Only that's not what Bose did. In fact, I would bet that Bose employees have greater freedom as to what brand of headphones they use than NFL players do, at this point.

When the NFL enters into a product endorsement contract, for all intents and purposes, that product becomes the official product of the NFL. NFL employees are bound by contract to promote NFL products, not be filmed with competitor products on the job site. It's actually pretty simple.

I think Bose fired the first shot, with the NFL debacle. It's unfortunate because Bose makes some decent stuff. Certainly not the best, but definitely better than the beats crap.

Or Apple fired the fatal shot when they bought Beats.

----------

Good for you Apple. Bose banning NFL players with Beats endorsements from wearing their headphones in NFL related activities was a dick-move.

Either way you cut it though, both companies are being stupid about their headphones.

Bose didn't ban anyone. The NFL and players union make the rules.

I feel like the NFL, or Bose, or both are crossing a line with the Bose sponsorship. This is not illegal or anything. The NFL can do what they want.

But, I don't see any other sponsors banning what players use 90 minutes before the game and 90 minutes after the game. In fact, I don't see sponsors in ANY of the major sports with that kind of ban. At least, none that I know of, and I don't claim to be all-knowing. I could be wrong.

Like I said, the NFL has the right to enforce a ban on Beats. Apple has the right to no longer sell Bose in their retail stores. I don't see anything wrong with those choices.

But, I think Bose will be the most hurt in this. I'm sure Apple has sold many Bose docks over the years to a demographic that is willing to pay exorbitant prices. Just because NFL players can't wear Beats before or after the game won't hurt the Beats brand. NFL players will continue to appear in Beats commercials. So, is the ban worth it for Bose?

In some ways Bose is the new Samsung. They can't seem to get by on their own so they use these business practices to help their market position rather than relying on the quality and reputation of their brand.

"Uh-oh, it looks like their stuff is more popular, ok, so how can we steer people to our stuff without actually doing it based on the merit of our stuff?"

What business practices are they using?

I've owned every version of the Bose Soundlink for my iPhone/iPod and loved them. …

I can't comment on cost, but a friend got what I think is the SoundLink Bluetooth speaker III … whenever I heard it (camping, beach etc.) it was stunning. Fabulous.

And what Bose and the NFL is doing is ok with you?

I'd wager that this has everything to do with the NFL ruling/deal with Bose and the asinine new "rule" of not being allowed to wear your endorsement deal products off the field in front of cameras.

A $10k fine, seriously? I know it's within the NFL's rights but this is pure greed, just as greedy as asking half time show performers to cough up money to work... yeah Paul McCartney really needs the exposure.

The NFL is becoming as corrupt as FIFA and the Olympic committee.

/rant

It's not a new NFL rule.

You mean other than Nike, Verizon, Papa Johns, etc? Players can not show off logos of competitors during events. Heck, players are fined every week for wearing things like Under Armour helmet clips. It seems the real problem is people here have such a lack of knowledge of what actually has been happening in the NFL for more than 30 years.

Where have I EVER said that Beats were any good?

I have never owned a Beats product and unless they change to being about sound quality rather than just banging bass then I never will.

I prefer Sennheiser or Audio Technica.

when did i ever say you said it ?.....

Heh. See. I'm not all-knowing! :p

both brands are overpriced, but I would much rather buy Bose than Beats.

Frankly I find what Apple is doing here is anti-competitive. but hey, I don't buy accessories from Apple store anyway, so it doesn't bother me.

you don't understand what anti-competitive means. McDonald's doesn't sell Whoppers -- is that anti-compeition? nope, because you can walk over to the Burger King next door and get a Whopper.

pretty simple concept.

Interesting. The prevalence of Beats headphones on pro sports athletes has been big for their appeal. I think that the NFL situation may have sped up the process of Apple removing Bose products from Apple retail given Bose's over-aggressive protection of their NFL sponsorship by trying to undercut the marketing NFL players provide Beats simply by wearing them.

Apple decided they would then cut out a huge alleyway to buying a Bose product (Apple Stores and Apple Online Store) and Bose is folding like a tent settling lawsuits. I'm a fan of all 3 brands so I'll just sit back and watch it play out.

I will say bose headphones are a little better than their home theater stuff. They are way overpriced but at least they aren’t junk like the acoustimass system. Those are possibly the worst speakers ever made and Bose knows it. That’s why they wont let anybody carry them unless they can have Bose techs come in and set it up separate from all the other speakers. That’s why you never see Bose in the little audio rooms at best buy. They don't want their speakers compared to real speakers. They have all the speakers setup 3 feet from your head and then they pick out passages that make them sound good and hide the huge gap in frequency response between the "sub" and the tweeters. They are marketing geniuses though. You have to give that to them.

You nailed it!

NBA was once my favorite sport to watch, I grew up a LA Lakers fan going to the Inglewood Forum. Now the Staples Center, but I haven't went to any games since the last Lakers vs Boston finals. It was great to be there and I miss it! However when Stern put the brakes on the Chris Paul to the Lakers deal, that was it for me.

