Could anyone tell me what iPhone1,1 and iPhone1,2 mean? And why does it have to be a comma?

It's just to differentiate between the 2G iPhone (1,1) and the 3G iPhone (1,2). Make sure you install the right build for your phone.

Commas show the model version, so iPhone1,1 is the very first iPhone that was released and then the refresh of iPhone1,2 which was the iPhone 3G

I have beta4 on my phone, I am also tired of the apps getting reset each time I restore even if I restore my previous backup. How do you do an upgrade to preserve the application locations?

Restore twice. Once is the initial restore where you put everything on (settings, apps music, etc) and once that is done right click on your iPhone in the sidebar and do restore from backup. It'll restore to the same backup you just did but will put your apps in place. I've done this but the restore takes about 5 mins. and I can usually arrange my apps faster than that. But I only have 3.5 pages of apps, if you have more than I can see it being useful.

MMS & Internet Tethering in Beta 5 - Confirmed Working (Rogers Wireless)

Could anyone tell me what iPhone1,1 and iPhone1,2 mean? And why does it have to be a comma?

1,1 == iPhone
1,2 == iPhone 3G.

To confirm: I still have MMS & Internet Tethering (both tested, not just "oh look, it's still there") working in beta 5. Although it's insanely slow to send/receive. Maybe that's just my carrier (Rogers Wireless).

Noticed two new things:
• Line (under Settings > General > About (just underneath "Network")
• Option to use "Turn on Bluetooth" (if BT is disabled) or "USB Only"

Not so new:
• The sound confirmation for Sent Messages is now back. I would never though I miss a "bloop!" that much until this. [this has been mentioned by other posters as well]

In case anyone asks:
• If you're wondering, I didn't update my iTunes 8.2 to beta 10 (beta 10 is bundled with OS 3.0 beta 5). Instead, I kept my iTunes 8.2 from OS 3.0 beta 4 (iTunes 8.2 beta 2 I think? Correct me if I am wrong)
• I did the "Update" (opt+click) instead of "Restore". This way, I didn't have to resync my Music/Settings/Apps.
• If you're either a Rogers Wireless or ATT customer and would like to update your iPhone's carrier settings, grab the correct .ipcc file over here: LINKAGE

what .ipcc file are you using thats enables you mms

I'm with Rogers Wireless. I can't give you the .ipcc file I used as you're not a Rogers Wireless customer (can't be, since you're in NYC, and I'm from Canada). It'd be useless. You need to find an .ipcc file that's made for your carrier (ATT or T-Mobile, I assume?)

MMS still working on Telenor Norway:)

Did a regular update (not restore) and didn't update itunes..

What sucks with 3.0 needing itunes 8.2 now is that i can't sync my iphone at home because i don't want to risk my music with a beta itunes..

I'm on AT&T in the USA.

I kept the first iTunes 8.2 beta and updated to iPhone OS beta 5 in iTunes. My MMS and tethering disappeared, but I resent the carrier file and options have reappeared upon a restart. Both features are working as before.

A find from bizzaregood and Cameron W

Awesome. I so missed it. Great news!!!

After syncing, with the other 4 betas, I noticed if you opened the iPod app shortly after a sync, it showed "loading" as it loaded the songs. With beta 5 it shows this:

Hmmm. Use of multiple lines in the future??

Very likely. Would be very useful for those who would like to consolidate two phone numbers into one single phone (ditch whatever that isn't an iPhone ;P).

MMS still works outside of USA

From what I can see, Apple have disabled MMS in beta 5 for users in USA only. This must in be in response to complaints from ATT.

I know a couple of people have confirmed their MMS still works - all outside of USA - are there any others?

Why would AT&T care?

I don't think Apple disabled MMS on purpose for AT&T customers because of AT&T complaints. I don't see why AT&T should complain - it's not that they're losing revenue because of the iPhone 3.0 Beta MMS users.

Simply, MMS is not supported in the Beta program, and someone who does the packaging included an IPCC file in Beta 5 which doesn't enable MMS. It's a Beta after all, and all this "AT&T complained" story sounds a little bit too much like a conspiracy to me.

Don't worry, MMS will come back soon enough. And you can keep it enabled anyway, if you upgrade to Beta 5 instead of restoring.

I agree. I've spoken with a few AT&T reps about tethering- when I first got it working with Beta 1 and a couple weeks ago when it stopped sending/receiving them. They were happy to get back up and running.

gimme gimme gimme!

Hardware releases. You find the same numbering system with all Apple products.

iPhone 1,1 is the original iPhone. iPhone 1,2 is the iPhone 3G.

I suppose they didn't call it iPhone 2,1 because the internal components didn't change drastically.

(EDIT: wayyyyy too slow!)
