They removed it from the store, not from devices. Had they pushed a "force removal" from devices, that would be an entirely different thing.

As for the screenshot earlier fo the Fortnite app showing the payment options, that didn't look real to me. Look at the size of the notch.

I worked with a guy years ago, like 2011 or so and the App Store was fairly new and in-app purchase rules and timeouts didn’t exist like they do now. They had their debit checking account visa on the App Store and only had $500 or so in their account. Out to dinner they give their daughter their phone so she can play some virtual doll type game and the 6 year old spends $400 while they are at dinner on accessorizing her character without them even knowing. Luckily Apple refunded them the money. Stuff like that is what led to better restrictions.

Yeah, it was so simple to do back then.

I really liked their approach though. They should implement CHOICES let me have the CHOICE to pick between „Apple pay wall“ or „others“ on the same screen. No disadvantage for anyone but we all know damn Apple is all about the 🤑🤑🤑 for themselves

but that’s like shopping in a Walmart and the. Deciding you actually only want to pay the manufacturer. The infrastructure and shopping experience you just want to act like it’s not their. And also Apple is providing these guys tools too

I think it was a calculated move, Epic knew Fortnite would get pulled and is taking the short term money loss for what could be a PR win long term
This. They tried their hand at a power play cause the EU and co. are watching. Wouldn‘t be surprised if there‘s more to come and they work together with other high profile app makers (Microsoft maybe with Office 365?) to create an app exodus so Apple looks even worse infront of regulators.

Sorry but I think we all know Apple are going to lose this war.
They will win the battle today, and tomorrow, and perhaps next week, but they will not win the war.

Too many other services are opening up, and esp with the games streaming banning they are doing with Microsoft, and Google etc.

They are desperately trying to keep their store closed and locked down, and sooner or later this is going to bite them and they will simply have to back down.

If kids growing up today, grow up in a world of streaming games as being the norm, and you play games like to stream music, and watch netflix for a fixed fee, and find out AAA streaming game services are blocked on Apple, they won't select Apple.

I mean Geez, Even Rene Richie, who I love have said Apple are going to have to change their ways.
The minute you can sideload apps piracy and malware is going to ruin everything great about iPhone. Those of us who care about security choose the walled garden.

You think Apple will drop the 30% cut and not just price devices higher to make up for it? You think it will hurt Apple? It will take one year for Samsung to follow along.

Think software developers aren't going to raise prices to combat lost sales due to piracy? You don't think DRM will get worse?

Do you not think Facebook/Instagram/Tiktok will go straight to another appstore and that they won't violate iPhone security writing APIs that break privacy protections in iOS 14? If Apple doesn't control the app they can't control abuse. Chrome from the chrome store we promise it doesn't monitor everything on the phone 24/7.

Don't get me started on MDM. MDM on iPhone is bareable because you know exactly what your company is doing to your device. MDM solutions will be the first to leave the appstore and do whatever they want. You think you will be able to download apps from third party appstores? Ha.

You want Amazon apps have to install the Amazon store on your phone. Want Google Apps install the google apps store. They all have thier own rules they all want your credit card in their super secure (we promise) PCI environments.

Yes this is what you all want.

Just hours after Epic Games introduced a new direct payment option for Fortnite that skirts Apple's in-app purchase rules, Apple has pulled the Fortnite app from the App Store.

fortniteappstore.jpg

Fortnite is no longer available for download on the iPhone or the iPad, and Apple provided a statement to MacRumors on Fortnite's removal:This morning, Epic Games began letting players purchase 1,000 V-Bucks in the Fortnite app for $7.99, with the purchases going directly to Epic Games rather than using Apple's in-app purchase system.

At the time, it was not known if Epic Games had some kind of special permission from Apple to introduce such a feature as it is a clear violation of Apple's App Store rules surrounding in-app purchases. Given that the app has now been pulled from the App Store, it appears that Epic Games willingly violated Apple's requirements by offering the direct payment plan.

Rule 3.1.1 of Apple's App Store guidelines states that apps that offer in-game currencies need to use the in-app purchase mechanism. Apps are prohibited from including buttons, links, or other calls to action that ask customers to use non-Apple approved payment methods. Epic Games made the direct payment option available in the in the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, and other countries, and said that because apps that offer real-life goods and services like Uber and StubHub are not required to use Apple's in-app purchase mechanism, Fortnite should be entitled to the same treatment. Epic Games has also called Apple and Google's 30 percent commission on in-app purchases "exorbitant."

In response to Apple's statement and the removal of Fortnite from the App Store, Epic Games announced a new Nineteen Eighty-Fortnite short premiering at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, which appears to be a riff on Apple's famous 1984 ad.

Epic Games' stand against Apple comes as Apple is facing a U.S. antitrust investigation over its App Store rules and policies and as Apple is recovering from another very public dispute over the "Hey" email app.

Good, well done apple.

If you want the game, pay the extra.
It cost money to have a store front to sell from.

Apple is in the right.

Let’s say you make this HUGE platform for people to stand on and sell their product/services.

This platform is about 300 stories high, and anyone can take an elevator to stand on it for the world to see them. It’s the best way to sell a product.

YOU built this platform. It has built-in payment services, and a ton of other cool technologies to make your users get the most of this 300 story platform and sell their products well.

Although the users have the freedom to sell their products off your platform, and on their own website...people are complaining about the cut you take when you let users sell on your 300 ft platform.

Yet Sony’s 100 ft platform does the same thing.
Microsoft Windows

Unless Apple turns on the KILL SWITCH to remotely remove the app from every phone (which as been built into every release of iOS since version 2.0)

Interesting. I am not aware of this functionality and did not come across anything explaining this in detail after a brief search. Do you know of any resources that I can read about this? Curious to learn how it is done and the policy about it.

Ok so let me ask you this:

Right now Apple is trying to maintain, unlike with other streaming apps, which stream Music and Video to your device via the app store app.
Apple are saying if this app streams a game stream as opposed to a music of film stream it won't allow it, as it cannot vet and review every single game that gets streamed (though they don't with music and video streaming)

Do you personally think Apple will stick to their guns on this or back down on this eventually and allow it?

I am saying they will back down. they may give some other technical reason to cover their backing down.
But they will.........

Are you saying they won't and they will not change this policy and allow streaming game systems, like from Microsoft, Google Stadia and others around now, with more to come over the next few years?

If Apple didn't review it, that means app developers can add arbitrary code to existing approved apps somehow?

What's the purpose of the app review process then? If they could add a new payment option without a new version update, could some rogue developer add malware?

Apple likely have checks in place for this reason, I expect there are several scans of the application and then any updates that occur. Could a package be located on another server and a simple call-for link be within the application using a logic bomb? Perhaps but doubtful. It wouldn't surprise me if each application/update is Sandboxed by an automatic bot which checks for all these tactics.

Downloading is a one-time transaction. After the app is downloaded on the user's device, Apple doesn't provide much if any service to the app's users (save for the instant notifications maybe, but that is minuscule).

It's EPIC's game servers that do the heavy lifting server-wise and provide the actual gaming connectivity. So why should Apple take a cut of that, if they don't provide the actual gaming online server/service?

Whose dollars built that customer base to market to? That wasn't "free"

If you ever run a business you know that stuff isnt free in life. You build it or buy it; only 2 ways about it. Getting your service/product in front of customer eyes is literally the hardest and costliest part. They want it for free; and that's reasonable?

Or Apple can bill every developer for every download to make it fair then; since its hosted by Apple. 90% or more of the App store would vanish since it's free apps or IAP though.
