I wonder what the ads for the new iPad might be like, with all those Retina Display apps? "The only computer you ever need"?

These are great ads, but I'd like to remind [some of] you guys of one thing.

While tons of people here are saying that these ads aren't targeting their competitors products (which is true), don't forget that Apple's previous "I'm a Mac" ad campaign was entirely based on direct comparisons with PCs. I'm not saying this is bad or wrong (I wish they'd bring those hilarious ads back!), I'm just suggesting that some people should reevaluate what they're saying.

Does the UK allow commercials like these with the quick and tiny "Sequences Shortened" at the end?

Found it myself. Apparently it was the British Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) that made Apple first insert "Sequences Shortened" in their earlier iPhone ads which had shown instant responses in apps.

It looks like this is covered under the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) rules 3.12:

"Advertisements must not mislead by exaggerating the capability or performance of a product or service."

Hmm. What about the advertised perfect voice recognition? Seems like you'd need another disclaimer for that... or show it goof up once :)

Totally agree. For me at least, Siri is fine for alarms and reminders, but not much else.
Yes.. it's still in beta, but I found (with an English accent) that the 'Evi' app understands much better, but lacks functionality. Here's hoping Siri improves this year

Don't siri and evi use the same nuance engine? Shouldn't voice recognition be identical?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A406 Safari/7534.48.3)

I'll have to agree with others. Siri works ok or reminders and timers, but not much else. Still seems too inconsistent to use on a regular basis.

Anybody who bought or buys a 4S because of Siri will be disappointed.

When I heard Beta, I was already wondering why they released it, not Apple like to release half finished stuff. (Okay, a few over the years:)

Actually, I think Android had something like that, so it was probably just thrown in to not look as if they were behind.

Tried Siri a few times and quickly gave up. Would have banged the phone against the wall if it wasn't so funny that it understands almost nothing I pronounce and I tried in many ways.

Also tried another language (German) and that is even worse.

It can do a few things, but it's definitely not worth bothering with right now.

BTW: I find the ads weak based on the fact that Siri doesn't work!

These make an emotional connection to the product, so no bashing of other products (or more importantly customers who possess those other products) needed to be made. Very nice.

Product or political advertisers resort to bashing the competition only when they know their competition is far superior. Buyers need to be aware of this when choosing a product or leader. The inferior product or person will always let you know who's the best by bashing, belittling, or finding fault with them. They're actually spending big-bucks to let you know what or who is better or best.

Hey Apple, enough of the useless Siri garbage. What else can the phone do?

Siri is revolutionary and is the primary feature that sells the iPhone. It's the first vocal communication system that performs reasonably well using ordinary language. Other systems force you to memorize specific commands in order for them to work, like with my other phones, Toyota, and Ford. If you don't remember and clearly use the precise words, they simply don't work. Siri does work, at least far better than anything else, and will continue to improve as it evolves.

I believe that Apple's acquisition of Siri is the best move they've ever made. It has the potential to keep them in the lead forever, or as long as they continue to improve it.

----------

I asked Siri how to play those two songs she had no clue I asked for variations of guitar chords tabs songs she was useless notice they don't show Siri finding the music for the boy either false advertisement for ole Siri apple

Please use proper punctuation so we can get a clue as to what you're saying.

----------

sucks you can't do a majority of those things in Canada, or anywhere outside the US

I don't believe they're running these commercials in Canada or outside the US.

----------

The white iPhone may be missing, but there's only white in these ads. Just sayin'.

Apple's 'white' products set them appart visually from the rest. If it's white, you know it's an Apple.

There are all sorts of disclaimers in small print during the advert itself. I believe the "sequences may be shortened" was there from the first ad. Was'nt too bothered by it to be honest.

Great commercials! Don't know why some of you clowns are so anal. Enjoy life a little. Siri is great, I use it all the time on my white iPhone. And yes, the Rock God thing does actually work :p

Try it

Most of the time, when I try to do what the Ad/Siri is purporting to do, I find that you can ask the question, but the answer may take more time to get to then it appears.

"How do I play London Calling"

"Would you like me to look up on the Web "How do I play London Calling?"

I mean, how should Siri know if I mean on Guitar, Bass, Drums, our Sousaphone?

My wife uses it to look up words, as long as one can pronounce them correctly.

Can't wait to see all the downvotes I'll get - but here goes. I tried Siri on friends and relatives phones. "Nice" - but nothing spectacular and I am certainly glad I didn't upgrade FOR Siri. The fact that it does integrate with the calendar/reminders is nice. I just find the reminders app itself cloying.

