Really makes me wonder if I should take a break on iPhone and give a modern Android a try.
Because if they just don't innovate and then hike the price then I feel obligated to vote with my wallet.

My iPhone X is getting long-in-the-tooth in terms of its camera & battery, but is fine everywhere else. A price increase would probably persuade me to hold off upgrading for another year.
I still have an iPhone 6 and I am still completely happy with it (has a new battery though). It is small, light and does what I need. The only thing that bothers me is, that most apps became so big, that it is very slow sometimes to switch between apps. Or they have occasional freezes for a few seconds. I would have liked to have a newer system on it, but Apple closed that door deliberatly with iOS 12.
I don't use my phone as a camera and for the few snapshots I am doing with it, it is sufficient. For the real stuff I have real cameras. Everything else is fine.

For many that fork out $1k for an iPhone, the price doesn't really matter. They just want the best iPhone, regardless of price. Why should Apple leave money on the table?

Lol@increased price. No charger, no headphones...whats next? No box at all? All of this while raising prices and using scapegoats such as environment and increasing costs.

Not shocked if true.

Also, the days of an iPhone under $400 bucks feels like 5 lifetimes ago. (But I think I way overpaid on my horrible ATT plan back in the day)

It's Throwback Thurs.! 😒

I mean, the prices have always looked nice in US dollar but it is just insane to see that price tag in something like Euro. Yes, tax is not included in the price blablabla but it still does not come close. I remember those days when Apple only replaced the $ sign with the € sign but now it is like 200 in Euro on top! they also seem to be penny pinching with ridiculous prices like "X Euro and 41 Cent". Even Apple must know their prices are insane, since they are usually promoting the "from" price, based on a monthly financed price now instead of showing the full price straight away. Who would have ever thought you will have to finance a phone?! I know the US loves financing stuff and paying later but that usually does not fly well here.

Thankfully I am not in the market of a new iPhone. I have not even taken advantage of the 12 Pro Max camera yet thanks to going from lockdown to lockdown. Finally will be able to use it for the first time on vacation in a year next week. Also, iOS has advanced so little. What do you need to upgrade for? Only to go back using the same apps on the same Home Screen that you probably haven't been bothered to change in years :D

edit: just realised this post is a lot about "me" lol oh well, it is a forum
The price difference is so big that's it's actually cheaper to take a plane ticket London-NY and purchase it in Delaware than buying it in EUR or GBP...

One of the reasons is to capture the cancelled Note 21 Ultra's market.

Yes and no. Also to simply sell more. There is only so big of a market at $2000 to sell to. The Flip at $999 makes it a "normal phone" price too.

From the rumors at least, pre-orders are overflowing, especially out of China and Korea. Already far more than the S21 even.

So Samsung manages to bring the price down on bleeding edge tech, yet Apple increases prices on old dated tech with a stale notched design. So basically, the status quo. Why would anyone expect different?

Can't figure that out still. Good on Samsung though, respect there that they lowered all of their flagship phone prices this year, even the foldables. And still advanced the tech of each.

Which is why I said "one of". Samsung bean counters have run the modelling and concluded that the volume increase due to the price drop has a greater effect than the decrease in profit per device. This does not necessarily hold for an iPhone.

If Apple WANTED to lower prices they 100000% could. We know most of the BOM costs to build the phone. They are making many times other company's profits while not the top phone manufacturer.

They want to squeeze every penny out of people. The main problem is not them but all of you; who keep buying the phones every year at higher prices. If the market will bear the increase, and sales remain steady or go up, they arent lowering prices anytme! Economics 101 stuff. (And no I did NOT upgrade my phone last year)

This is how we got to $1000 phones to begin with. And why a basic iPhone with a piddly 64gb storage still now costs $800 (or $829 unlocked).

I know this is Digitimes and likely not accurate. But I certainly won't be even considering buying another iPhone if there is any price increase; already on the fence with CSAM device scanning and other things going elsewhere frankly.

Being OS-agnostic and only owning the phone and no other products (ok a Homepod mini but $100 and can sell) is nice. I don't have to play ecosystem mental gymnastics like some which Apple is banking on people being locked in and not acting on their gripes.

I don't think this will happen, if it does then it's an incredibly greedy move as we know Apple makes a high mark up on iPhones. A 20% cost increase per chip is nothing, it can easily be absorbed by Apple and TMSC, but I don't think it's a true story.
It would also be a struggle for them to justify it to the market when the iPhone 13 is expected to just be an S version of the 12. Not a brand new phone design with lots of new tech.

Probably a similar reason to why you went from an iphone 11 to a 12 as per your signature.

Why should they lower prices and hence profit though?

Actually, they haven't squeezed every penny out of people. What they could do is hike the price up by $200, and drop it by $50 every 3 months. They haven't exhausted all price discrimination practices and there is still consumer surplus on the table.

exactly .. I see no point in upgrading .. better off buying iPhone 12 at a good price

Basically true, but even I (Apple user since the 80's) am fed up with Apple's product and pricing strategy for good. No matter how good the camera in the high end model might be. charging 1,600€ for it is insane. After all it is a phone with some extra gadgets. I am a pro user, but I can't justify to spend more than 1,000€ just for a phone every year, just to stay at the top of the game. In addition we are a family of four, so it is impossible to just hand the old model down to somebody else every time. The others want relatively current phones too, understandably.
Right now I am still on an iPhone 6, because when I was in the market for a new phone, they got rid of TouchID and I was hoping that they would reintroduce it ever since, holding back on buying a new phone. FaceID does not work for me because of several reasons. No TouchID, no new iPhone.
I am waiting for the introduction of the new models in September, but chances are high that I'll be jumping ship and switch to another manufacturer. The vendor lock in isn't as bad anymore as it used to be. Getting the workflows with my Macs right might take a few extra minutes to figure out, but I expect no biggies.

And, this is why I chose to replace my iPhone 12 Pro Battery (a lot of them are faulty, don't let the Apple Forum trolls convince you otherwise) for $70 and sit on the sidelines this year.

All electronics going forward in the next year are going to rise in price. The next device I expect will increase in SRP by $50 will be the PS5 (if you can get one at the retail price).

This is a good chance to give Apple a finger and buy iPhone 12 instead, which will be discounted once 13s come out. This will teach them. ✌️
