The more I read these iPhone rumours, the more depressed I get. I have an iPhone 6s Plus and despite replacing the battery in early 2018 I've felt for a while that 2019 would be the year to update. I don't intend to get a new phone very often (that's why I'm still using the 6s Plus) however the rumoured updates this year, if true, seem very disappointing. Seems unlikely that I'd do it, but I'm starting to wonder if I should try and hold out for another year!?

My iPhone 6 is still going strong. I will only upgrade if Apple get rid of the notch or my iPhone suddenly dies:)

I love Face ID on the phone. On iPad it’s a different story. The viewing angle sometimes makes it really a bit annoying.

Can I please just have a small phone with no stupid notch, no stupid camera bulge, touch ID, and 5G? Feel free to make it a bit thicker to hide the camera bulge and fill the rest of the extra space with battery.

2021 iPhones will be notchless and have FaceID and (most likely) TouchID, anything else would be a disappointment.

OK, but then, what's next? I cannot imagine much more about how to truly innovate & make the phone substantially better, apart from improving already existing parts (camera, CPU, display). What do you think?

My humble opinion, the three main areas from there are:
1) New battery technology; the holy grail of next gen mobile tech.
2) True wireless charging
3) Overhauled software — iOS homescreen feels extremely dated in its UI. I want live tiles that update with relevant information. I don’t want to have to pop into and out of apps all the time just to check basic information.

I think the phone(s) without FaceID will be the budget segment.

I get I’m nitpicking here, but please stop referring to iPhones as ‘budget’, there’s nothing budget about an iPhone, not with Apple’s pricing. Even if this 5.4 inch iPhone in the future starts at say $500, that’s not a budget phone. I’d say something budget would be more around the price of less than $200, which would likely be an android device.

I get what you’re trying to say, but I think what you mean to actually input is entry-level device.

It doesn’t really make sense that they’re abandoning FaceID.

Re-watch the 2017 iPhone Keynote, Tim Cook said Face ID was the future for Apple. Obviously that’s clear now that they’ve expanded face ID into the iPad line, and there’s no doubt it will make its way to the Mac at some point. Face ID is still very much in its infancy and has time to mature, I would expect Face ID to be used primarily in the iPhone for at least the next three years until Apple believes they can find the next secure form a biometric security as the primary.

I don’t understand the fascination with edge to edge screens. A small border of a few mm has to look better than a notch. I just think it’s dumb more than anything else and awful in some views. Personally I don’t like Face ID at all. I use one from time to time and switch it off and use the PIN

iPhone XI Plus, aka “The Notch-Less Monster”

That one’s free, Mr. Schiller!

Damn it, it’s been used before.

Yes, I rather have a little bezel at the top and bottom than a notch or cut out. The note 8 and 9 look amazing yet they have to follow the insane tread of holes and notches as well when it looks worse (personally) I just will not buy one until they fix this major design flaw.

I have an older iPhone (8 Plus) but I like the notch on the latest devices. It’s stylish, distinctive, and not afraid to be there.

And people wonder why iPhones cost so much? All the R&D costs to engineer a fix for a "problem" that doesn't exist! Does the notch or pinhole really bother people that much? I still use my 7 Plus with (god forbid) A BEZEL, and I never even notice it!

How about just reducing the price of the phones so people won't hold on to their phones for 4+ years because iPhones cost >$1000!

Give us top-tier cameras, OLED displays and cut the price!

I have an iPhone 7 Plus, which I barely use anymore and an iPhone XS Max and when I go back to the Plus all I see is this huge bezel. I can’t believe we ever had. It makes it look like an ancient tube tv

Hard to see apple giving up on Face ID....

That's what I wonder about. Even if a durable, accurate, and reliable under-screen fingerprint ID is possible, The TrueDepth camera is usable for more than just Face ID, or even Animoji's. It might get a bit smaller, but there would still be a notch, other cut-out, or small top bezel needed; I doubt whether it could be put under the display any time soon.

Technology has progressed.
It’s time to ditch Face ID annoyance and notch.
Under Display Touch ID FTW.

Because like every other company, they want to show “hey we did this first” to the world, Rather than polishing it to an extent before announcing it. This is even more important for Chinese to satiate their nationalism lust.
What makes you think they aren't polishing it?
They announced it because it's in the final stages of development. Apple did the same with Airpower just recently. Or lets remember the iphone 7 plus which first shipped without a working portrait mode.

Why? Theyve only had it for almost two years. They had touch id for what? 7 years? They gave up on that also but kept it on the macbook pros.
FaceId was a step up to complete the full screen phone look. Next step up is actually having no notches and full screen phones. Everyone is going that way and it will happen soon.
So yea i can see them dropping it when the times right.

Apple isn’t ditching face ID, that’s not even close to being a reality. As for touch ID under the display, I’m skeptical of Apple even bringing that as a possibility, especially being that Craig Federighi already commented that they experimented with this during the time Face ID was in the R&D phase, which obviously Apple chose the successor to be Face ID once it became optimal. Face ID isn’t going anywhere, it has everything to offer, as it still only has two years of being offered on devices, and just now being integrated into the iPad.

Just like programming, a piece of “working” code and “beautifully written” code are different, and latter needs polishing.

What android manufacturers do are releasing a product with working features. What Apple (usually) do is introducing a feature that works great over other competitors. Apple polishes feature to better suits iOS and hardware need.

Hence my point.

You just hold it naturally and it happens, how difficult can that be. I asked my 70-year-old mom what she prefers and if she would go back to fingerprint and she said and I quote " HELL NO". So she is able to use it and you are not?

I'm sorry but you make very little sense if any.

You are getting personal...I did not say that I am not able to use it but I said that it is an "additional step and annoying". Very often my XR is laying flat on the office table and I have to pick it up to unlock it. With TouchID this was not necessary....
