So, is it possible to have an Apple Watch 3 Cellular without a Cell Phone, and use it for calls? They made it sounds like it only augments a cell phone even though it has it's own independent plan. I would consider ditching my iPhone plan, and just have the watch and some ear pods for when I am out and about.
Nope :( Gotta have a phone still. I was actually interested if that was the case so my son could use just the watch.

The functionality of the Watch just got some much more diverse, not just for calling, now that it isn't completely tied to the iPhone. I might get one now

The small print on the apple store page says the carrier SIM in the watch has to be the same as the one in your iPhone so the UK has to be EE (who are terrible here). I just signed a contract with 3 network for my sim only iPhone contract...

Guess that is no Apple Watch 4 for me. GUTTED.

By the time 3 ever get on the Apple Watch it will be time for the Apple Watch 5!!!! FIRST WORLD (or rip off Britain) problems strike.

You don't have to be a rocket surgeon to see that the series 2 is being deprecated for the series 3 although the series 1 is being kept as a low cost option. Here's the thing though. This means that a LOT of series 2's will be dumped onto BestBye like last year. The GPS version of the 3 is only a modest improvement over the 2 which makes the 2 a reasonable choice at a huge discount!

Exactly my thought. There should be more space available or at least less power consumption.
Not more battery in the non-LTE :(
So no AW3 for me- see what AW4 comes with
Now I have to chose between Garmin or Polar instead. Both good battery.

Difference is barometer and series 3 (gps only) has composite back not ceramic.
And yes, the dot looks awkward.

Disappointed that you can't use the a Series 3 as a standalone piece of tech. The fact that it still requires an iPhone makes the LTE a little less impressive. I don't see why it couldn't be untethered, but I'm not that techy. Is it because it uses an electronic sim instead of a real SIM card? Does the electronic sim just mimic an existing sim? Oh well, guess I'll keep waiting.

I would rather just call on my phone I don’t get making calls on a watch

It's for "emergency" use. Go on a run and don't have to bring your phone as a lifeline.

Call quality is magic? Apple really needs to buy a thesaurus.

I think Apple wants to "own" the word and have people connect it to Apple and is not looking for word diversity.

Unless they've totally revamped the mic in Series 3, I'm going to call B.S. on the clarity of the mic. It's odd that Jeff Williams went "rogue" (as he put it) just to mention the mic in the Series 3.

The mic on my Series 2 frequently sucks. Most people I talk to using the watch tell me I sound muffled and they can hear themselves echoing back to them. It's gotten to the point that I only answer calls on the watch if absolutely necessary.

I know, I was toying with the phone-less option, but then why would Apple make a device that would cannibalize their flagship product at a lower price point? That said, I bet it's technically possible, and we'll see the tech savvy and perhaps some carriers try it. Reminds me of the days when people would jailbreak their iPhones to run on a different network (back when things were AT&T only). Do people still even do that?

The new watch is by far the more exciting thing annouced at this keynote. IPhone X , meh... maybe next version at a more reasonable price. But the new watch... i'm sooooooo getting this !

Well, it could technically, but the OS is just not anywhere near there. All the setup and apps/management needs an iphone. Also, lots of apps require the iphone edition of the app to sync it's data.
But obviously the most compelling reason is that apple would never allow the watch to cannibalize iphone sales - so don't expect at true standalone model in the foreseable future.

Yet you are OK with WiFi radiation? It would be real interesting to see who started all of this cell phone radiation nonsense and what their motivation was. Modern day Luddites maybe.

You can always take the approach the Amish do and build a little hut for your phone communications needs and leave the phone there. At least the Amish have a rational reason to keep electronics out of the home and off their bodies.
WiFi signals are only strong enough to reach maybe 200 feet vs a signal that has to reach upwards of a mile; one is certainly a lot stronger than the other.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet, if it has been, I apologize for the extra post. According to the apple website, the series 3 cellular version comes with 16 gb while the non cellular comes with 8 gb. Series 1 is still only 8 gb. It's an interesting tidbit - imo.

They said it will use the same number is your phone but I would LOVE to see if it could go on a different number with the same carrier. I have a work and home phone and if I could port my work sim into the watch I effectively won't need a second phone.

This is the first apple watch i might be interested in. LTE makes it useful to me as a watch for sports, hiking and such. I often find myself not wanting to carry a large phone around. The only thing i would miss is the lack of a camera. Overall this looks like a great piece of technology, far more impressive to me than the iPhone X. GPS, Wifi, LTE, iPod, Heart rate, email, txt. It even shows the time ;-)

Okay.. This release seems really awkward to me.. I can't even replace my stainless steel series 2 with anything like it in my country. As LTE version seems to be limited to only a select few countries (which is stupid, as LTE is the only big new thing here..) and the stainless steel model and ceramic model is now LTE-only I'm stuck with only aluminium models in my country.

What kind of logic is that? They remove all stainless steel and ceramic phones in my country. Like, really? If you are going to limit the LTE version like this, don't make all your good looking ones into LTE-only so you have markets that won't get anything other than Sports and Nike Edition's.

Secondly, what happened to the Rose Gold model? Not only are we stuck without stainless steel and ceramic, but we also lost Rose Gold? Like seriously?
