the notch tells you which way is up (and the home button tells you which way is down )

if a notch-less iphone were symmetrical in X & Y, hopefully it works upside down

(though i suppose the side buttons or lenses on the back or plug port can help you orient.. just not as readily as the notch or home button)

Not very sure about image quality for under display camera. The yellowish OLED film layer will definitely reduce quality and low light images will be very poor. FaceID seems better than TouchID so that feels like a regression. Would rather see Apple slim down the FaceID sensor and cut down the notch (or put that under display since IR probably is less affected by OLED film compared to regular camera). Quite frankly I don’t mind some bezel.

I thought Apple made it clear that Face ID was the future and there was no way back.

I love Face ID, but I don’t think it’s safe at all to say it’s here to stay. Apple isn’t going to keep Face ID around for the heck of it. If they determine Touch ID, without Face ID, is the way to eliminate the notch, that’s what they’re going to do.
faceID is used for more than just user verification.. Animoji/Memoji use it too..

not sure if this new eye correction faceTime feature needs it but maybe that too (?)

point being, there’s a little more to consider than just unlocking the phone.

I didn’t like the notch until I got an iPhone XS but I now realise it doesn’t get in the way of the experience.

A genuine all screen device will be great, but I’m in no hurry for it.

iPhone XS is the best iPhone I’ve had. I think they’ve nailed the design in every respect.

Face ID and Touch ID can both exist together on future phones. I’m not sure why this community always thinks in black and white like it has to be one or the other.

I think it’s because most people know including both unlocking methods just adds extra cost. Not going to happen.

Hard to see apple giving up on Face ID....
it will be in addition to Face ID. Better security. Not that the phone absolutely will require one or the other, but each can be useful in different situations, which encourages you to have a better passcode.

I can't imagine Apple abandoning Face ID. It's a technological marvel, and with iOS 13 it's even better (running the current beta, and Face ID I truly faster). I could see both Face ID and Touch ID as an option...

FaceID is nice for in App authentication but not for unlocking the device because you still have to do an additional swipe....

So what? It’s a design decision so that when your phone is unlocked you can read your notifications before going to home screen.

Fingerprint reader is 2 steps back. 1 in security and 1 in UX.

Good........hopefully i could made it through another year with my 8 plus..........

I can see why they need the swipe on the home screen but staring at the phone and holding it at the right angle is still an additional step and annoying. So FaceID is a step forward and a step back at the same time which is no real progress. In addition to that we also get the nasty notch.....

You just hold it naturally and it happens, how difficult can that be. I asked my 70-year-old mom what she prefers and if she would go back to fingerprint and she said and I quote " HELL NO". So she is able to use it and you are not?

I'm sorry but you make very little sense if any.

Never understood how anyone ever saw the notch as a positive, or Face ID as superior to Touch ID for that matter.

And people wonder why iPhones cost so much? All the R&D costs to engineer a fix for a "problem" that doesn't exist! Does the notch or pinhole really bother people that much? I still use my 7 Plus with (god forbid) A BEZEL, and I never even notice it!

How about just reducing the price of the phones so people won't hold on to their phones for 4+ years because iPhones cost >$1000!

Give us top-tier cameras, OLED displays and cut the price!

A bezel doesn’t jut into the viewing area. The notch does. Comparing apples and oranges.

Well you would arrive to the same conclusion if you were able to use some common sense and information available to you to make that judgement.

Removing Face Id in 2021 sounds like a backwards move imo. Either offer both face id and fingerprint or just be done with the fingerprint. After IOS 13 face id is so fast its silly to go back to fingerprints. Plus a whole lot of stuff are conveninetly designed with face id in mind, like for example looking at your notifications through the lock screen without having to go to the home screen, or replying to third party apps through the lock screen without the need to press your fingerprint for authentication (face id does it automatically).

I hope so. Just need my 7+ to hold out another year then.
For me it's the opposite I think. My 7+ works normal but I cannot wait to upgrade to XS or the new ones that are coming. 7+ is great but really want to try FaceID and all the other features that comes with the X and newer phones. Because TouchID never worked consistently for me probably that's my problem but really I do not want to see Apple ditching FaceID after all these campaings about how secure and useful it is.

Face ID > Touch ID.
I have sweaty hands, nough said. Let's not go back in time please...

Yess please yess. That's also me.

That being said I hope XS or XI's are worth upgrading from 7+ this year.

Also I really think full screen under TouchID is a good idea at the first place but as all other improvements it's gonna get better after they start to do it. I tried one of Samsung's and other companies under screen TouchID's and it really didn't feel great. But it's Apple so we have to believe and probably they will do it better than other ones.

Great news. Good to see Apple will continue to maintain its 3-year-behind everyone else rule.

Dunno how many years the others are behind face id but it looks like that as well...

Or CPU/GPU tech. Or a bunch of other stuff. But troll gotta troll :p

I can’t see them getting rid of Face ID. It’s so convenient and, in my opinion, better than Touch ID

Maybe they will implement Face ID to Mac line-up instead which makes more sense actually when you are consistently facing the display / monitor. And there is no need for notch as there will be always some kind of bezels there.

2021 iPhones will be notchless and have FaceID and (most likely) TouchID, anything else would be a disappointment.

OK, but then, what's next? I cannot imagine much more about how to truly innovate & make the phone substantially better, apart from improving already existing parts (camera, CPU, display). What do you think?

Physics of the notch. If you look at its size width and height on the screen, on the smaller dimension device that is presently the SE, that notch will extend nearly to the end of the device edge leaving only little display on each side that would resemble horns. At that point it might as become a forehead on the smaller device.

True. Though I wonder, right now the middle of the notch is taken up by the speaker. I would think this does not have to be there - current Android "punch-hole" phones move the speaker up into the edge. If this works internally (no idea), they might do the same on an iPhone and thereby make the notch a lot narrower.
