Apple Releases OS X 10.7.1

...but in order to get Lion - until today when they released the flash drive - was to download it from the App Store.

Unless you bought a new Macbook Air or Mac Mini with Lion pre-installed. I don't think you need a Mac App Store account to set up a new Mac.

funny

funny they release 10.7.1, when 10.7.2 was just released to devs. It would seem that there are some CRITICAL fixes in this .1 release that it makes sense to get it out, even though probably in a few weeks we'll have a .2 release

Based on news reporting of Lion OSX, it seems like Apple has dropped the ball on this update? Is this the Windows equivalent of Vista on Mac? dun dun dun!

I think this answers your question.

But once downloaded, it could legally be re-downloaded and installed on as many systems as you want, for no additional charge. If that's the case it's much easier to update multiple systems from Software Update than have to go back to the App Store for every one.

To all pundits who mocked when I said there would be NO developer seed for 10.7.1:

WHO IS YOUR DADDY NOW? HOW DOES YOUR CROW TASTE?

I EXPECT AN APOLOGY FROM EVERY ONE OF YOU, THANKS!

Makes no sense! I WAS TOLD THIS OSX WAS PERFECT! Seems those morons were wrong. Welcome to OSX.

Hmmmm....maybe it's finally time to upgrade my MBP to Lion.........or maybe I'll wait until 10.7.2.

Believe me, with 30+ years of Apple experience: wait for 10.7.3 or 4. NOT BEFORE. .1 and .2 are always crap. .3s are tolerable, but .4 is when it usually starts to come together properly.

I'll update in a year, when this nonsense is ironed out properly. Let the fanboys bite the bitter bullet and figure out the problems first hand, then come in and clean up on their heels. OSX is too nutty out of the gate.

You have go to be kidding?

Still creaky browser that freezes as it sees fit, Mail that works most of the time, Address Book that needs to be corrected DAILY, FaceTime THAT WE PAID FOR STILL HAS NO SUCCESSFUL AUDIO INPUT, programs that freeze, a 3rd of my programs (and their costs) wizzed away - WHY APPLE??? All the rubbish of this wonderful system that begs for it's users to go back to PC!!!

And forget customer service - PUHLESE, APPLE IS NOT THE CS GIANTS THEY ONCE WERE - I've begun thinking they are the Peggy Discover Card got their ideas from!!! I hope the new building that is being built actually returns Jobs and a lot of the others back to THE MOTHER SHIP!!!

Dell is looking good again! Bad :apple: VERY BAD :apple:

Two extremely unusual things happened today: Apple released a version of OS X without seeding it to developers first, and I was wrong about something :p

All OS X (10.2 and post) releases have been good. just things get fixed after the .0 releases.

Nothing is perfect. So you can feel free to wait forever for the perfect OS that will never come. And the rest of us will download the cutting edge and best OS on the planet and it's point releases. And enjoy things as they come.

I thought 10.7.0 was remarkably good. One of the best .0 releases yet. And 10.7.1 fixed the Major 10.7.0 issues I had. So I'm really happy. Be a stuck in the mud if you want to. But I'll live in the now and love the lovely OS Apple has allowed us to purchase and enjoy.

10.7.0 was not crap. It was very good. And it can only get better from there with .1 .2 .3 etc etc. So your notion that all .0 - .2 OS X releases are crap is so so wrong I would write a book on why that's wrong and still not be out of ideas on why what you said is wrong.

Brightness bug still exists on the 27" iMac. When external devices are connected = brightness locked to max. Shame that Apple doesn't seem interested in fixing this.

Damn right you should ... maybe minus a few caps here and there, but people were pretty scathing at even the very suggestion that it might come without seeding - I was with you man!

Display Rotation | Dock Bug

Display Rotation | Dock Bug

Can someone confirm this has been fixed?

Set display to 90 degree rotation. Position your dock on the left and set it to auto hide.

On 10.7 the only way to make it unhide is to move your mouse to the bottom of your desktop (still thinks it's on the bottom) rather than the left.

Hope this has been fixed..

Did I mention what a foul, flaming pile of turd Launchpad is? Seriously. If I were the project manager for the OS X team, I'd fire those who worked on Launchpad, no question. Did Apple even do any usability testing on Lion? If it's not fixed by 10.7.3, I swear I'll never use it.

You're new here, aren't you? .0 releases are ALWAYS crap, and .1-.3 are usually questionable. This is the way of Apple. If you're that discontent with certain issues, feel free to notify Apple through their feedback/support system.

Interesting to hear. I stopped listening to their stuff last year as I could no longer take the Apple ass-kissing to quite that extent. I tried tuning in when the new iMacs came out, but their spreading of misinformation regarding the technology was too much to handle. Leo has always seemed to form opinions on such things very quickly, the others being more cautious, so this time around this would make sense. Personally I don't think it's a matter of embracing the new stuff, but a matter of waiting a bit for things to be fixed/reverted ... or jumping ship. And as 10.7.2 will probably be mainly iCloud-related, it could be a long wait if that path is chosen.

I hear you. I don't exactly listen to it for deep insight (though they do have some pretty knowledgable guests on, Leo has been in the biz a long time and knows everybody, Andy is excellent, and Alex Lindsey is a media professional - I just wish they had Merlin Mann back:() but more for the entertainment value.

Partially I was shocked about Leo liking Lion due to his serious Google-love of late and frequently saying things like "Apple is the new Microsoft." Of course, he and the rest of the panel on This Week In Google spend much of the time each week debating if Google is still following their "Don't Be Evil" philosophy.

Who said Apple did not seed 10.7.1? Most likely 10.7.1 is just the 10.7.2 seed minus the iCloud features (and maybe minus a few other small things that were still not fully cooked).

I am almost 100% certain those fixes in the 10.7.1 release are also in the 10.7.2 seeds. 10.7.1 is simply a subset of what is in 10.7.2 (possibly most of the difference relates to iCloud).

10.7. What???

Rather small for a X.X.1 release. I am used to 100 MB+ updates.

Ya, me too.. Once you see Apple go over 50MB for their OSX major updates, you get used to it.

This surprises me though.

If I understand correctly, Apple has NOT pushed 10.7.1 to developers, but have seeded 10 7.2 to them, even though Apple hasn't released it yet?

You forget what iOS you are running

17.4mb on my 2011 MacBook Pro!? Has there ever been a OS X release this tiny?

As the new Mac OS 10.7 Lion is just a subset of iOS things will be smaller now. A 100+ MB update would be rather large for an iOS device. This means that a 10 - 20 MB updates will be the norm.

It was nice when we had a full fledged Mac OS X but now we have iOS X Lion.

Is a missing item a bug or just the dumbing down of the Mac OS to make it the new large iToy OS?

Yep. Wi-Fi still dead as a door nail.

Same here, got my hopes up after my wi-fi stayed connected for a whole ten minutes before it dropped, used to be lucky to get five minutes without it dropping. Really want this sorted as there is no point me having a portable computer at the moment!

Andy

I installed the upgrade on both my iMac i7 and the MBA. So far no problems at all, with the upgrade. Of course I didn't really have any before except for some minor WiFi issues. ;)

I booted up in the Recovery HD (Hold down Option at Start Up) and ran disk utility. Repaired permissions and first aid. Now it's working. For now...
