You know what would be really fun... downloading it over 256K DSL... that's what my parents had until last year when I convinced them to upgrade to 1.5 Megabit.

I like how it's so simple now too...
Step 1. Install Snow Leopard
Step 2. Download Lion
Step 3. Instal-- WAIT A MINUTE, THERE ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE A STEP 3!!!

Check out my proposed process:

Step 1. Install Lion.
Step 2. Instal-- WAIT A MINUTE, THERE ARENT ANY OTHER STEPS! THANK YOU OPTICAL MEDIA!

Pardon my ignorance, but Software Update/Mac App Store do delta updates, right? So other than this one time to download the 4GB+ package, all subsequent updates (at least until 10.8 or 11) will not be full installs?

If that is the case, then I'm not sure why we're getting so worked-up about a rare inconvenience. It doesn't sound all that bad to me after enduring decades of daily Windows Updates, heh. :)

Will Lion improve the really crummy app in Snow Leopard, QuickTime X?

well, if they're not going to fix the universally reviled Quicktime X, i sure hope they will still allow download and install of Quicktime 7 Player, like they do with Snow Leopard.

Decent idea for vast majority, but terrible thing for minority does not = a good idea. If it were a huge improvement for the vast majority and did not make things harder for anyone, then I would agree. But the point is they are saying how there is NO need for physical media...except when it comes to installing on their own computers.

Does this "I want physical media for Lion!" debate remind anyone of the "they've removed the floppy drives!?!?" debate over the iMac? How'd that turn out?

Meh.

I'm going to miss the Mac operating system. There have been rough releases over the years, but all and all, it's been a good run. This final version of Snow Leopard turned out to be the best of them all. Apple sure went out with a bang on that one. I can see using it for the next year until applications no longer run on it. After that, I guess I'll figure out where to go from there.

Not sure what's in store for the future, but so far... things are looking dismal for the ol' Macintosh. But I guess if you are into iToys like the iPhone, or iPad... then I suppose there's a lot to be looking forward to, so have fun with that.

new mac upgrade

if i bought a macbook pro since June 6th, how will I be able to download OS X Lion for free. Do i need a promo code or something?

upgrade path from Leopard?

i'm still on Leopard 10.5.7. (i saw no compelling reason to upgrade to Snow Leopard)

so just to be clear, in order to install Lion, i need to:

1. Buy and install Snow Leopard

2. Launch App Store and buy/download/install Lion.

is that right?

Lion released in time for Penrith store

I received this email from apple today which makes me think Lion and the new hardware will be shipped this week in time for the grand opening of the new store. Why open the store a week before the new gear hits the market?

http://images.apple.com/dm/au/2011/07/retail/i/main.jpg

Come to the new Apple Store, Penrith and bring your curiosity. It's the best place to get your hands on the new iPad 2, learn all about Mac, get set up with an iPhone 4 - even get advice for your business. When you get to the store, find a Specialist in a blue shirt - your guide to everything from checking in for an appointment to checking out instantly. And if you're one of the first 1,500 customers, you'll get a free commemorative T-shirt.*

Isn't this tantamount to admitting that the Icloud and the Apple Application Store is a failure?

Why would Apple insist that customers download 10.7 from the network, but send physical copies to their own stores?

The mind boggles at the duplicity.

Like any other enterprise , Apple is distributing Lion through whatever imaging tool it is they use. Try to keep up..

Enjoy windows? Is there something specific in Lion you are complaining about or are you just a curmudgeon?

It's fun to sit on the back porch and do facebook updates on my iPod and listen to music, simple things like that, iOS is a poor excuse for an OS. Like you, I think Mac OS X has seen its best days and Apple chose to go in this direction. There are always alternatives though, no one forces me to buy Apple.

Yes.

So educational establishments and businesses are in the vast minority? You're way off the mark here in my opinion. I look after 100 or so Macs that will be getting Lion. I'm also in consultation with at least 8 of the other main educational establishments in a 50 mile radius with similar requirements. And that's only the ones I know of personally. You are looking at this from a consumer point of view only it seems. No offence.

Then you are well aware that Apple has already stated you can use whatever imaging tools you used before? I doubt you support that many Macs but are so utterly clueless about how to do your job...

I remember when Snow Leopard was launched. Everybody was saying things like "Leopard is the best operating system, there's no way I will upgrade to Snow Leopard"...

I don't understand, isn't Lion a full operating system, just like Snow Leopard? Can't you use applications, manage your files, etc, like Snow Leopard?

Come on, just stop complaining, if you don't like Lion, just don't buy it! You can choose Windows, Linux, etc...

Download.

Show Package Contents>Contents>SharedSupport>InstallESD.dmg

Restore this DMG to a USB drive. :)

Thanks. Is it also possible to simply copy the download to the other machines across my network, and then run it on those machines much the same way the first one downloads it and runs it (i.e., not put it on an external drive)?

Or even just run it across the network (not even copying it to the other machines)?
