Guys, what's with all the negativity?

If you hate the new shuffle, and prefer something with buttons, then maybe this iPod wasn't actually designed with you in mind.

If only apple made a miniature iPod with buttons. Hey, they could even call it the iPod nano!!! :p

But seriously, i'm a runner and I love the design of the new shuffle - that stainless steel clip is especially gorgeous. I'll be buying one as soon as they're in stores!

My only problem is, should I get black or silver?

They always do such a controversial thing after profitable products.
This could be it I have been waiting for since... what!. flower power?:D

?

The big problems with the new shuffle are:

1) They over simplified the controls, which actually makes it harder to use for some users.

2) They moved some of the controls to the headphone wire, which is not such a great idea, especially you're tied to what headphones Apple provide unless you get an adapter that costs US$20 to US$30 depending the third-party company providing it.

3) The battery life is actually shorter than the 2G shuffle.

Apple should have taken the 2G iPod nano design, applied newer circuitry and reduced the height of the player by 33%. The resulting player would have the same functionality as the 2G nano but has storage capacities up to 8 GB and could easily sell for US$119 for the 8 GB version.

Wait, you're saying Apple should have made a completely different product, at a completely different price point in order to satisfy your needs ?

... No comment.

^^^ HAHAHAHAHA :p awesome engraving

:apple: charges the same price for the special click button ones. These are the old kind which sold for the same $29.00

My point: No OEM buds could possibly be worth $30.

Edit: How hard would it have been to add a rocker special clicker button to the side?
I did it in like 2 minutes :p lol

YES!!! YES YES YES!!! I'd definitely buy one if it had a volume rocker on one side and play/pause button on the other , COME ON APPLE!! Like I said I'll wait til they are around $50 or buy a used one

GET BLACK!

Wow thats tiny , from the looks of things, the controls will either be too small to actually work or too big, making it look like a satalite coming outta the persons ear

next most likely step, the music will be stored on the ear phones :p or in pill form (take one for instant music )

Is anyone else concerned about the price? The 1GB iPod Shuffle costs less than half of the 4GB Shuffle and that should be the price-point of all Shuffles.

As for the new control, it over-complicates navigating and adds the compatibility headache to purchasing headphones. Adapters will just add more to the total cost of a Shuffle and users will have even longer headphone cords to manage. New headphones that feature the three-prong plugs and built-in remotes will also cost slightly more due to these components.

I think it is quite funny that people are dissing the Apple earbuds so much. Isn't it a running gag about the ubiquity of the white earbuds that we on every train, plane and bus.

Wake up people, most people use the earbuds that come in the box! It is probably well over 80%. I see them everywhere.

Wake up, I'm not most people. The standard buds fall out with virtually any movement at all. One of the Macworld Eds (might have been Dan Frakes) had the same problem, as do some other posters in this thread.

Why don't you tell me to just get new ears?

If you don't like these, don't buy them! I think they are a great idea for what they are meant to be used for. If you want to change song, you don't have to reach into your pocket or whatever to change the song.

FLAC is better than Apple Lossless, and thus I think the iPod line should support it. Probably will never happen, but I can hope.

FLAC? What's FLAC? (I know, but does anyone really care??)

Current, popular codecs are just fine.

Folks, the Shuffle isn't their only iPod. It's just another version to round out the whole lineup.

The negativity wold be justified if Apple had nothing better to offer.

This:

If you want to change song, you don't have to reach into your pocket or whatever to change the song.

Surprisingly yes! My suggestion of the 2/3 height version of the 2G iPod nano would have been a hot seller, especially if Apple had offered it at a very reasonable price. Keeping the Click Wheel interface is still a good idea, since it's still by far the best interface I've seen for a portable music player.

I posted my initial negative reaction on release day, due to the fact that the new shuffle would be a very weak replacement for my current silver 1GB second gen shuffle. After my shuffle dock was stolen on holiday last month, I figured I would get a new shuffle as it is only around double the cost of a replacement dock.

I am, in short, the target market for this - and was actively looking to buy one.

