Upgraded my 3G!

The performance is not what we are expected, but better than nothing! Still slow, but better than before! At least I can use it as a phone!

My little advice to 3G users, after upgrade to 4.1, set the phone up as a new phone. If you don't want to set the phone up as a new phone, reset the phone by pressing Home + Power for 2-3 times will also make the phone run faster!

I just did the update for my 3G. There is only little, if any, improvement. Settings app still laggy, Messages takes longer to open threads than before 4.0 and, worst of all, CoPilot will crash for the first few times I try to open it (which it never did with 3.0).

Hm, there may be some improvement within the application buttons and typing. Maps also doesn't take absolutely bloody forever to do anything. But it's still too early to say if those symptoms too will reappear after some while.

I too wonder if the proximity thing is actually hardware, as I have never had a single issue with that on my 3G, even with 4.0.

Have you tried a hard reset (hold down power and home button until it shuts off)? My 3G was feeling laggy until I did one of those. It's like a whole new phone now.

Looks like they've changed the colours in Calendar: lighter and better differentiated. Quite attractive.

Try a hard phone reset. I had the problem from day one, but 4.1 fixed it. I can pull the phone a good 3/4" away from my face before the screen turns on.

But I can do this too - that's how I knew it has been improved. Yet I still activate stuff when talking. I'm thinking this must be to do with holding the phone at a certain angle across my ear.

As I say, I had the original iphone and the 3GS and this never happened once.

Still not able to download 4.1 to my Ipod Touch 3G in the UK (keeps thinking 4.0.2 is the latest..)

If I manually download the firmware from Apple, in iTunes do I select shift + check for update or shift + restore? (windows user)

I'm most looking forward to the added Bluetooth AVRCP support with this update, finally can skip tracks via the car stereo, shame this couldn't be added from the start...

Cheers

Reboot after the upgrade if you haven't already.

I THINK my proximity censor issues are fixed. There's a slight lag though from when I put the phone to my ear, and when the screen dims. Maybe a tad less than a second. So, I still expect issues to occur sometime in the future, but from my tests since upgrading to 4.1, I haven't experienced any.

Good lord what don't you people understand about the fact that the 4.0 update made my phone unusable when it used to run just fine ?

I don't want the new features, I just want my phone to work the way it always did. There's no reason on earth it should run worse after an update unless Apple screwed up, and if they can't or won't fix their screw ups I'll be far less likely to buy their hardware in the future because it'll likely happen again with the shiny new iPhone 4 you seem so keen for us all to buy the moment it comes out

All that said, I'm not noticing much difference with 4.1 at the moment, but I've only had it on for a few minutes so far.

I agree that if Apple released 4.0 for the 3G it should work. I also think that they should offer a way for 3G users to downgrade. But I also feel that anyone with a 3G should have done some research before updating, then coming to complain. There is tons of threads about the same thing. Maybe if some people would read the current threads instead of starting new ones all the time they would have skipped 4.0. I never upgraded my 3G due to the complaints about 4.0. And I never expected it to run properly anyway. The 3G was released with 2.0, it's understandable that it will not run a version 2 upgrades ahead. The 3G never really ran 3.0 perfectly either.

No, I'm not pushing any buttons on it, I just get random track changes when walking around with the phone in my pocket and listening to iTunes. It never happened with any of my old phones and doesn't matter what headphones I use (I thought maybe electrical interference on the headphones was causing the issue).

Certainly if I lock the screen the problem never occurs. I have just never had to do this with any other iPhone I have owned to avoid this issue.

I have also made a phone call with the iPhone 4 after updating to 4.1 and still have it keep the screen lit for a little bit longer than usual while holding the phone up to my ear.

In any event I doubt that proximity sensor problems are 100% resolved. I guess I will have to remember to lock the screen when making phone calls too in order to avoid hanging up on my boss or clients by accident.

You're comparing apples and oranges. If the proximity sensor still isn't working properly for phone calls, that is a bug and it should be fixed. If your iPhone is picking up touch events in your pocket because the touch screen is more sensitive (generally a good thing), the onus is on you to lock the screen as it's completely unrelated to the function of the proximity sensor.

You'll also get better battery life if you lock the screen, so I don't know why you wouldn't do it. It's not difficult.

+1! I'm so sick of people complaining about their 3 year old phone not running the newest iOS. Technoloy moves quickly and will not support older devices forever. Either upgrade to an iPhone 4, or stop complaining.

The iPhone 3G is a 2 year old phone... Just saying. And it's still supported by iOS 4, so it's not obsolete or anything. It just doesn't support all the features for obvious reasons, such as less RAM and no built-in compass.

HDR seems like something both the 3G and 3GS could support, but perhaps I am wrong. I was a little surprised, as I didn't think you needed more hardware than just the camera to accomplish HDR. Anyone know what the iPhone 4 has that prevents this on previous iPhones?

Gah, they're still there, it's just that the Game Center bumped the Voice Memo app to it's own screen, pushing all the apps back to yet another screen. Ugh, that scared me. It'd be nice if they didn't all get shoved around like that...

I had the same issue, but I knew nothing was deleted. Seems like Game Center bumped the Calendar from my front page to make a new page between the others. No big deal, maybe 20 seconds to rearrange the icons to meet my preferences.

"Never" option is still gone...

For those of you who say it is back, it's just part of your corporate policy. On our policy it is still gone.

has anyone tried to rejailbreak the device? Open cydia and up pops the apple logo, a progress bar, and then cydia starts flashing like crazy. after than, when you try to jailbreak again, the device wont stay turned off.

Someone seems to be fighting back. This should be fun.

Apple's HDR is useless.

Here is a standard shot:

Here's the original iphone shot of the above one for comparison:

the Pro HDR is what it is supposed to look like. You get both the foreground and background lighting without over/under exposing the other. And yes I know the Pro HDR one is a different photo but it keeps crashing on me right now for some reason so I'm using a two day old pic to show the difference.

Hummm.... my proximity sensor issues seem to be fixed. No more pocket hang ups so far and a couple tests off the ear showed a responsive lock and unlock.

Maybe those with issues should try a restart or restore? Seems to have worked for me and this was a HUGE issue for me.
