3GS update here went fine.
Seems snappier especially in Safari and Contacts.
Waiting to hear more on how it is on 3G for all my 3G friends.

Hmmm

No, I'm not pushing any buttons on it, I just get random track changes when walking around with the phone in my pocket and listening to iTunes. It never happened with any of my old phones and doesn't matter what headphones I use (I thought maybe electrical interference on the headphones was causing the issue).

Certainly if I lock the screen the problem never occurs. I have just never had to do this with any other iPhone I have owned to avoid this issue.

I have also made a phone call with the iPhone 4 after updating to 4.1 and still have it keep the screen lit for a little bit longer than usual while holding the phone up to my ear.

In any event I doubt that proximity sensor problems are 100% resolved. I guess I will have to remember to lock the screen when making phone calls too in order to avoid hanging up on my boss or clients by accident.

Maybe the "Shake to Shuffle" option is enabled?

Settings/iPod/shake to shuffle -> off

Will resetting make it delete everything I have on it? Please tell me directions on how to reset. Lol. :/

No just the settings. Go to Sys Prefs/General/Reset. Make sure you only select Reset All Settings NOT Erase All Content and Settings.

Proximity sensor problem... still there.

Starting to wonder if this is a hardware design flaw. It never occurred with the first three phones. Now it won't go away.

Since I have ears and mouth installed in the standard locations, holding the phone differently is not a practical solution.

I installed the Gold Master version last week and for a few days I had no prox issue but it has since returned. WTF Apple.

Finally, that was the longest download ever. Everything seems to work well enough though it's unfortunate that the Game Center has no games and only links to an informational page that has no games either.

Proximity Sensor Bug

The proximity sensor bug has definitely NOT been fixed.

It's slightly better - I can tell this by testing it myself, but I've just had a phone call this second where I put it on speaker-phone by accident and later brought up the contacts screen by accident.

This is a serious issue for me. I literally cannot speak on this phone without muting people or activating other stuff.

All this rubbish about the antenna - THIS is the serious problem.

I completely agree, it's better but not fixed.

Your head must have too many antenna or protruberances or something.

This was a problem for me under the previous version, it's MUCH better under this version at least for my less antenna-laden skull.

This sucks, I updated and took a shower, when I came back to the Imac my 3GS was in recovery mode.....had to restore DANG!

Noob question but I never skipped an update before. If iTunes wants to put 4.0.2 on my phone but I've skipped that and downloaded 4.1..... where do I put that file to have iTunes load it to my phone?

What do I do, now, since on my iMac here at work, i went from 4.0 to Jailbreak, to a restore, got hung up, I unplugged it, took it home after what I thought was "bricking" it.... and did a restore on my old MacBook Pro - after about 45 mins or so, it went ok, and has been fine since. 4.0.2 was fine, and now i'm updating on my iMac at work, (but normally sync at home on the MacBook Pro) and the Progress Bar on my phone is "stuck?" halfway, w/ the black screen - the apple and progress bar screen... HELP, what do i do?!

Hmm, shouldn't you be working, at work?

Option+Restore and select your 4.1 file

Try a hard phone reset. I had the problem from day one, but 4.1 fixed it. I can pull the phone a good 3/4" away from my face before the screen turns on.

Well I have owned the original iphone and the 3GS and never ONCE had this problem with either of those phones during the two and a half years I used them, so I don't think it's to do with me.

Not humongous improvement

I just did the update for my 3G. There is only little, if any, improvement. Settings app still laggy, Messages takes longer to open threads than before 4.0 and, worst of all, CoPilot will crash for the first few times I try to open it (which it never did with 3.0).

Hm, there may be some improvement within the application buttons and typing. Maps also doesn't take absolutely bloody forever to do anything. But it's still too early to say if those symptoms too will reappear after some while.

I too wonder if the proximity thing is actually hardware, as I have never had a single issue with that on my 3G, even with 4.0.
