Great, same build as beta 5 which means they didn't fix the app crashing bug that causes apps to not open but give a black screen. I've reported this since beta 5 was released. Super annoying!

Apple sell a usb type c to lightning cable for £25 for this purpose. And the reason they didn't use Type c in iPhone 7 is because hardly anybody even knows what it is. When type c is on the cusp of being mainstream, then maybe they'll make the change.

As for the camera bump, it's not that big an issue. We've had camera bumps for 3 years now. I quite like the design choice on my 7 plus. It brings attention to the dual lens system.

I would have expected someone quoting prrices in pounds to get the dry humor of that comment...

Pretty much any camera can achieve this effect. The closer you are to the subject you are focused on, the more out of focus the background will appear. You're very close to the subject here, which is why the background is moderately out of focus.

Portrait mode in iOS 10.1 aims to make this effect more pronounced by combining the image from both cameras and running them through some special algorithms. Cameras with small sensors and wide-angled lenses like the iPhone struggle to get an effect like this, but cameras with big sensors - like a full frame DSLR - can achieve this effect with ease. Apple's aim is to be able to achieve an effect normally only achievable with a DSLR (or mirrorless camera) in a phone camera.
good info, thanks. i don't think the background was this blurry in our iPhone 6s for close up shots like this...or maybe with the new focus on "portrait" as a feature it sticks out more. that whole "creating a need for something you didn't know you'd need" thing apple is good at.

Aaaaaaaand messed up my Iphone 7 Plus... Randomly popped up, hit ok, boom, RIP my phone. Shame on me for not paying more attention, but how the hell does this keep happening?

don't understand, my iPhone 7+ has been taking what appears to be "portrait" style pictures already? sharp in focused foreground object with clearly blurry background. is it just that "portrait" is now a scrolling option in the camera app to give a name for a feature they built in already?

No, it's a new feature. The 7+ will, however, produce optical bokeh in certain circumstances, i.e., where the "telephoto" lens is used in good light with a clear foreground object. That's different from what this feature does, which is to produce a stronger bokeh effect through processing.

unedited pic from oct 15th, phone was on 10.0.2, from a meal we had out camping. clearly showing the portrait mode in effect. after seeing it we played around with headshots of the kids with the same effects (not posting pics of my kids).

Ummm... That's not portrait mode, this is portrait mode:

I think is because it updated carrier.
Interesting that a 1.8GB download would happen and a full on install just for a 70kb carrier update that normally happens when you select "about" in the settings menu. But who knows why.

Weird. iPhone 7 plus was already on the beta 5(14B72C). So there is no update available to download, since that was the GM. So that makes sense. But my iPad Pro was on the latest beta. Which was 14B72. Which was Gm also. But when I checked for a software update. It showed the official release of 10.1. So I downloaded and installed it. I wonder why it made me download the same exact build number... since I already had that build number installed
Same here on iP6s. New carrier update for 1.8gb worth of files :)

What are you talking about?

Update corrupted my iOS (I assume), and I only get the restore screen on my phone. I tried a soft reset (power and down volume) and nothing. Now I have no phone until I can get home and hook it up to my computer to restore it.

The 6s probably couldn't have done this as longer lenses (like the new one on the 7+) typically have shallower depth of field. (I don't know for sure as I can't see your EXIF data.) That's one reason why a portrait lens on a DSLR sticks out a bit. The effect you've seen is the result of hardware, distance, and light. The portrait mode in 10.1 uses both lenses and heavy processing to achieve its effect.
