You people are ridiculous on so many levels. You have an issue with "oh no the face id thing failed! Ahhhh" then its confirmed that it didn't actually fail and you move onto the next thing you could conceivably be upset about "ohhh wow. So it didn't fail. BUT what if a bunch of random people are just staring at my locked phone??"

You people are just looking for reasons to be upset. Jesus Christ people. It's never ending. Dreaming up scenarios that most likely won't happen ala Touch ID "what if someone wants to rob you and cuts your finger off?!?!"

Just take a break and enjoy the current state of tech for a bit. We live in amazing times

Remember when Touch ID was first announced? "What if someone cuts off my fingers/hand?" or "What if I am knocked out and someone tries to unlock my phone with my hand?".

It really is never ending here.

And to everyone, this is the first generation of Face ID. Remember how slow Touch ID was when it was first introduced? I also didn't realize that the iPhone X was already out. Why does it matter if an unreleased phone and technology encounter an issue?

What about the BSOD during a Microsoft demo? These things can happen. This is technology. You can plan and prepare for the demo for MONTHS, but still something might happen. That is why they have backup devices.

He must be a card to work for. Full santa mode when meetings go wrong.

Steve Jobs was an ass though. I would much prefer watching Craig being in "santa mode" than watching when Steve Jobs was upset about people using wifi.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Steve and I still watch his old presentations.

this is the problem. whatever really caused it but this will alwas be "face id fails on first ever public attempt to unlock the phone". i think it was also bad how craig reacted to it. he obviously shocked and surprised but i also don't understand how they can't make sure everything is working before they start showing the phone
I think you didn't read the article closely. Other folks on stage interacted with that device BEFORE him. That's what caused the problem, not that they "didn't make sure it worked". In fact seems it worked exactly as it was supposed to., denying access after multiple failed attempts.

yeah totally sucks that they are forcing folks to use this Face ID thing.
No one is forcing you to buy it. If you don't want face id, save a few hundred bucks and get a different phone. You can still remain in the Apple device corral with any of the other models, or just buy an Android. This reminds me a bit of the reactions to the loss of the phone jack last year, when folks (including myself) felt betrayed into being forced to buy a phone without that feature - until some kindly phone jack haters reminded us that perhaps we should just not buy this phone. That was a "eureka" moment.

I waited months for that headline "Thief cuts thumb of man for iphone, and tries to sell with severed thumb" :LOL

I don't think that's how it works.

Yep, You need to trigger the movement sensor (picking it up) for the phone to start looking for your face to unlock.

Not surprised at the denial. It was clear Craig had to wipe the stage makeup off his face for it to work.

Fast forward to 0:50 to see his face after wiping off stage makeup.

well spotted! yes can see his face is redder. I guess when you only have one more shot left, you get pretty desperate and will try anything!

To those saying "Why didn't Craig just explain what happened". We don't know, there could very well be a company policy that states "Just go to a backup device" instead. Did we all want to see Craig try to investigate what happened, or spend 2-3 minutes talking about it instead of proceeding with the demo?

So what this means is if I am showing a funny text on my lockscreen to my friends... the phone is going to go into "require a passcode mode" after it gets passed around to 3 of my friends before it gets back to me?

If this were Touch ID, this wouldn't be an issue. I don't think each one of my friends would be "touching the home button" of my phone with each of their fingers. (sounds dirty)
Yep. My thoughts exactly. (I came on the forum comments to see if someone had also posted this, and sure enough it you didn't disappoint!)

I was going to say Apple could fix this by having the phone owner rest their finger on TouchID, and then remembered that it isn't there anymore. Apple probably thinks this is a small occurrence rate to not warrant further research.

Even if it had been a fail, I wouldn't have too worried. Murphy's law rules. What I find more concerning, is that the unlocking itself seemed slow during the presentation - not to mention that the Chief of Software is standing on stage emulating the sounds of an egg laying hen.

I would have been more impressed in retrospective, if during the software developer's conference a few weeks back, Craig had presented massive updates to let's say the Photos App to make up for the cancellation of Aperture.

