Some people arguing against are actually proving the ad is right. The iPad is another concept of computer, without the legacy mess of anarchic windows, complex file system, indirect UI, etc. while much faster and funnier to use. And each day it can do more. I love and own both approaches (Mac and iPad) for different tasks and moments, and don’t want them to merge.

iPad is the new computer? Cool!

Can we go inside? This outdoor picnic setting is kinda uncomfortable for serious work, I would prefer ergonomic chair and table. And the couple with kids few metres away, barking dogs and chirping birds might be kinda annoying while editing sounds... better be really producitve and then rather spend extra-time in the park just enjoying, right?

Back in the comfy silent office, great! Now, just let me connect this thing to a 27 inch display (or two), plug my full size keyboard I need for my work and let me install Cinema 4D and After Effects and... oh, wait. I can't.

😝

Amazing how many CPUs i designed on machines with a single 24” or smaller monitor and which could not run Cinema 4D or After Effects. Guess they weren’t “computers.”

I see a lot of people defending Apple these days on the "90% of users don't need that" argument:
1) Won't fully disagree that those 90% arent needing high end features
2) Those 90% don't buy the $2000 iPads
3) Apple is trying really hard to promote iPad (as in this video) for users that clearly can't replace their computers with it as-is
4) If you are going to target more professional users, then don't ignore their needs over and over.

And you know what? Even instrumenting the OS to find what features are or are not used is a terrible way to make judgements with iPad OS. I bet 5% of users used multi-tasking. I guarantee you it wasn't because 95% didn't want it, its because Apple made it so friggen hard to understand how to use. I bet you multi-tasking use will jump to around 20% after the next release.

iPad OS was forked from iOS because it was supposed to be diverging in capabilities. Instead, its getting iOS upgrades a year late. While Apple's hardware teams have finally gotten their act together these past two years, it appears they need to double their software teams because they aren't getting their work done. Lets not forget the days when Apple would delay MacOS for a year because they stole their MacOS developers to add features to iOS. It amazes me how often they play this shuffle resources shell game and not staff up for a 2 trillion dollar company. It doesn't take Dell six years to design a dual-xeon motherboard for example. People also act like when they make a chassis design they can't make a change for half a decade, I'm sorry, since when? Thats a VERY Apple behavior. To blame MBP performance/heat issues purely on Intel vs Apple's stubbornness to adapt and fix their designs in a normal product cycle is ridiculous. Yes, the new M1 MBPs are great..... but I'm still angry at how bad the thermals are on my MBP16, or all the terrible keyboards I went through for the several years prior. And I'm glad when I recently replaced my old iPad that I went with the iPad Air 4 because the Pro-series just isn't worth it without more functional software. And these are all things Apple has screwed the pooch on.... almost as functional as a pencil that charges sticking out the side of a device with a breakable connector or a mouse that has to be turned upside down and charged like its an actual dead mouse.

Yes a bit of a rant, but I'm tired of all the excuses people make for poor decisions Apple has made over the years. They have never designed perfect products, and we shouldn't pretend they do. I am quite glad the Apple-related influencers and Apple ecosystem news publishers have turned on iPad OS in the last week, I'm hoping that results in Apple re-evaluating priorities and decisions. Leave Craig to focus on his hair, find someone else to focus on iPad OS features.

Don't know what kind of CPUs you are talking about. But marketing a tablet as a worldwide replacement for today's work computers (while this same tablet doesn't have support for many of today's programs needed for work) is just silly. Not to mention, there's a reason workplaces look different then a bench in the park.

This ad feels myfairladyish. Like non iPad users were poor people working in coal mines or as help in laundry cellars.

Um no the ad is misleading. That’s the issue. So many people will not know the limitations of iPadOS, buy the iPad based on thinking they can replace their 10 year old laptop computer, and then be disappointed for wasting their money.
The prudent thing to do when seeing an ad is to do further research to see if the product is something that would meet a need, not blindly make a purchase without anything at all about the product past seeing the ad.

There is nothing misleading about the ad. It was made not to detail everything about the iPad. It was made to plant the relevant seed in the mind of consumers, that the iPad can be a benefit to most everyone. And for some, their main computer.

I'm older than some redwoods so I don't need the high-power computer I still like to use. Also, I don't particularly like lugging around my MacBook Pro these days, mainly because it sucks through the battery in no time.

I tried the 2020 - 12.9, but it didn't do enough, so I sent it back. I just ordered the 2021 - 12.9 for another try; based on iOS15. These are the apps and features that I use, and except for Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, they 'may' work on the iPad. If not, back it goes.
  1. VOICE DICTATION (who knows)
  2. GRAMMARLY (not sure if optimized for iPad)
  3. EVERNOTE (likely doesn't fit iPad aspect ratio)
  4. DROPBOX (web-based, so likely works)
  5. YOUTUBE Prem. (yes)
  6. Spectrum TV (likely works)
  7. MS Word - 365 (likely works)
  8. MS Edge - 365 (likely works)
  9. Outlook - 365 (yes)
  10. Acrobat Pro DC (no-go)
  11. Scanning Docs (who knows)
  12. Printing (likely works)
  13. Apple Notes (yes)
  14. ZOOM (yes)
  15. LR (maybe)
  16. Apple Numbers (likely works)
  17. Apple Photos (yes)
  18. 1Password (likely works)
Here is the link to the thread on current working / not working apps for iOS 15 that may be of help to you.