As an owner of an original iPhone, I have come to gain a love of the in-line headphone clicker. But, as an owner of an original iPhone, I have also come to utterly despise proprietary (in this case recessed) headphone jacks.

Given that my original iPhone earphones became horribly buzzy and severely hurt my right ear, I needed replacements. On the original iPhone, I could purchase a little £3 adapter to allow me to plug my normal earphones in, or purchase an extended 'clicker' cable to plug my headphones into, or purchase a pair of iPhone-specific phones. All credible options, all extra expense, all should have been unnecessary. There was no good reason for the iPhone to have a recessed headphone jack.

Similarly, I see absolutely no reason why the new shuffle has had the controls removed. It is just completely unnecessary and removes the usefulness of the shuffle in many scenarios - such as the car stereo one I mentioned.

I'd have been all over a shuffle with physical controls that also had the remote capability - the remote clicker is a real value added feature and one that is really worth the extra investment - but absolutely not in favour of normal buttons.

My response to the new shuffle has been to go and buy a 2GB green 'last-gen' shuffle. Hope it lasts for years to come, because this new shuffle, for me, is a complete and utter joke. iLounge's review says it all.

Well the fact that you went ahead an bought an Apple MP3 anyway means they got your money anyway, no matter how bad you think the new Shuffle is. I'm sure they're not too upset at your reaction. ;)

Worst Ipod ever

Locked to Apple ear buds. YUCK. They are the worst piece of crap. If you have to buy an accessory to use your headphones, the size is not as small as what apple is marketing. Plus it shoots up the cost.

I guess it should not matter to 99% of ipod owners and apple will sell bazillion new shuffle

Listen everyone,

All of us here in this forum are geeks, some are laptop geeks, some are photography geeks, some are music geeks... 99% of us own iPod's right? I'd say nearly all of us hate the Apple headphones. But, as I said, we're geeks and we care about these things, no? If you walk down the street on a normal day and look at the people listening to music, 90% of the iPod owners keep their original headphones, we represent that 10% of people that care. Obviously, Apple has seen this and taken advantage of this since it looks appealing to the people who have used the original Apple headphones with every iPod they've owned. That's why Apple is doing this, that's why people will buy it.

Ams.

I keep my 2G shuffle clipped to my sleeve or to the outside of my pocket. I don't have to reach inside my pocket to change songs.

Exactly, that's what the clip is for! No one's reaching in their pockets anyway. Absolute turkey of a product, ugly design and worst of all – making the whole (minus volume) system operate from one button??? If you're going to do that why not just duplicate the same button on the shuffle itself.

I would love to know the comments on this board if this had just been released by some other company.

I expect the 4th generation to be released very very soon

To all the people who are complaining that they wont buy the new shuffle because you want to use your own headphones, just a reminder that old shuffle still works. And my local electrical store still has the old shuffle in all the old shuffle colours for sale.

If you don't like the latest and greatest technology, there's nobody forcing you to buy it.

You just do not get it, do you? Why be punished for upgrading? Why be forced to buy a dongle or 3rd party ear buds to enjoy the extra capacity? What do I do when my 2GB Shuffle quits working? What then? Comments like that amaze and shock me at the complete lack of understanding. The stock headphones are TERRIBLE and do not fit the nature of the Shuffle.

Apple says thank you for their business, by the way. They have a new item soon to be released called the iTurd. It stinks - but people will line up for the new product and anyone who complains about the smell will be chastised and ridiculed for daring to question Apple.

Why does Apple have to build low end products to be backward compatible with everyone? I'm not ridiculing you, I'm just asking a question. Please quit crying about these things. (BTW, now I'm ridiculing you.) You are acting like a child who didn't get what he wanted for Christmas and now must pout and moan to let everyone know.

If you want to buy a new Shuffle, get the damn 3rd party dongle to work with whatever earphones you're using. Apple spent a a lot of $ on R and D to come up with the technology that went into this. If you don't like it, don't buy, but don't come on here and cry and moan then come back and cry and moan more when someone doesn't agree with you. [/rant]