But I guess the priority of Apple are laying now in the animation of "mystical creatures" like the Unicorn.

This is who Craig is. Making weed jokes regarding the name High Sierra. He also had some scenes like the one we saw several years ago from backstage.

It is true. During the keynote you can see on the phone screen it says "passcode is required to enable FaceID".

Just like when turning on iPhone with touchID. It requires passcode first then touchID.
Stop basing your blind fanboyism purely off of conjecture. The phone was NOT turned off then ON. They even said it themselves.

And everything in the world works perfectly every time and each and every one of us does and says the perfect thing at the perfect time bc Craig is subhuman and damn Apple shudda known.

Man shut up. God.

Thank god life still happens and things don't always meet our over-the-top expectations.

Make up your minds people. You b-itch and moan that Apple lacks innovation, then when they take a MAJOR step forward in an attempt at futuristic security or authentication it's seemingly obsessively looked at as flawed.

I'm a forward thinker and I'm really curious about how this technology will work. Being its first iteration me for one is not expecting perfection. Touch ID and Apple Pay for ME worked as advertised -- flawlessly handling hundreds of my transactions over the last year alone. Im ok that Touch ID was retired from the iPhone X. It would be lame to have had Face ID as a beta operating behind Touch ID. I think SAMESONG looks more idiotic than ever by just putting their cheap attempt at Face ID "let's beat Apple to the table" mentality with a system that's horribly and embarrassingly flawed with its lame ass fingerprint reader -- Whatever the circumstances of whether it was a tech problem or a engineering decision - eliminating Touch ID was the correct choice -- period. Redundancy is lame. Progress and innovation only can come from risks.
Courage, as Phil would have it ...

well spotted! yes can see his face is redder.

My face would be red too if I just suffered a hardware glitch on my flagship product in front of an audience of millions.

Ultimately we'll know exactly how well it works, since the phone will shortly be sold in shops. It's not like Apple can possibly gain from a conspiracy to fake faceID.

This is who Craig is. Making weed jokes regarding the name High Sierra. He also had some scenes like the one we saw several years ago from backstage.

That explains a lot then.

I guess i can expect full focus on more Animojis and don't have to wait for a replacement for Aperture anymore.

Upon seeing Face ID fail, I wondered why Craig didn't simply enter his passcode and then locked the screen to try it again. If Apple's explanation is correct, it should have worked that second time.

When you are on stage giving a demo, sometimes going to a backup is the best solution. What if it didn't work when he tried that? How would things look then? Would it really be entertaining to people to have them diagnose the issue on stage instead of going to a backup that took less than 5 seconds?

What a typically ignorant SA statement calling everyone idiots.

The simple fact is Apple stuffed up...It was 100% preventable, any idiot knows you keep all props sterile that is, only for the handling by the demonstrator, for a very good reason...Idiots!! You employ idiots you get the predictable result...

The design of the theatre seems to be problematic, and idiots roam wild, and idiots like to touch and play with things...The idiot in chief of this disaster was Tim Cook, he was the MC of the show, and demonstrated poor stage management, if there was indeed a professional stage manager on site..

I am sure that there was a rehearsal before, to run through any faults, but this seems not the case, the run through would have found the fault, but a very small credit here, there was a back up device, hopefully Apple learn from this...Sadly they will not...

I think you have to swipe up to activate FaceID to start 'looking' for your face?

I don't think so - as far as I could tell it unlocks when it sees your face, and you swipe up to get to the home screen. (Although now that I mention it, I'm not sure why you really need the swipe up as well?)

Very true. The real test will be the general consensus when it's in the wild

Anything else "oh it's definitely great" or "it's doomed" are equally unsubstantiated.

I still will miss Touch ID period. No flawless implementation can overcome that
Just get the 8, its a great phone. Talked to two non-techie friends last night and they were not willing to give up TouchID just for usability. They don't want to be looking at their phones. So, great the 8 great phone and keep touchID. Apple will bring touchID back under the screen when they get it figured out.
