So what happened to the lifting of the Embargo? Was there no test units sent out to so called journalists this time 'round or what?

Another year, another thread full of wise internet denizens proclaiming that Apple enjoys making people frustrated and angry just for kicks, because then somehow that makes others want the phone more...

We've known for weeks supply was going to be legitimately constrained, and this is also the biggest change since the launch of the 6. Of course demand was going to be high.

"Munster created a chart [ . . . ]"

I call B.S. on gene's chart. i got into the store between 12:02:30 and 12:03:30. i ordered an unlocked/T-Mobile space gray 256GB device. the headers of the confirmation email show a date of "Fri, 27 Oct 2017 07:04:51 +0000 (GMT)" and already the ship time was 2-3 weeks.

the experience of this "analyst" is no more valid than the experience of users in this forum. in fact, macrumors should in some way formalize the presentation of its users' collective experiences and start selling that as research notes from their brand-spankity new VC firm.

You'e talking U. S. orders?
There has to be some regional stuff going on.
After I ordered 2 ATT phones, just for the hell of it I went through the order process with the apple app for T-Mobile and sprint. Just to see what order times looked like. At :10 past, both carriers had nov 3 ship dates still for all 4 models. Weird stuff.

This is ROFL material. Its a headline that pre-orders are "off the charts" and based on sell outs..
huh? the headline isn’t based off of selling off all the available supply.
Apple simply said demand is off the charts.

don’t confuse the other charts in the OP with what Apple said.

Feels like the same kind of crap shoot trying to buy San Diego Comic Con passes :p:p

Which for those who had badges last year, returning registration is tomorrow morning ;) Luckily for me, I never need to worry about buying a badge!

Crap. 17 after is about when my order went through, and that's when it slipped from November 3rd. I blame the crappy Apple Store App that us iPhone Upgrade Program members were forced to use this year. The website came up for me fine but I couldn't get that damn app to load until I rebooted my device. Even so it gave me a bunch of errors and I didn't receive any confirmation email until nearly four hours after launch.

I'm super irritated because I woke up on time and everything. It was supposed to be a simple button press to confirm everything that I was already pre-approved for. When is Apple going to let us iPhone Upgrade Program members opt-in for yearly upgrades? I want an email the week before where I can just set what I want and then have it show up on launch day. I want it to be like a subscription service.
Were you constantly reloading and killing the apple store app or just closing and reopening it? I opened/killed for about 15-18 minutes, then once in I got an error maybe half a dozen times but kept trying until it went through, never exited the app once I got in. By that time, delivery was 11/17, but to the store was 11/3, so I was psyched.

Maybe they'll throw in a Free 8 with each X purchase, since they have so many laying around.

I kept trying together into the Apple Site to order, but was able to into Best Buy first. Everything was fine until I noticed that Best Buy jacked up the price up on the 256 model to $100 more! ($1249). Then, it wouldn't let us cancel, or order another phone on the Apple site (I guess my number was tied up on the ATT side). After about 30 minutes, we were able to cancel the order on the Best Buy site (rip off!), and couldn't get it to go through on the Apple site. We would get to the part when it verified the carrier, but when you clicked "continue," it would crash with an error. We couldn't pay for the phone. Tried both iPad and computer with the same results. 45 minutes in, I switch over to Firefox, and it was as smooth as glass... however we are at 5 to 6 weeks now. I am so angry at Best Buy for this GOUGING stunt! I will never buy anything from them again. SCALPERS!

Called locking you into a contract, if you do not actually have the money to buy iPhone. Thus they make the interest in capturing you as guaranteed income for two or more years. Let’s say the current vender or another has a new smoking deal, saves you $50 a month. You do not have the money to buy out the contract, so you either Loose the deal or they offer you another extension. Happens all the time. My example, you just lost some where near $1,200, might call that interest. If you actually have the money to buy out the iPhone, then your statement is valid. The trouble, a great percentage do not. Number one financial rule, no company offers anything free. You just do not know how they are taking advantage of you.

That’s not interest. That’s called sticking with a company. Some of us don’t want to go through the hassle of jumping from carrier to carrier and would stick with what we have because it provides the most consistent service.

Surely the only metric that counts for Apple is units delivered, i.e. bookable revenue?

For direct customer deliveries, yes, Apple doesn't count a sale until it's in the customer's hands.

But most (I think 80%) of the initial sales of available supplies are usually to retailers, and Apple counts a sale the moment it is shipped to a retailer.

So it works out great for Apple. Revenue is counted, stores have stock, and millions of customers have agreed to buy future supplies.

And now we know exactly why Apple is perceived to not care about Macs.

The X sells for Mac pricing with a MUCH quicker upgrade cycle than a Mac.

Can't wait to get mine on the 3rd :)

Not my point at all. The same costs can be incurred with the same company. Once locked into a contract, your position for the term of the contract are limited, unless you have the means to exit the contract. Not a loyalty issue at all.

Yes, the appearance of scarcity is a huge part of marketing theory. Companies like Samsung can make lots of different models, but Apple struggles to make enough of one single product (and it is not even a market-leading product in terms of volume)? The appearance of Scarcity has become an Apple NEED. Without it, their stock plummets and Cook loses some of his stock options.

Perhaps scarcity helps marketing, but conservative evaluation of demand is also prudent.

Imagine if Apple made more than It could sell. That happened before with the Mac Cube. Apple had to write off over $200 million in inventory.

I agree: shipping delays don't tell you the demand level. Apple knows the total number of pre-orders. The number of units pre-ordered tells you the demand.

No Sheet Sherlock.....website/Apple Store App was down here for the first 5 minutes and by the time I could get on, 256GB was already sold out for delivery on Nov 3 (est. 2-3 weeks) in both colours. I'll have to troll my way to the Apple Store

This is exactly what happened for me!

This is honestly such a big part of their marketing. Constraining supply to increase demand, not only in the short term but for the product as a whole.

Imagine if the iPhone was readily available to pick up? It removes the “exclusivity” of it very quickly.

Edit: They are of course having manufacturing issues, but even if they weren’t, you know they’d issue the same statement.
I and many of us preordering do not buy iPhones because they are exclusive. Rather than not being able to get on day one is very frustrating, but we get them because for us they are the best phones available for our needs and desires and willing to pay a premium since still a 'value' when considering how much we use them and how we use them.

If Apple could have had a larger supply I believe they would have, and they still would have sold out like they always do, just rather they wouldn't have sold out for several hours rather than minutes.

The level of cuckoo in this thread is pretty astounding! Right up there with all the tantrum throwing "adults" who didn't get launch day confirms.

Relax, folks; breathe. It's not the end of the world and Apple is not out to get you.

"off the charts" — I really don't care for these meaningless phrases.

If I can choose the statistics for the charts, it's easy to make it "off the charts."

Apple could simply have stated that they had more preorders than ever before if that was the case. In fact, if that were the case, I think that's what they would have announced because it would have been more impressive.