And here's where I'll get slammed I am sure. I JUST switched to a Samsung Skyrocket and based on my personal experience with Siri and now voice integration on my skyrocket - I find them pretty much the same. No better, no worse. And I'm likely to use it rarely anyway.

For some, I understand Siri is invaluable. I should restate that. For some, having voice recognition software on their phone is invaluable. Being able to write texts/emails/search via voice is great.

I suspect there are many that use it sometimes/frequently because it's something to show off - something new and shiny.

I also suspect that many used it one or twice and will likely never use it again unless someones says "hey - can I see Siri?"

The ad itself is nice - but it's a bit inaccurate in its depiction of real world usage. It's a feel good commercial (road trip).

The Rock God commercial I found to be silly. I'm not the target market though as I am sure this one was aimed for the under 21 set.

Yes, you will get slammed because you aren't praising the iPhone . . . but I'll jump in that boat with you.

I agree, and I find that most voice integration is just about on par with what we've (read Android) had for the past few years. I like how SIRI can make appointments though.

All of Apple's ads are feel good commercials that speed things up to give the user the impression that it's wicked fast. Apple was slammed for that back in 2008; and there is no doubt in my mind that they are speeding SIRI up or substituting her responses to fit this commercial.

While the other competitors (whose ads are clever but overall suck) may be bashing just the iPhone, which is a terrible way to market your product, at least they are telling the truth.

I personally believe people force themselves to use Siri because it is "new" and it helps justify some people for upgrading from a iP4 to 4s.

I have both an 4S and a Thunderbolt, and like both of you I hardly ever use voice commands on either. BUT I do find Androids voice commands to be FAR more integrated than SIRI is CURRENTLY. Siri has natural language advantage but it still gives a lot of prompts to get most things done.

Some people might find Siri useful, but it is hardly revolutionary

Agreed! And that's the way it is with most tech. Apple spun the iPhone just the way they wanted it, but individually, every feature the iPhone has wasn't/isn't new or even the best implemented.

E.g. OTA updates and syncing was breakthrough in 2002 with my Treo 600

Thats the difference. Siri is something you communicate with. Android voice is something you order to do.

Whoa!?

Yeah - but at the same time - most of the stuff I've played with or wanted to do on both the iPhone and my Skyrocket were just fine talking/saying what I wanted. Siri (and I know it's in beta) for MY tasks and needs didn't benefit from natural speech.

IE "Send email to ...." works the same on both systems
IE "Send text to" - same
"What's the weather in/What time is it in?" - same
"What movies are playing near me?" - same
"Where is the closest chinese restaurant" - same

and so on

Also, I'm surprised that Apple would use "God" in a commercial. Between that and the Santa ad, I get the sense that some religious people could be put off.

The people that would be put off by such things are already anti Apple because explicit lyrics and rated R movies are in the iTunes store, there's no block on porn through safari etc

Does anyone who has an iPhone 4S even use Siri any more?

It was so hit or miss for me that I hardly ever used it. But it wasn't until I kept accidentally hitting the button on the keyboard next to the space bar when typing that I finally just disabled Siri completely.

Good idea and when it works it is not too bad. But it is still in beta and that is pretty obvious a lot of times when you try to use it.

Exactly, I always find it funny when people talk to me about video calls(facetime), syncing without connecting a cord, phone to phone messaging(BB), the notification center(Android), Badges(BB), 30 FPS recording(Nokia N series), excellent cameras(Sony K series and Nokia N series), etc etc like it is something new.

I am a phone junkie so I know it is not, BUT I do applaud apple for making most of the things I had on my Nokia N82 or Sony K800 Available to the masses.

I just stopped explaining to people how not revolutionary apple features are. Apple essentially did what other companies failed to do in the early 2000's and that is market and make THE AVERAGE PERSON want your phone

Thats the difference. Siri is something you communicate with. Android voice is something you order to do.

Whoa!?

When I communicate with someone, a real person, I don't get prompts about everything I want

"I would like to buy a stick of gum"
"You would like to by a stick of gum, is that correct"
"Yes"

I would us it a lot more if I could just get ANY voice recog to do what I want without reassuring me. It is annoying.

Question for the UK readers from a curious US poster:

We've often heard how the advertisements over there are not allowed to do certain things.

Does the UK allow commercials like these with the quick and tiny "Sequences Shortened" at the end?

Thanks!

Yes, they are exactly the same...Speeded up and the caveat at the end of the ad in tiny text.
