Update hasn't take on my APP2. Have them connected via usb-c to lightning from my M1 Max MBP. Taking them out from time to time and listen to something with hopes of it kicking in the fw update. Also hoping paying double for the colorware version doesn't bite me in the ass...
Connecting to iPhone, putting AirPods back in case/in pocket, and then waiting 10-15 minutes with iPhone’s Bluetooth left fully enabled (blue in Control Center) triggered it for me. Not even sure I had to listen to anything first, which is my usual procedure.

I've reported a specific issue to Apple that the ANC allows high frequency sounds into the ears. The gym I go to plays the radio at about 60db (measured by the db app on my Apple Watch) through low quality speakers, and I can hear everything above the music that I'm playing from my Apple Watch or my iPhone . I've had to resort to using ear defenders which takes those sounds away. I've noticed this elsewhere too in other situations.

I do understand the need to allow people to be alerted to fire alarms, etc, but it would be so easy for the adjustment to be made, to make the experience some much better. These alarms would certainly still be heard anyway, I'm sure.

I very much hope that Apple has done something about this, because otherwise the AirPods Pro 2 are excellent. The sound quality is a big leap above that of the original AirPods Pro, I like the volume control on the stems, and, mostly, the ANC is excellent, except for the higher frequencies.
I've noticed the same thing regarding high frequencies. Hopefully this new firmware fixes it, but if not, where should I report an issue like this to Apple? Thanks!

Running Ventura? Mine updated right away on M1...

It is odd that on Android beats get a dedicated app where you can just tap button to install a firmware update... I guess the silent treatment is considered a premium experience by Apple, which, sure, 99% of consumers will never understand what firmware is, but for us hardcore semi prosumers, a simple update button like for system updates would make life easier!

Abstract:
Microphone arrays (MAs) are described that position and vent microphones so that performance of a noise suppression system coupled to the microphone array is enhanced.

Patent 8,321,213 and 8,326,611
Acoustic Voice Activity Detection (avad) for Electronic Systems

BACKGROUND

The ability to correctly identify voiced and unvoiced speech is critical to many speech applications including speech recognition, speaker verification, noise suppression, and many others. In a typical acoustic application, speech from a human speaker is captured and transmitted to a receiver in a different location. In the speaker's environment there may exist one or more noise sources that pollute the speech signal, the signal of interest, with unwanted acoustic noise. This makes it difficult or impossible for the receiver, whether human or machine, to understand the user's speech.

Patent 10,779,080
Dual Omnidirectional Microphone Array (doma)

Abstract:
A dual omnidirectional microphone array noise suppression is described. Compared to conventional arrays and algorithms, which seek to reduce noise by nulling out noise sources, the array of an embodiment is used to form two distinct virtual directional microphones which are configured to have very similar noise responses and very dissimilar speech responses

Patent 11,122,357
Forming Virtual Microphone Arrays Using Dual Omnidirectional Microphone Array (doma)

Abstract:
A dual omnidirectional microphone array noise suppression is described

Patent 8,467,543
Microphone and voice activity detection (VAD) configurations for use with communication systems

Claims:
. A communications system, comprising:

a voice detection subsystem configured to receive voice activity signals that includes information associated with human voicing activity, the voice detection subsystem configured to automatically generate control signals using the voice activity signals; and

a denoising subsystem coupled to the voice detection subsystem, the denoising subsystem comprising a microphone array including a plurality of microphones

Mine just updated the moment I plugged the case into the charger. I confirmed by doing a screenshot of the firmware version prior to plugging in (5A377) and looking after about 15 minutes (5B58).

One thing that has DEFINITELY been fixed: prior to the update, I could barely change the volume using the touch gesture — on either ear’s AirPod Pro 2. Now it works more or less as expected: 85% of my swipes work, where before it was more like 15% of my swipes changed the volume. I was literally 30 minutes from calling AppleCare about the swipe issue when I read about the update. Now — no need to call Apple.

I have not detected any difference in ANC, it seems quite good, as it was before the update.

However, I AM detecting a major difference in the transparency mode: before the update, transparency mode was kind of hissy and way too “bright” — very artificial sounding. Now, after the update, there is nothing artificial about transparency, and in fact it sounds a lot better than turning noise control off.

Any and everything that's around. I've been told that it sounds like I'm face deep in my keyboard when I'm just sitting normally and typing on my laptop, and that it sounds like i'm walking down the middle of the highway when i'm just standing on the corner to cross the street. When I'm handheld and the other person is using their APP1's, it sounds like they crumpling up a bag chips directly into the headphones when in actuality the bag is nowhere near their head.

With my personal experience APP1's and 2's have both been terrible phone call headsets, but amazing headphones. 🤷‍♂️
I did experience that with the APP1 that, as far as I know, did not apply noise reduction to the microphones. The APP2 does. Have you tried any experiments with Voice Memos to see what the sound is like? It could be a problem with your pair of APP2.

I find transparency exactly the same and the main issues like left AirPods ac turning off and on and audio drifting are all there and the sound isn’t improved at all, so no idea what they actually fixed

It's seems you have hardware issues. All issues are fixed for me.

It’s so annoying it can’t be a hardware problem if it’s not just me getting it, why didn’t they fix it in the firmware
Mine updated, and now I am getting drift towards the right side, as if the left one is either going quieter or a microseconds-long delay is being introduced, skewing the stereo balance to the right. Not once did this happen before the update.

Those are all patents for DSP processes particular to identifying voice signals and separating voices from background noise, every single one. None of them have anything to do with traditional phase cancellation. You can't bold "noise suppression" without reading the entire patent summary and classification. According to RPX the suits pertain to Google and Amazon voice assistant devices, not hifi devices with ANC.

I hope this fixes the issues I’ve had using these for calls. Every time I receive a call, put in my headphones wait for them to connect and then answer the phone, the call fails. It’s so frustrating. The audio also starts cutting out after a few minutes of watching a movie on my 2015 MacBook Pro. Glad I kept my original AirPods Pro around

Same issue for me, iPhone 14 pro max.
Also I am not able to update these AirPods.

I'll fill an issue today itself for a replacement to apple

If im not totally wrong here it feels like my ANC actually has improved with the new fw-update. Mon-fri I take the bus to work, some outer sounds have been coming through but they all are gone now.
on the subway i hear nothing but the music … on transparency mode it’s so clear but still able to listen to music and enjoy it

On another note. Can someone please help. I have song that I recently added that is called “First aid kit - Palomino. In the first couple of seconds there is like an electric guitar playing and in my headphones it creates sort of a scratchy sound. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be like that because it sounds a bit wrong. Can someone please listen to the song and get back to me?

Wow. So the comment wasn't helpful, and in fact was misleading. I'm trying to understand the nature/function of these threads. It appears useful information and honest discussion isn't it. What is it then?

I returned my Pro 2 because of all the problems. I'd be willing to buy them again if the problems were fixed. But how do I determine if anything was fixed when there is so many unsubstantiated comments?

Thanks.
ok bro