For me, sports are just no fun to watch anymore.......:(

I have a friend that used to work for CBS Sports and this person worked in the producer's booth and they told me stories that would make MOST people THINK differently. This person told me a LOT of what the REAl goings on behind the scenes of Pro Sports. What does this person do know? They got out and they don't watch Pro Sports anymore because they grew to know the inner workings and were disgusted and disillusioned by the marketing hype. I know this ruins it for most people that are into Pro Sports, but the fact remains. They are a business first, entertainment second and a sport third. It's that level of importance and that's the problem. They simply lost focus on the Sport itself.

I used to play Little League, touch football with friends in Elementary school and loved to play volleyball in college (not on the team, but I liked taking volleyball classes just for the fun of it), once you get in that "competition" where the stakes are higher, that's when people start manipulating the system and it ceases to become fun. The same thing happens in the pop music world. Some people like to play music for the enjoyment of it, regardless of the popularity of what they are doing, but if you get caught up in the commercial music world, it ceases to be fun since it's too driven by MONEY, FAME, and POPULARITY and that's what screws it up. That's why a lot of these people get into drugs/alcohol abuse is because that's the underbelly part that drives this crap.

As soon as someone starts to become famous in the entertainment industry (sports, film, TV, music) watch out. the drugs/alcohol follows and then there is the trouble they get into (unless they know how to not get caught).

it's too bad Pro Sports has literally no chance at getting back to the basics of just being a fun activity for the participants without making gobs of money.

These franchises are also pricing themselves out of the market to where local governments actually are going bankrupt because they have to spend too much money on arenas because they (NBA, etc.) wants the local Government to pay for a large portion of the arena. THAT'S messed up, NO Governement should have pay a dime for an arena that's used by a sports franchise, EVER. If they can't do it without public money, then they need to adjust the way they do business.

Go look at old footage of after game interviews, you rarely saw sponsor names listed behind them. Now you see a wall of the various logos of sponsors. They do the same thing at these awards for the entertainment industry. It's disgusting. Look at concerts, now you see tons of sponsorships at concerts and it's digusting.

No, but I'd be less likely to get accessories as an impulse purchase.

That's ok for Apple....

Their focus is on Apple products and the $$$$'s are coming from selling Apple products. I bet profits from Bose sales would be 'a piss in a ocean'' for them...

Bose make over priced diabolical sounding junk anyway.

Anyone with working ears owes themselves a favour to buy something that presents their music with clarity, punch and neutrality - not something that sounds like its being played in a box.

----------

You might want to try a proper audio brand instead of either....

You might want to get your eyes checked Bose has better sound and DESIGN beats is just great in Sound but those Headphones and Dock connectors did they poop them out.

----------

Now Beats next AppleCare becomes more like Obama Care.

----------

Comparing Beats to Bose is like comparing Honda and Ferrari

I am guessing Bose is the Ferrari since Bose is far superior than Beats.

This is only me spit balling but I see three reasons with higher priority than the NFL spat. I personally see that spat as ancillary to the other reasons I will list.
1. Bose/Beats patent lawsuit. Bose is notorious for suing over alleged patent violations. You probably don't want to sell products from a company that is suing you.
2. The watch needs display space. I think Apple will go all out to make it a success.
3. Since the acquisition, Apple wants to feature Beats more prominently. Consensus seems to be Apple acquired Beats for the streaming service but why wouldn't they increase the exposure for a high margin, highly profitable, and highly marketable consumer product that leads it's category?

Couple those 3 with the NFL issue and you have a perfect storm. Seems more plausible than Apple throwing a hissy fit over NFL Policy.

I wish more people on Macrumors were like you. You give a great reply without insults. Thank you. I have to say your points make perfect sense. I actually forgot about the Bose/Beats lawsuit. I wasn't familiar with Beats being notorious for suing. Now while it's "possible" I'm not sold on the point of the watch needing more selling space which is a reason to boot out Bose but the rest of what you said gets me to understand this whole thing better.

What brand of audio equipment would you guys recommend? I always see people posting about how everyone should refrain from buying Bose or Beats because of their price and quality, but then when I go to look up superior alternatives, I come up short.

I've currently got Bose SIE2's (Sport Earbuds), and they sound quite good, fit really securely, and are great for working out.

I'm always up for finding superior products, but every offering I've seen from Klipsch and the like seem to have bad reviews or look flimsy or not good for fitness at all.

A couple of years ago I had the same question and, after reading a lot of reviews and discussions, came up with a list. I can remember the following:

- Sony MDR-7506 (less than $100)
- Grado SR80i (less than $100)
- Audio Technica ATH-M50 ($170)

Apple decided they would then cut out a huge alleyway to buying a Bose product (Apple Stores and Apple Online Store) and Bose is folding like a tent settling lawsuits. I'm a fan of all 3 brands so I'll just sit back and watch it play out.

Folding like a tent? You mean they are getting royalty agreements to make even more money? Because that is just as likely. Their deal with the NFL will surely pay off. It already has for the most part as their brand is getting more airtime and conversation than ever before.