Yeah, sure, try running Mathematica or Matlab on that pseudocomputer/tablet.
I have both a mac desktop, a macbook pro and an ipad pro. The desktop is used for comfortable working. The Macbook is used for on-the-go working. The iPad is used only for hand-taking notes at classes/lectures, or to do calculations by hand (instead of on paper). For anything else, a regular mac is more comfortable/efficient.
Apple should stop pushing ipads where they don't work well (Mac replacement, mainly due to the the crippled OS). A full macOS device with touchscreen / stylus would be much more useful than iPads with iOS.

As a Disneyphile who has been all-in on iPad Pros for several years, that ad made me sooooo happy. *I* am their target demographic. ;)

As a MacRumors regular, though, I just thought wooooooooo will people on the forums hate this ad!

Apple knows their target better than most any other company on the planet. Its staggering, really. You know who they’re not targeting? The handful of those going ballistic on a super niche tech forum about what they think Apple should be doing. Post all you want in your echo chambers. While that might make you feel better, it will affect exactly zero change. You want to change something at Apple? Don’t buy what they’re selling. But you can’t, or won’t - which, btw, really waters down your rant.

I designed, for example, PowerPC x704 and AMD Opteron on such machines.

In a currently unlisted ad on YouTube, Apple is promoting the versatility, portability, and power of the M1 iPad Pro in a fun musical inspired by The Little Mermaid's "Part of Your World" soundtrack.

In the ad, which features the main character using an M1 iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard, and Apple Pencil, multiple users can be seen struggling with their old PCs indoors while hoping that they can someday use an iPad Pro instead. The lyrics and soundtrack of the ad are completely based around The Little Mermaid's "Part of Your World," but the visuals tell the majority of the story.

In one scene, an office employee using an old Windows PC can be seen looking out at a girl using an iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard in a park while singing "up where they walk, up where they run, up where they stay all day in the sun." The ad ends with all the characters singing "wish I could be, part of that world," referencing the world of using an iPad Pro.

The ad, uploaded on June 4, is currently unlisted on YouTube, meaning only those with a link will be able to watch it. It's unclear why Apple has decided not to make it public or if it plans to in the near future.

Ooh can't wait for the parody where the iPad user gets furious at being unable to do some things on the iPad and dealing with the Files app. Oh yeah.

Just seems idiot to use one for productivity when a laptop (Mac or PC) is not that much different and offers the full array of apps.

Apple should also realise that outside North America and perhaps a few select markets, the young tech savvy potential customers do not have or don't want to pay what is being asked for a fully kitted out iPad. Nor, in my experience do they want to use an iPad at all for mobile computing. I have been going to many cafes and coffee shops in Northern Europe a few times every week over the past 5 years and I think I have seen one or two iPads in use by people under 40. A huge number of MacBook Airs and a smaller number of Surface and Dell and HP devices.
A lot of Mac fans are going to keep hating on 2-in-1s and say they don't work, but they are simply ignorant. 2-in-1 PCs are fantastic (for the most part) and I will only buy a 2-in-1 now. My Chromebook also is a 2-in-1. Those iPads+keyboards+pencil are for rich and simply people with deep pockets who don't mind a gimped machine. (the iPad 8 and iPad Air 64GB are okay, but still a lot of money for a handicapped machine).

I was on a Mac a long, long time. Windows has come a long, long way.

Apple let everyone know this past week the iPad will remain a gimped product.

Good ad. It gets the message across that everyone has different computing needs. And for some, an iPad is ideal.
I don't think that was the intended message. Seemed much more like "hey, look at all these unhappy people compared to their counterparts using the iPad for the same use cases".

iPad can do lots of things a Mac can’t. Try drawing on your screen with an Apple Pencil. Or sitting in the park without wifi and connecting to the internet. Different tools with different trade-offs.

iPad is totally a computer. No debate needed.
I use a windows PC in work, social services, I don’t need to do any of that sort of computing at home.
on the iPad I do my emails, banking, shopping, video editing, photo editing, photo curating, personal notes and reminders, listen to music, watch tv shows and films, take files from a usb drive, social media and messaging, video chatting, writing essays, researching, web surfing…managing all these needs how can anyone say this isn’t a computer??? Crazy talk.
i’ve had an iPad since the first generation. On that first generation I did all my degree work for a Social work course. On that glass screen I typed over 65,000 words and never needed another ‘computer’ to get things done. Lots of people on these forums have no real idea what the vast majority of people use a computer for, and have always used computers for.
iPad is totally a computer and for most people in the world it’s the only type of computer they’ll ever need

That was terrible. What they did show on the iPad was not work. So even if they did go outside they wouldn't accomplish anything. As an ad it's a failure because it presents the iPad more as toy than a computer alternative. I suppose they spent all their money and resources on that amazing iPhone tracking ad.

While I love my 2018 Pro, an iPad is not a computer. If it were I could leave my M1 MBA at home instead of needing both when I travel for work. I was really, really hoping the M1 Pro would get MacOS so I could finally have that one device that did everything, but no, apparently that goes against Apple's business model and ironically directly contradicts this ad campaign.
macOS on an iPad!!! Please don't let the cat out of the bag. 🤓 Despite the BS that Apple leadership have been saying, this migration towards a unified OS is so blatantly obvious; it's just a matter of time. The trend appears to be more weighted towards the iOS with a quasi mac like' file structure. Yes, this is my speculation, but still.

Yeah, it's weird that some people have to hate some thing/company/person in order to feel good.

“For people who don’t need a computer, or don’t know they don’t.”

But otherwise, it’s just a dumb commercial.
