They won't be able to help themselves but introduce this as a new category whose price starts at least 500 Euro above the current Macbook Pro 15".

Oh you're totally correct..
Sorry - I should have been more clear.

Tim *LOVES* SKUs, and to your point, leaving the old one for sale allows them to "force this" upmarket pricing wise and sneakily establish a "new", higher base price to move forward with.

Make no mistake everyone.
The majority of Apple's business now is simply squeezing more money from the existing users.

While it is unclear if the widely rumored 16-inch MacBook Pro will launch in 2019 or 2020, the latest report from DigiTimes claims that Apple will begin receiving volume shipments of the notebook in the fourth quarter of this year. Taiwan-based manufacturer Quanta Computer is said to be the key supplier.

The report reiterates that the 16-inch MacBook Pro will have an ultra-thin-bezel design, suggesting the overall size of the notebook might be similar to the existing 15-inch MacBook Pro despite having a larger display.

16-inch MacBook Pro concept by MacRumors

Apple receiving volume shipments of the 16-inch MacBook Pro in the fourth quarter does not necessarily mean the notebook will launch in the fourth quarter. Apple may simply be planning to stockpile the 16-inch MacBook Pro ahead of the U.S. government's proposed 15 percent import tariff on an additional round of Chinese goods, including notebooks, slated to take effect December 15.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo originally said the 16-inch MacBook Pro would launch in the fourth quarter of 2019 with an all-new design, including a scissor switch keyboard. As of late, however, Kuo has more vaguely stated that a "new MacBook model" with a scissor keyboard will launch in mid 2020. It's unclear if the "new MacBook model" that Kuo has referred to more recently is the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Multiple images corresponding to a 16-inch MacBook Pro have been found in macOS Catalina in recent weeks, including one that reveals that Touch ID will likely be separated from the Touch Bar on the notebook.

The leaked Touch Bar design lends credence to the Esc key also being a separate, physical key again, as can be seen when zooming in to the previously leaked 16-inch MacBook Pro icon.

MacRumors has confirmed the location of the Touch Bar image in macOS Catalina. The filename includes "Device16."

DigiTimes previously said the 16-inch MacBook Pro would launch by the end of October, and today is the final day of the month. The site does not have the best track record when it comes to the timing of new Apple products, but its connections within Apple's supply chain are occasionally accurate.

I miss the old 17 inch

You’re right. And even then, they can just push it back entirely to next year or scrap whatever they want Lol.

We’ll see.
My guess the macbook pro line has been running for a couple of months now making the new 16in and they have stock. Macbook Pro 16in is not really a Christmas I got to have! product that is for the Apple Watches, iPads, Apple Air Pods, Apple TV, Homepods and of course the iPhones. They could release it any day in the next month and a half. This would give a boost to next years quarter sales along with the Christmas sales of the other products.

Will do - Just coming out of a meeting with Tim where we got to see the iPad Pro 2019 in new 11.3" and 12.95" sizes. New accessories required for all units.

And because wireless isn't enough, Apple are now going wireless-less, adding proprietary charging and accessory cables for everything*.

Absolutist statements are not persuasive. The "period" on the end does not make it better.
So Apple being the most valuable company in the world with Cook being the mind behind its prodigious supply chain since Jobs was alive, along with Cook being the highest paid Apple executive before he was CEO (decided by Jobs), selling over 300M units of product annually, and Apple making roughly double the profit of any company in the world wasn't persuasive?

Again, his performance speaks for itself. You failing to understand or recognize the facts doesn't change the empirical evidence.

I know some forum members see the MagSafe concept as dead and those who what it back should "Get over it". I think Tim Cook removed it to make more money on repairs. Here's the Steve Jobs video where he introduces it and implies there are a lot of repairs:

I think this proves Steve Jobs was looking out for the customer first, where Tim Cook is looking out for share holders (I'm both). There's absolutely no technical reason to stop the creation of a USB-C-MagSafe or Lightening-MagSafe for all Apples products.

It would be interesting to hear from forum members who think the MagSafe USB-C or Lightening idea is not worthy and why.

I have a Macbook Pro 2015 - I am really tiring of Magsafe and the heavy power brick. Traveling with one USB-C brick and even cord with the ability to charge an iPad and Macbook is the way to go

On the one hand, I regularly trip over my power cord and would welcome Apple Magsafe.

On the other hand, I remember the MagSafe wasn't very powerful and kept falling out or becoming loose.

That does make sense, but...

Why are the setup instructions in the latest iOS?

IMO - they wanted to announce them alongside the new iPhones in September, and have it released with the new iPhones or slightly later (October?) but they weren't ready for one reason or another.

They are probably close to being ready now on the software side, but maybe having hardware issues, or just decided to hold off for later? It is getting a little late to introduce new products for sale in the holiday season! (Black Friday is just a few weeks away.) I think their window of opportunity to sell a new consumer product for this year has passed. Maybe not, but they are cutting it very close.

I just can't see Apple releasing all-new (to them) hardware that takes advantage of specific features (a new chip in the iPhone) without explaining to the world how to use it, and what it can do. So, they are either going to have a very subdued event with a bunch of media and YouTube personalities like next week, or there's an event in Spring where they get announced and released alongside other products.

All IMO.

No sane business manager builds and holds inventory. This definitionally reduces their inventory turnover rate and that directly, proportionately and negatively affects their income statement and their stock price.

1) If they’re shipping the 16” before December 15 to beat a tariff increase, there’s no point in just sitting on them until March. They’ll likely start selling in December. Not because of a trivial warehousing expense but because there’s nothing to be gained by holding off.

2) References to a 16” and the AirTag are unlikely to be added into an October 2019 OS build if those products were going to be launched in March 2020. Yes I understand March is a typical month for an event; see previous sentence.

3) If the Mac Pro and the 6K monitor were going to be delayed, I think Apple would have said something by now. They’re not going to wait until Friday 20 December and then yank the rug out from everyone.

4) I would expect the AirTags to be introduced in an event, but the Mac Pro, 6K monitor and 16” Mac Prodon’t need an event. They could do a press briefing like AirPods Pro. But a mid November event for AirTags wouldn’t surprise me. A new AppleTV box (with AirTag support for the remote) would dovetail nicely, also I can’t imagine AirPods Pro don’t already support AirTags as well, for both the Pods and the battery case. That would juice AirPods Pro demand for December—that AR product-locating functionality will be pretty cool.

5) Mac Pro and the 6K monitor launching in December without an event would be typical. The 16” could launch at the same time, as others have speculated. (Larger companies often have money budgeted but unspent toward the end of a quarter, even more so at the end of the calendar year; that might play a part in the launch schedule.)

Those are my thoughts, for what they’re worth (and they’re worth what you paid for them).

You can buy this right now.
Griffin BreakSafe Magnetic USB-C Power Cable

I'd rather they keep costs down and let folks buy options like this from third parties. Not everyone wants/needs this.

Wouldn't the power brick that's needed to provide enough juice for a 15" MBP be equally big/heavy even if it uses USB-C?

I get what you're saying about using "the same one for both" -but the actual brick needed still is big/heavy, right?

For God's sakes, do two things here...

First, don't pay $40 for it. Get it here

Second, read the reviews.

Like all of these that are currently on the market, the reviews are not generally good. That is why I haven't yet bought one of these.
