Omg? I got people that will do the calculations for me... Thats about as much as the speed in/decrease on recent Penryn revisions vs the older SR ones, so yeah, thats quite a lot...

2.5 % btw...

Any news if this fixes the Leopard dock reflection / Stacks bug?

ie. the one where the dock has no reflection and Stacks has glitches after waking from sleep.

Machine: MBP SR 2,4Ghz 4GB 256MB

Results Before:

Results After:

I am not sure what this means, however it looks significant :)

ps. Done another test after it dropped 5 points again, thn rebooted and did another test it even reached 3533 8)

In my experience Geekbench results vary widely from run to run, it's fairly useless as a reliable benchmark for detecting small changes in performance.

This iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.3 is a really bad one! To all iMac late 2007 users: DO NOT INSTALL IT! Trust me. There is no way to restore the old EFI firmware after a successful upgrade.

The following problems will appear after upgrade:

1. The fan inside the iMac will spin all the time!

2. The GUI performance in Leopard will be dropped down a lot. Even programs with simple GUIs, for example disk utility will stutter if you resize the window.

3. There appear lags when you do keyboard input or file accesses. I never seen such lags before the update.

Please, does anybody know how I can restore the 1.2 EFI on my iMac ?? The restoration CD 1.6 does not work.

Follow this link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303469
and also read this:

Important: An Intel-based Mac's hard disk must be formatted with the GUID partition scheme to apply a firmware update. Intel-based Macs are shipped this way from the factory. If you have reformatted your hard drive, you should check which scheme your hard disk is currently using before applying a firmware update. (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303609)

Note: Firmware updates requires the computer to be started from a non-RAID volume. If you are starting up from a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) subsystem, you must start up from a non-RAID storage device to apply this update.

Some USB and FireWire devices may prevent firmware updates from installing correctly. If you are having trouble installing an update try disconnecting non-essential devices and use only an Apple keyboard, mouse, and display.

I'm always excited to download updates although I am feeling a little bit of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Can anyone report on post-update Safari snappiness? ;):p

New Bootcamp problems

Has anyone else tried creating a Bootcamp partition and installing Vista after this update. I have never had problems with Bootcamp before, but after the update:

1. Vista doesn't like the bootcamp partition and forces me to format it to install
2. Errors off during the "Expanding files" step (0%) saying the files couldn't be written because the installation files were missing or corrupted.

I've tried a few times but with no success.

This is all on a Macbook Air 1.8/SSD

I'm just wondering if its advisable for people with "guid partition table" format to reformat into "guid partition scheme" just for the iMac EFI? It's a lot of hassle to reinstall OS X again, so any comments are welcome.

I'm almost entirely certain, GUID partition table IS the GUID partition scheme...

And, incidentally mine says 'table' and the firmware updated as expected via software update.

Mine says "table" too. I think you are right, GUID Partition Table is the same as GUID Partition Scheme. Since yours says "table" abnd you got the update, it rules out that the EFI update is for "GUID Partition Scheme" only. It stands to reason this iMac EFI update is solely for the SR Alu iMac, and not for pre-SR white imac like myself.

Updated last night and...

it woke from sleep after more than 10 hours almost instantly!!!!

Although I suspect it might have something to do with the auto start I have set at 8AM.

But i'll turn that off and try it tomorrow

I have updated my Macbook Pro 2.2 and it seems to have sorted out my problem with heat and the CPU going bannanas when Safari is running .....

Been using it several hours now, no problems. :)

I've been using firefox till they figure out wth is happening with safari. I think it's perian/QT/wmv related.
That doesn't bother me in the imac, but in the mb the fans ramp up to 6000rpm and the battery will come down. And my mb doesn't need the update...
Do you think it's solved?

For me, so far, yes

I use Activity Monitor a lot to monitor CPU activity and I would have had issues by now I think.

which issue? is it the external monitor not supporting full resolutions?

because i have that problem, and for the first time i really f***ing hate apple because of it. I have Macbook Pro 2.2 SR

Just downloaded the firmware updater and it says my system doesn't need the update. So some people are getting this major bug fixed while others (like me) have to keep f***ing living with it?!?!

Go to application- utility- EFI Update... You must install it
Now if you go to monitor preferences you can see only the external monitor and you can use the resolution of your external monitor....

I think Apple downclocked the intel processors by changing the speedstep settings, so there are less stability issues (that never happened to me). But the desktop performance is really poor now.

Nope. That would give significantly lower benchmark results, and my 2.4 24" iMac gives very similar results post EFI update as before.

Why Apple cannot provide me with an downgrader tool? This is really annoying.

I would suggest that your system is showing the symptoms it is because it has a fault. The solution to that isn't to revert to earlier EFI firmware, but have the system checked. Since it's a 'late 2007' iMac, you are still under warranty.

I dont seem to have this update available :confused:

(MBP 2.4ghz penryn)

Edit: Downloaded manually
Edit 2: After trying to install, MBP says that my comp does not need this update

I installed it per the instructions, and had no issues. It did take a while to go from the blue screen to the logon screen the first time, but that was it. Didn't see anything new either. Told me that my firmware was upgraded to the latest and greatest for my iMac. Same with my wireless alu kb.

Pretty simple really...and I'm a newbie.
