I truly do not understand how people are having issues with Big Sur. I have been using the beta since the first one and I have not ran into any issues. Yes the earlier betas were slow and somewhat buggy but have not ran into all the known issues that people post. I love Big Sur for a beta it runs great. Its faster then Catalina on my iMac! But I have not ran into any big issues at all. Everything I use works without problems. Sometimes I wonder if people just complain to complain about things. It was the same with iOS14 beta all these issues people would complain about and I didn't have any of those issues. But it is 2020 it has surprises around every corner.

I haven't had any major issues with Big Sur either, apart from some irritating little bugs that have since been fixed. A lot of the bugs people are experiencing are most likely related to 3rd party applications and developers will need to push out updates to them once the OS is released to the public. There are a ton of configurations and everyones systems are different. For me, I'm a designer, so I use Adobe applications all day long. I don't currently have any issues with those apps that I have run into, but again, some people my have different settings and whatnot that could cause a glitch.

It's almost as if people have different hardware & software setups than you which may result in incompatibility, stability issues, memory leaks, localization bugs, driver issues etc etc etc etc etc, who would have thought different configurations results in different experiences 🤷‍♂️

A fine having to his age with FYI have issues? I’m using terminal command is hopefully it goes well, I’m stuck in loop of downloading installing and then nothing happen for a reboot and when I do reboot back to downloading and installing type ****

So I kicked off terminal downloading and auto install let’s see how this goes

Please let me know if anyone had hidste issues stuck in a loop doing download install and than says install later and nothing happens even if I manual reboot? It’s like setup file doesn’t kick off

I’m at 78 percent download now vis terminal

I had the issue as you can see above. BridgeOS issue apparently. Tried turning off Apple Watch unlock and unplugged all cables–lets see what happens. If it doesn't work I'll turn off Secure Boot and check.

Could it have anything to do with Secure Boot and the settings? I don't think so, but not sure what else...

Hard to say, the only thing you could try is resetting PRAM/NVRAM and/or resetting SMC.

Might help.

You mean turning off Sid protection for like files?

When are they going to enable the AirPods Switching ? Still doesn't work for me on Big Sur !

These arguments also apply to the mess (there are other words) that is Catalina.

IDK, they have some point. Apple controls the hardware and software - you'd expect them to work together perfectly.

I don't think "beta" excuses it. Mac OS X is over 20 years old - it should be rock steady by now. They shouldn't be having these regressions that take 10+ betas released over the course of 4 months to work out. There's major questions about what on earth Apple's software development practices look like that they produce so many bugs for so few improvements.

Did it work for you then? I have T2 and thought it was that, but guess not?

8 betas (9 now) and they didn’t fix the fan issue with the MacBook Pro 16-inch when connected to an external monitor. At this point I’m ready to give up and sale this piece of c.... machine.
Absolutely ridiculous. What the heck are Apple doing???? The 16" MBP experience is terrible. 🤬🤬🤬

Sorry to hear that. :(

My 16" MBP has an LG 4K Superfine and an LG 27UL600-W (another 4K monitor) attached to it (this has been my primary work configuration since February) and I'm not experiencing fan issues. I keep the lid on the MBP closed (ie. I just use the two external monitors along with an external kb/mouse).

Indeed, my 16" MBP pro experience has been fantastic. 👍

Granted, I didn't put Big Sur on this machine until beta 7 (I used my iMac as my 'test' machine for Big Sur betas until I felt it was stable enough for me to put on my MBP), but before or after the Big Sur update on my MBP, I haven't had any issues with the fan.

I use my 16" MBP with an LG external monitor and don't have any "fan" issues with beta 8. Machine is pulling about 13W of power connected to the monitor and is totally silent.

Same. I haven't measured the wattage pull, but with two attached 4K monitors, this thing is running smooth as silk.

I downloaded a full installer and it was beta 6 or 7

It was 6, not 7.

Here are all the full installers available to developers via software update now:

Older systems are also available via the mac app store and developer portal.

As you can see the only full installer currently available for big sur has build 20A5364e which is beta 6.

To get beta 9 to download and install instead of beta 6 full installer, click on "More info" instead of "Upgrade Now"

Could someone take a screenshot of the desktop with the Window menubar section selected? Want to see if it's still misaligned when a checkbox is in the menu.

Your gonna sell your machine because beta software isn’t ready for production machines? Just think how stupid what you said is.

Since:
1. Nobody will agree to a binding definition of the level of completeness and issue-free operation that differentiates an alpha from a beta from a production release
2. Even "production" releases of MacOS still have bugs and
3. People will try to excuse issues even in production releases,
why don't we dispense with the whole alpha, beta naming altogether and just consider every release to be official production?

Each vendor decides that for themselves. In this case, that's Apple. For now, Big Sur is still considered beta by the company that is developing and supporting it. This has certain connotations and should set certain expectations within the user base.

2. Even "production" releases of MacOS still have bugs and

Of course. All software has bugs.

3. People will try to excuse issues even in production releases,

I'm not seeing the relevance of this point, but yes, it's true. No matter the product (software, hardware, cars, politicians, etc) some people will forgive all manner of things.

why don't we dispense with the whole alpha, beta naming altogether and just consider every release to be official production?

That would be silly. When a product is in a beta phase, regardless of what quality expectations that has for you or me or anyone else, it means the company isn't willing to support it in an official capacity yet. It means that anyone that chooses to run that software does so in an extremely 'caveat emptor' mode. The company is telling us, under no uncertain terms "this software is NOT ready for prime time production".

After official release, they will then offer official support, publicly address bugs, and so forth. Not before. Treating every release of software as official production isn't fair to the company, isn't fair to us, and definitely isn't fair to the less technically apt that take on that mindset.
