NOT be able to do using a conventional Mac or PC, aside from drawing on the screen?"

Because you stated the iPad is for people who CAN'T get their work done on a Mac or a Windows machine. I read all your links and they all talked about video, audio and photo editing and that's done on MacBooks with even more professional software options such as Final Cut Pro X. My question also asked to omit the drawing function and you provided a link of a cartoon girl using the iPad to draw with. LOL.

People on the road using an iPad's cellular connection for internet to view a Doppler radar can be done with a MacBook tethered to an iPhone and some cellular places offer USB cellular dongles for laptops.
Even in one of those articles you posted the blogger stated that he still needs to use his older Mac for things the iPad simply cannot do.

In situations like this, it doesn't need to be said, it can be inferred. At any rate. I already know for myself that the iPad is not currently a viable replacement. So I would be looking at a MBA at a minimum.

That's very fancy talk for "I'm making it up and want to trash-talk a device I don't like just because".

Either that or the ad has well and truly missed the mark... by not dumbing things down enough for people to stop them inventing random "inferences".

I did the whole iPad Pro dance and it was truly useless. My MacBook needed repairs and I went the iPad route to try to replace my MacBook. Nothing compares to Logic Pro X. Nothing compares to Final Cut Pro X. Nothing compares to [any piece of software with even a little bit of power user features baked in]. Needless to say I returned all that stuff and used the money to pay for the MacBook repairs as well. My 7 year old MacBook does a hell of a lot more than that glorified large iPhone ever did

it is 100% a toy that maybe 5% of professionals may find some use for. But no, it’s not post-PC and cannot replace a real computer. Not with iPad os.

if you don’t think so, then it turns out the iPad is perfect for you and your needs

Everyone is complaining about Apple never doing anything significant with iPadOS yet still go out and buy a new iPad every 2-5 years.

Why fix something that needs fixing if people still buy it even though you never fix it?
This is true. I guess a small minority wanted the iPad Pros to be their laptop replacement. I am one of them. But I am not hoping for it anymore.

The non-pro iPads should be enough for anyone who just need a tablet.

I think you might have completely missed the point. I agree they are more tech savvy. As you can see if you scroll up and read my post, I said as much. I also said that they are less tolerant of BS and want cleaner solutions. Even in your examples of gaming, streaming, etc. young people are demanding and getting tools streamlined of unrelated complexity, so they can get down to actual task they want to do, like gaming, streaming, video editing, etc. Do you really know young people who want to go back to setting physical jumper switches, playing with config files, memory managers, and driver downloads just to play a game like we did in the old days?
Golly, I must have missed this then because I never have to deal with jumper switches, memory managers and config files in the last decade I have owned a PC!

I didn't say that that won't be able to operate an HDMI. They'll just be mad if you ask them to. And if you said, instead of HDMI you can just AirPlay your content to the TV, how many young people do you know that would say, "no, it is important I learn the ways of the copper wire just as my forebears did."
They'll just be mad? Citation needed.

There is a lot of nonsense, but I think it is coming from your direction.
The only nonsense here is your claims that you are pulling out of your ass without any proof or citation.

Many people do. They just aren’t cool like you.
dam right 😎 ( 🤣 )

(btw I knew a substantial amount of people did, even as I wrote that comment... otherwise the ipad keyboards wouldn't be a thing... I was just being cheeky 😜)

It's funny how much we desperately hold on to the notion of what a computer is and yet we completely forget the fact that the computers used to send the first Man to the Moon is essentially equivalent to a calculator these days.

Reality check my friends... your notion of what a computer is has been changing since the very first computer... what you think is the ultimate machine will be thought of as a cheap calculator tomorrow.

And for the most part, most people don't do much more than surf the web, email, and stream movies on their computers... for which, an iPad is completely apt.

You all are sold on computing power... a la 600 horsepower engine under the hood... when we all know we sit in traffic maybe exceeding 10 mph on a good day. That 600 horsepower is all marketing... that 10 mph hour is reality.

I mean really, what BS. A clear 'gamer guy' type setup suggesting an iPad can replace that. General office people who would not be using Macs anyway will not be able to use just an iPad. All the sheep will be along to laud it but really is a BS ad.
If you like that one, I've got some other phrases you'll really like, too: "Post-Windows" and "Post-PC"

Good ad. It gets the message across that everyone has different computing needs. And for some, an iPad is ideal.
Yet, the PCMR types have to get super defensive. Rather thin skinned, wouldn't you say? 🤣

"oh, no. I'm not thin skinned. *I'm* responding to the technical inaccuracies of the ad. 🤓"

I agree with you, when the strangeness of the song wears off, I see that is a great ad - and it builds up to something coming. What will the iPad Pro become in the near future, f.ex. when Christmas come ? I think Apple has a few more things to show about the iPad Pro.

I did. Erm... because they are showing people behind their workplace desktops, gleeing over new iPads? And slogan being "your next computer"? 😆

I get it, it's just a silly Ad.

Of the people that they showed complaining that they wanted to go out into the sun, not all of them were at work. One was definitely gaming and then a bunch were in a coffee shop, which could mean work but doesn't have to be. The first woman may have been working from home as we all were in the pandemic, but possibly just editing home photos.

The ad said that your "next" computer, if you pick an iPad, would let you go outside. This does not mean that the iPad replaces the work computer. It could mean that you add to your solutions. Work computer for inside the office, iPad for when you can work outside.

There is a scarcity mentality that a person is only every allocated one computer and they better chose the right one or they'll regret it. For the customers that Apple is targeting, this is not their reality.

Apple doesn't need to kill office computers. They just want to sell you an iPad too.

I agree it's an ad, but I like discussing marketing and advertising as fascinating subjects on their own, and Apple does things very intentionally and are worth studying. It's unfortunate that so many forum members view a new ad as a chance to just grind the same ax that they have over and over with little reference to the topic.

Well, you can't claim Apple doesn't have balls in those apples. They just told us IpadOS is WYSIWYG (to use an old computer term). Or in other words, IpadOS is working as designed and we are actually quite pleased with it- take it or leave it. Your choice of a computer- MacOS (and other poorer, weaker variants of laptops) or IpadOS.

I am still on the fence about getting the 12.9 Pro with its mini-led as Apple's current vision of a computer. At least this ad makes clear their user experience expectations/directions for IpadOS as a computer. TBD.

And I have to admit looking longingly thru the window blinds at an Ipad in bright sunlight was brilliant.

What are you trying to say here? How did apple tell us what?
