That's a worry.

My sister has my old 3G unlocked by O2 when I got my iPhone 4. Don't want to yell her the update is out if it knackers the unlock. Anyone else confirm this?
Came back as soon as possible. No worries. I must have missed that dialog [already confirmed by someone else here]. Everything is fine, including tethering settings.

My 3G was unlocked by O2 about three months ago and upon the device restarting after the update I got the Congratulations, your iPhone is unlocked etc. screen.

Some of us don't have $200-$300+ to burn on a new phone each year. Mine is from February 2009. My phone should not have less than half of the performance that it had when I bought it along with a two year contract.

I am managing my own memory on this stupid thing like it's an old computer system from the '80s, where system memory was a very expensive and limited resource.

While the recession might be over, many of us working folks have not seen a cost of living raise in years, and some have even taken paycuts. I had expected this phone to last 2+ years. I am extremely disappointed. This phone cost me ~ $326 for a 16GB 3G phone with a two year contract.

Just because you have the luxury to buy a new phone each year doesn't mean everyone else does too.

i bought my wife a 3G that month with a warning that a new model comes out in June. everyone knows new iphones come out in June and buying one in February is asking for trouble

I resisted putting the iOS 4 update on my gf's iPod Touch 3rd Gen because it sucked the battery dry over the course of an hour or so. Can anyone confirm if this is the case with iOS 4.2?

Thanks!

What made 3GS users assume that HDR was coming to their device?

The demo at the keynote showed the iPhone 4 using the feature, and there was no mention of the 3GS or it's inferior camera.

I have to admit, listening to 3GS owners moan about not getting new features is utterly enjoyable after some of the crap and borderline ridicule they dished out to 3G users around the time multi-tasking and (especially) home screen wallpapers were confirmed as no-go for the 3G. At that time, I personally owned a 3G and the level of sheer enjoyment coming from 3GS users with their superiority complex was astounding.

They're tasting their own medicine now. Enjoy.

Apparently there are no games in the Game Centre.

Worst. Rollout. Ever.

(Haven't devs had since the 4.0 SDK in the Spring to make them compatible? Unless Apple hasn't approved any yet...)

I can't find any games in the game center...anyone with the same issue ?

I think games have to add support for Game Center, they don't just show up in it. They have to add code to link to the Game Center servers and what not for communication and scores.

You'll see updates soon for games like you did with the multitasking support when 4.0 was released.

There is a pretty easy way to have the highest level iPhone each year without paying (and you can probably even make a little money). I had the 16 GB iPhone 3G from its launch. Unfortunately I cracked its screen but when I upgraded to the 32 GB iPhone 3GS I was still able to sell the cracked 3G for ~$275. This year when I bought my 32 GB iPhone 4, I was able to sell my 3GS for ~$325. Both sold on eBay so very simple. You just gotta keep on top of it.

I believe they pulled Game Center out of later betas of 4.0, and only added it back in with the 4.1 betas, so the access has been there as long as one might think. I'm sure over the next couple days you'll start seeing updates in the App Store.

question

I have ios4.0 in my 2nd gen ipod touch, it was sooo slow..that I dint install it on my 3rd generation ipod touch.

Does anyones knows if ipod touch 3rd generation is slow with 4.0 and if so does the 4.1 improves the performance??

Ah shush.

Um, ya, it does select things while in my pockets and other friends with iPhone 4 have the same problem. I never had the issue with previous versions of the iPhone (of which I've had all but the original) so I just assumed it was related to the proximity sensor bug but it sounds like it is probably that the display is just more sensitive and even a tiny amount of moisture (like sweat) is enough to allow it to continue to function even when in a pocket.

In any event, yes, I know about the lock button at the top of the phone, so thanks for all of the smart ass and totally worthless replies.

There's nothing wrong with pointing out that you should lock the screen before putting your phone in your pocket. That seems like common sense. As far as I can tell the proximity sensor is only used to shut the screen off when you make a phone call, my iPhone 3GS definitely doesn't turn the screen off in any other situation.

Have you considered that maybe you are touching the screen when you put your phone in your pocket, or when you take it out? Maybe the shape of the iPhone 4 makes it easier for you to do that. it could be just that the screen is more sensitive as you say though.

Locking the screen would definitely solve all your problems. Accidental presses in the pocket are nothing more than user error in my opinion.

I have 4 on my 3rd gen. for the most its fine but I found that connecting it to my car kit makes it almost unusable. The scrollin through the tracks is down to a crawl. I am hoping 4.1 fixes this.

Ah shush.

No.

It's amusing, at least to me.

How the "mighty" have fallen ... "I can't believe there's no HDR on iPhone 3GS"!

Substitute "HDR" for "multi-tasking" or "home screen wallpaper" and add the same sarcastic, condescending replies of, "You're using old hardware" and it's the same scenario.

As a former 3G user who had to read the crap, it's amusing. And I'm pretty sure there's some 3G users out there who feel the same sense of "justice".

iOS 4.0 performs reasonably well on the 3rd gen iPod touch - I know this because that's what I'm using right now. Haven't been able to get the 4.1 update though.
