Anybody know if this fixes the "iPhone won't charge while talking on the phone" issue I was having with my 3G? It's been killing me.

Never paid for an iphone again

There is a pretty easy way to have the highest level iPhone each year without paying (and you can probably even make a little money). I had the 16 GB iPhone 3G from its launch. Unfortunately I cracked its screen but when I upgraded to the 32 GB iPhone 3GS I was still able to sell the cracked 3G for ~$275. This year when I bought my 32 GB iPhone 4, I was able to sell my 3GS for ~$325. Both sold on eBay so very simple. You just gotta keep on top of it.

Very true. I bought the original iphone way back when and have NEVER paid for another one with new money. I've keep selling them. Sometimes I have even made more money than I paid for. Upgrading iphones every year has been easy and FREE! ( except for the brutal contract of course )

You're pants pocket won't activate the proximity sensor, no one's will. Unless your pants are made of peoples' ears/faces. Then you have other issues.

Your pants pocket will most certainly activate the proximity sensor, if it's on. The proximity sensor just senses objects in close proximity to the phone speaker – any object. However, the proximity sensor is only enabled during phone calls, so unless you're having someone talk to your pocket, the proximity sensor will do nothing when you put the phone in your pocket.

Also, you shouldn't be getting any screen touch events in your pocket, since there's nothing capacitive in there...at least there shouldn't be anything capacitive in your pocket.

The screen can register your leg, and capacitive screens work just fine through thin barriers, like the lining of your pocket. However, the screen will also deactivate the moment it senses more than 5 or 6 simultaneous touches, depending on the model, and not reactivate until there are no more touches being detected. This will usually prevent unintentional touches from within your pocket.

Use the lock button.

Indeed.

Or don't update ...

+1! I'm so sick of people complaining about their 3 year old phone not running the newest iOS. Technoloy moves quickly and will not support older devices forever. Either upgrade to an iPhone 4, or stop complaining.

The third option is simply not to update ... ;-)

So much for bug fixes...

Proximity sensor problem... still there.

Starting to wonder if this is a hardware design flaw. It never occurred with the first three phones. Now it won't go away.

Since I have ears and mouth installed in the standard locations, holding the phone differently is not a practical solution.

Funny that complaining got iOS 4.0 performance fixed in iOS 4.1 for the 3G. We should have shut up and stopped complaining then and purchased an iPhone 4, even though some of us may not be eligible for upgrade yet?

There's nothing wrong with pointing out that you should lock the screen before putting your phone in your pocket. That seems like common sense. As far as I can tell the proximity sensor is only used to shut the screen off when you make a phone call, my iPhone 3GS definitely doesn't turn the screen off in any other situation.

Have you considered that maybe you are touching the screen when you put your phone in your pocket, or when you take it out? Maybe the shape of the iPhone 4 makes it easier for you to do that. it could be just that the screen is more sensitive as you say though.

Locking the screen would definitely solve all your problems. Accidental presses in the pocket are nothing more than user error in my opinion.

No, I'm not pushing any buttons on it, I just get random track changes when walking around with the phone in my pocket and listening to iTunes. It never happened with any of my old phones and doesn't matter what headphones I use (I thought maybe electrical interference on the headphones was causing the issue).

Certainly if I lock the screen the problem never occurs. I have just never had to do this with any other iPhone I have owned to avoid this issue.

I have also made a phone call with the iPhone 4 after updating to 4.1 and still have it keep the screen lit for a little bit longer than usual while holding the phone up to my ear.

In any event I doubt that proximity sensor problems are 100% resolved. I guess I will have to remember to lock the screen when making phone calls too in order to avoid hanging up on my boss or clients by accident.

I have ios4.0 in my 2nd gen ipod touch, it was sooo slow..that I dint install it on my 3rd generation ipod touch.

Does anyones knows if ipod touch 3rd generation is slow with 4.0 and if so does the 4.1 improves the performance??

4.0.x on my 3rd gen touch has been very good...no notice in speed degradation from previous OS3.x.x

OMG I got 4.1 and now my T-Mobile wont work on the iPhone. How do I unlock 4.1? HURRY!

(LOL Just waiting for these threads)

I know you are kidding right? You should have realized that the 4.1 update would lock it back up. May be awhile for the unlock. Maybe downgrade your OS?

Freakin' finally! Used the good old manual update method, because iTunes refused to "see" the 4.1 update no matter what I tried. Installed successfully! :D

I am waiting for a jailbreak. I love BiteSMS too much to give it up. Especially with Bite 5.0 having custom SMS ringtones and ability to assign a specific SMS tone PER CONTACT.

OMG bitsms does that now???

WOW

I wish we could do this in the native iphone sms app.

There are people reporting it is fixed. Check post #179 in this thread.

Are you sure? It was suppose to be fixed.

Take your phone back to the apple store.

How exactly are you holding yoru phone? I've never had this issue with the 3GS or 4.

I read that this release of 4.1 is identical to the GM released last week. Since that's the case, I won't be updating from 4.0.2 because 4.1 GM made my iPhone 4 laggy for some reason. No, I'm not imagining it.

Good lord what don't you people understand about the fact that the 4.0 update made my phone unusable when it used to run just fine ?

I don't want the new features, I just want my phone to work the way it always did. There's no reason on earth it should run worse after an update unless Apple screwed up, and if they can't or won't fix their screw ups I'll be far less likely to buy their hardware in the future because it'll likely happen again with the shiny new iPhone 4 you seem so keen for us all to buy the moment it comes out

All that said, I'm not noticing much difference with 4.1 at the moment, but I've only had it on for a few minutes so far.

Huh?

Proximity sensor still works like ass. It does not shut off if I slip the phone in my pocket, etc, causing things to get inadvertently selected.

What in the world are you talking about? Slip it in your pocket? When a call is active? Hopefully this is your poor attempt at humor. Maybe you should slip it in your shorts and call yourself...on vibrate.

BTW, prox issue IS fixed.

I am noticing that my SYNC bluetooth isn't playing as nice with the iPhone anymore...it keeps disconnecting and doesn't reconnect automatically like it used to.

I just got an update for Mrs. Pacman that adds GameCenter support, but there's no new features and it doesn't show up in the GamerCenter games list.

WTF?

Hahahaha! You have "shake to shuffle" turned on!!!
